We're in Ecorse, Michigan. Not exactly the first place you…read moreexpect to find a little slice of Puerto Rico. Steel town grit. Cold air off the river. And tucked between the ordinary... a spot called El Amanecer. No frills. No neon gimmicks. Just steam rising from trays and the smell of something real. You walk up and it feels like somebody's abuela is in the back, running the whole operation with quiet authority. First up -- empanadas. The shrimp? Riquísimo. Straight up. One bite and it's that Ratatouille moment -- the world fades out, and suddenly you're somewhere warmer. Brighter. It's the best part of Puerto Rico tucked between two pieces of golden dough. Crispy outside, tender inside, seasoned like somebody actually cared. That's a 10 out of 10. No debate. The beef empanada? Juicy. Properly juicy. Little chunks of potato hiding in there like buried treasure. The kind of detail that tells you this isn't mass-produced -- this is made by hand. Balanced, comforting, confident. 9 out of 10. The chicken? Man... they made that with love. Moist, flavorful, no shortcuts. It doesn't try too hard -- it just delivers. A strong 8.8. Respectable. Solid. Then the chuleta frita. Fried pork chop, cooked all the way through -- no nonsense. Seasoned right. Crispy edges, tender inside. It's not flashy, it's dependable. 8.3 out of 10. It shows up and does its job. But the arroz con gandules? Outstanding. Perfect moisture -- not dry, not mushy. The rice carries the flavor like it's supposed to. Deep, savory, vibrant. This is the kind of rice that makes you pause mid-conversation. 9.5 out of 10. Easy. Places like this -- they don't scream for attention. They don't need to. They just sit there in neighborhoods like Ecorse, quietly feeding people food that tastes like home. And sometimes, that's the whole point.

For food, we shared two appetizers and honestly could have made a meal out of them. The Dominican Flag was incredible: crispy fried plantains, perfectly melty fried cheese, Dominican salami and smoky longaniza, all topped with pickled red onions that added the perfect zing. Every bite was packed with flavor and felt like true comfort food. We also loved the Loaded Yuca Balls; crispy golden yuca stuffed with cheese and topped with roasted pineapple, jalapeños, sour cream, and bacon. The combination of sweet, spicy, cheesy, and savory was amazing. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, the atmosphere was welcoming, and the service was great. We'll definitely be back to try more from the menu!

Our waitress was attentive, friendly, and did a great job throughout our meal. I ordered the Garlic Chimichurri Shrimp. While the shrimp was cooked well, it had a pretty fishy taste that just wasn't for me, and I wasn't a fan of the cilantro aioli. Several people in our group really liked the pineapple dressing, though, so I'd definitely give that a try if I went back. Next time, I'd order a different entrée because there were several other dishes that looked delicious. The only thing that felt a little off was when we first walked in. The gentleman at the front just stared at us without greeting or acknowledging us, which was a bit intimidating. It wasn't a huge deal, but a simple "Hi, we'll be with you in a moment" would have made for a warmer first impression. Overall, it was a good experience, and I'd definitely return to try something different on the menu. I also had the flan, which was pretty good and the Tropical Bay House which was tasty! ,
