Three of our four children (ages 17, 16, and 7) were in need of new glasses. I am an avid supporter of small local business shops. ( I love the variety available in Maynard.) I was thrilled when I learned that an optical shop opened down town. My kids already had their eye exams but they still needed their glasses. One night when they were all home we walked down to Look Optical. My 7 year old was enjoying herself more than if she were in a candy store. She tried on so many glasses. Alex was wonderful. He didn't even mind that she was trying on adult glasses. He helped her find several pairs that she liked, that also look good on her facial structure. She had a tough time narrowing it down but she picked a great pair! I love them on her! She was even excited about wearing glasses again! She had been asking why she needed to wear them, she didn't like to any more. Thanks Alex for having some great kids glasses to choose from! It was such a great experience for her. She in the end, found a pair that were half frames with anti-glare lenses , that she really liked. My 16 year old son found a pair he liked almost immediately! Alex was great when it came to discussing the different options available for the lenses. He ended up getting transition lenses with an anti-glare lens. He couldn't wait to get his glasses! He ABSOLUTELY LOVES them! He is on the baseball team and has commented on how great they are for catching. He said Mr. Thayer was really nice and he would go back again. I also have a fourth child that is 14. He also needs glasses. His are for reading. When he is due for his next appointment you better believe we will be walking down town! We started going to Look Optical after moving to Stow in 2014. From the first visit, we found Alex, Trish and the team to be warm and inviting. The store was clean and well-organized, and the glasses selection was superb. Both my husband and I wear contacts, as needed, and in this field, we found Look Optical to be heads-and-tails above the competition. Alex did a contact lens evaluation on both of us, at our initial appointment. He measured the shape of our eyes, and re-checked our prescriptions, among other things. He had numerous varieties of contacts in stock, and, based on his measurements, was able to recommend and trial the best contact brand and prescription for our eyes. I have chronically dry eyes, and he knew the products so well that he was able to recommend contacts that not only met my astigmatism prescription needs, but also balanced my prescription with my need for a thin contact to help with my dry eyes. In the 15 years before going to Look Optical, I had never found a contact that was comfortable. He got it right on the first try. Recently, we moved to Maine. After visiting an optometrist and optician here, I realized that I needed to return to Alex, and his standard of care; after 5 appointments with my local optometrist, the fit of my contacts still wasn't right. I setup an appointment to drive the 4.5 hours to see Alex, and it was well worth it. The contacts that he recommended fit perfectly, and the clarity was better than the last 5 trials I'd received locally. He worked closely with me, as he always does, to find the right fit, and was willing to ship trials, and my order, to us in Maine. I also felt safe being at Look Optical during the pandemic. He is operating by appointment only, and is constantly cleaning/sterilizing. Since I have a child that is at high-risk for COVID-19, I was extremely grateful for his extra attention to detail and commitment to his customers. This shop is as good as it gets, and I am a fan for life. The owner, Alex, really cares about his customers and ensuring their satisfaction. He happily answers questions and takes as much time as necessary to ensure you get what is important for you and that you understand the options and can weigh them. It was particularly refreshing to have him recommend less expensive lens options to me for my progressive prescription sunglasses based on my intended use for them. When it turned out that there was a slight defect in the frame (due to the sunglass frame manufacturer, not to Look Optical) he took care of it extremely quickly and had a new pair ready for me in days - he stands behind what he sells. Based on the positive experience with the sunglasses I purchased a pair of new progressive rimless glasses, and the experience was again outstanding. He customized the glasses to my request, provided me information which led to my selection of Nikon lenses (all I can say is WOW - they are by far the best progressives I've ever had - comfortable and clear from the moment I put them on, with absolutely no time needed to "get used to them"). Look Optical is one of those gems - a small town feel with personalized service, great quality, where customers are much more than just a number in a big box store. Earlier in the week I had broken my sunglasses and was in need of a replacement pair. On a whim I walked into LOOK Optical hoping to find sunglasses at a reasonable price. I was greeted by Alex the owner who took great care in fitting me with a nice new pair of sunglasses. There was a variety to choose from and with Alex's help we found a pair that were very stylish that I liked. Then the customer service kicked in. These sunglasses were a nonprescription pair but he took the time to adjust them to my face so they fit perfectly. While he was adjusting the nose pads I asked him to make sure that they would be tight enough to stay on while I was skiing or