On June 21, 2025, I had an 8:00 AM appointment at Styles by Lyles, located at 619 17th St Suite E, Phenix City, AL, for a quick weave with Sharon Petit. As a new client, I was truly excited. I got up early and arrived at 7:45 AM, ready for the experience. Inside, I was greeted by the barber and ShaRhonda Lyles, who has done my hair in the past. Although she doesn't do quick weaves, we've shared friendly conversation before. When I told her I was there for Sharon, she asked what time my appointment was. I said 8:00 AM--and the look on her face told me something was off. I asked what was wrong, and she replied, "Sharon might be a little late, but she'll be here." But her tone and body language told a different story. By 8:15, there was still no sign of Sharon and no update. I asked the barber if this was normal, and he said I needed to speak with ShaRhonda since she manages the stylists. When I asked again, ShaRhonda walked away from me, smiling, and said, "Yes, she be late--but I have no control over that." At that moment, I saw a side of her that made it clear: as a client, I didn't matter. It didn't matter that we'd once shared laughter. What mattered most--professionalism, communication, respect--was missing. I decided to leave. I then messaged Sharon on multiple platforms: left her a voicemail, messaged her via Vagaro, called her, and even checked on her well-being. Hours later, she responded on Facebook, saying she hadn't replied because she's been "getting scammers." That had absolutely nothing to do with our scheduled appointment or the fact that I was left waiting without a word. ShaRhonda never followed up--not to check on Sharon, not to reach out to me, not to acknowledge what had happened. This was deeply disappointing. I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I gave them my time. But what I didn't receive was the most basic courtesy: respect. I will never return to Styles by Lyles. No matter how many laughs we've shared in the past, character is shown in moments that require accountability. To those in the beauty industry: when someone sits in your chair, they're not just trusting you with their hair--they're trusting you with their time, their energy, and their experience. That's not a small thing. That's a privilege. And to anyone reading this: know your worth. Don't let anyone treat you as if your presence doesn't matter. I got a recommendation from my friend in NC who used to live here. What I like about this place is that it has a mixed bag of clientele- an older crowd and young too. Crystal is fantastic at color and it's nice to find a place in town that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, especially as I have a root touch up every 4 weeks. Skip was my stylist, and I could see why my mom has been going to him for six years now. He listened carefully to what I described and made sure to articulate his vision, a perfect match! A wonderful scalp massage was included with my hair washing, and Skip was a positive Renaissance man as he shaped layers while talking about sustainable farm-to-table dining where I live in upstate New York. Where else can you learn how to trap the snapping turtles in your one-acre pond while also learning how a properly shaped bob can be the perfect wash-and-wear style for a busy mom? The end result has me so happy and ready to take on whatever comes next, whether it's my rambunctious two-year-old or a room full of academics ready to talk about the inclusivity-virality dynamic in social media promotions of student services. Brenda did the hair of the bride, the mother of the bride, and flower girl. All three clients were very happy!! However, Whitney Jones arrived in a terrible mood and was extremely rude to the bridesmaids. It is never polite to tell the customer that you do not want to be there, especially when the customer consists of four women paying extra for a Sunday hair syle. She told each of us it was too early although it was only 9 am. She said she did not like to do braids (even though that is currently the syle trend) and told several of us we would look like we were going to the prom with that look. She did not style any of our hair the way we wanted and put black rubber bands (that we had to cut out) and useless bobby pins in our hair. All four of our hair styles fell before we got to the wedding. Finally, when asked what my friend (who was assisting us with makeup since we didn't have a lot of time) did for a living, Whitney laughed when I said she taught special education. I was humiliated that she responded that way. I have been going to William's Salon for several years and have always had great service. I was very disappointed with Whitney as a stylist.