biking. He altered the arms that go behind your ears to a perfect fit. I couldn't believe the manner and care with which he went about fitting the sunglasses. Imagine if I was in need of prescription glasses or contacts? LOOK Optical has a large selection of contacts and prescription frames for adults and children. It was an excellent experience and I'm very happy with my purchase. I so impressed with Alex's knowledge, incredible patience and ability to focus on MY needs. First off, I'm an artist so I realize I am particularly sensitive to the nuances of vision. It is my livelihood after all. I need rather complex lens, and in the last 3 years I've needed prisms added for double vision. But getting lens that actually work for me has been frustrating. I was looking at a 3rd retry of the same prescription and desparate when I went to Alex and Dr Catalano. Long story short, by asking the right questions, carefully examining my various lens and eyes, it might actually come down to something as simple as cataracts that have gotten considerably worse. Therefore despite the prescription and lens being correct, the cataracts would still interfere with my vision. Alex could have just made me new lens anyway and they would have been expensive. But he didn't. Rather he referred me to another Dr. for a consultation about the cataracts. I can't believe that in this day and age where everyone seems willing to take your money that this business person is more committed to his service, than his own pocketbook. I had been shopping around for a few weeks looking for a place to get an eye exam and new glasses. While visiting my sister in Maynard I wandered into Look Optical and found a hidden gem. Look Optical has a wonderful and unique selection of frames made by local and international artists to choose from. I could tell as soon as I walked in that I had not seen these frames in the other stores where I had looked in the past few weeks. Alex and Linda are lovely and it was a pleasure talking with them as they helped me to select a frame that suited me. They offered feedback and were so wonderfully patient as I tried on different frames. With so many beautiful frames to choose from it took me some time to make a decision! The folks at Look Optical took the time to listen and work with me without rushing and without pressure. The Doctor who conducted my eye exam was professional and friendly. I had such a great experience shopping here at Look Optical! I had purchased a Groupon a while ago and desperately needed prescription Sunglasses. I am SO happy that I had purchased the Groupon, because it brought me to this lovely store! The frames were unique and fabulous, I had never seen them anywhere else. I had the pleasure of spending time picking out frames with Linda, she was so helpful and great at giving me feedback. Then I met Alex who helped finish up the process. I LOVE my new sunglasses. They are sleek and stylish, I have never seen any like it, plus Alex was able to match my prescription and help me figure out what I wanted in a prescription sun glass lens. I stopped in out of curiousity to see what this new optical shop was like. Wow, was I surprised! Real classy and professional appearance inside. The owner, Alex Thayer, was very friendly and approachable. He was so nice, yet very professional at the same time, that I immediately asked him to retrieve my records from Precision Vision in Acton (they're terrible). Right then, I ordered contacts for myself, brought my husband in the next day to order new glasses and brought my Mom in two days later to also order new glasses. I feel so good about supporting a local business and it's very easy to highly recommend "Look Optical" because of the combination of competency, professionalism, reasonable prices, honesty and kindness that my entire family received by the owner. Going to Look Optical has been a great experience. My two boys (ages 4 and 5) came in for eye exams, and the doctor was wonderful with them - talked right at their level, explained what she was doing, and made them feel really comfortable about their first eye exam. Alex was fantastic in helping pick out good looking and child friendly frames, and in making sure that they fit correctly and were comfortable for them. He also was great at talking right at their level, and teaching them how to care for their new glasses. I have gone to Look for my own frames and eye exams as well, and have always been impressed with Alex's professionalism and knowledge about what people want and need in eyewear. Alex and Look go above and beyond. They also have really cool glasses I've never seen anywhere else. Alex helped me find the best value with my current insurance and the first pair of glasses that make me feel attractive without contacts. He sent my glasses back to the factory to get the thinnest lens possible despite my extreme near-sightedness. He stayed late to fit my glasses with a smile on his face and allowed me to borrow frames for a few days to make my initial decision. He invited me to call him anytime if I have any problems and gave a personal number. The website says some hokey things about how much Alex and Look really care about their patients. Look Optical is incredible. I have purchased several pairs of glasses from Alex, all perfect in terms of fit and a great look. His selection of frames is unlike any other store. And most important he wants you to be happy but with the right product for the job. I just had cataract surgery and have consulted him on every decision.
