They brought me to a small room with a bed that had no rails and very little support. The feel was like a hammock, not good for someone right out of the hospital. I was on a restrictive diet yet the first night I was there I was given steak cut up and some sort of sweet potato. I ate it, I was so hungry. A day went by and the next morning I was told they were calling an ambulance to take me back to the emergency room. I had blockage in the intestines. (This was reason for my emergency surgery in the first place!) My biggest complaint was my medications were supposed to be sent to them when I left the hospital. When I inquired, they didn't have them. I had my last pain pill at 2:00 that afternoon. It was now 9:00 p.m., I was told I would have to wait until the pharmacy opened the next morning. I had an incision down the middle of my abdomen and nothing for pain. Horrible and incompetent!! I was finally given medication for the pain 9:30 that morning. I couldn't sleep the pain was so intense. Around 3:00 am I called for the nurse, I was in tears and covered with sweat, my hospital gown and sheets were soaked, and I was chilly. The person who finally came told me they had no other clothes for me to wear. No offer to change the sheets, she got another blanket and threw it over me. The fastest response time was 20 minutes, I know because I watched the clock. I felt frightened and trapped when that door closed, no one came and checked on me on a regular basis. When I was readmitted to the hospital, I felt such relief! I would be taken care of and no longer felt afraid. Be very careful where you send your loved ones. Especially if they are in a weak condition. Sincerely, Beth Pisz

Heartland wasn't a perfect match for Mom, but it was a great match. I checked Mom in based on prior reviews, so I had high expectations. There were some bumps along the way, but I was really impressed with how dedicated the people were to meeting Mom's needs, making her comfortable, and resolving any issues that came up. Mom spent about three months at Heartland paid for by Medicare as rehab and about three months self-pay in their nursing care. It's all the same care, it's just a matter of who is paying. She spent a week on their assisted living floor trying to live independently, but it just didn't work. What I was struck by, at all levels, was how approachable everyone was. From the aides to the administrator, everyone was there for Mom and for our family. I wish I could name each of their names (I have them all written down here somewhere), but I'd miss someone important and I don't want to do that. More than anything else, Mom wanted to get back to her apartment at her old assisted living center, but Heartland took much better care of her and she was just too ill to return to her old lifestyle. Ultimately, Mom died at Heartland. I could wish for a better ending to her story, but not a better ending to her life. She died comfortably, loved, and well taken care of. Thank you Heartland and each of you who worked with Mom. I would have no hesitation recommending Heartland. Visit for yourself. The building is a bit worn, but the staff are wonderful, organized, and they react quickly to the needs of their patients and residents.

First of all I'd like to say that the Clairmont is doing a pretty good job but could do better. I…read morehave had trouble with the billing department getting back to me. There was a problem with the facility apartment insurance request. I paid and submitted the forms about a month prior to move-in and the first bill over 6 weeks later included a fee for not having insurance. I tried contacting the billing office and requested a call back to get things clarified. This did not happen and the problem was not fixed. I again went to Francine who has been my anchor at the Clairmont to get problems fixed. I finally received approval of the policy on October 17th but I had submitted the information in early August! In addition the bill itself was incorrect. The dinning room food has improved, per my father, but the utensils are still awful! I do wish your administrative staff would try using the forks at the facility and imagine that they have arthritis in their hands as these residents frequently do. My dad does better with most plastic forks than the forks supplied at the Clairmont. Please, this should be an easy upgrade. One thing we really appreciate is the ability to have a pet and to have a fenced "yard" area outside of their apartment. I think this adds a homey feel for many of the residents. Better water access would be a plus for those with outside plants. You have outside waste bins for doggy waste but no plastic bags at the one outside of the building for the last 6 weeks. Your showers do not have safety bars inside of the shower, Since most of the residents at this facility use walkers, canes or wheelchairs, why do you think it unnecessary to have a safety bar inside of the shower? This would be a considerate and wise upgrade for the apartments. Overall, we (the family) really like this facility and the people who live and work there. My Dad is still adjusting......

I tried A Place for Mom, but the information was outdated, pricing wasn't accurate, and I was bombarded with calls from facilities that didn't match our needs. I was connected with Oasis through a social worker, and working with Aaron has been an entirely different experience. He immediately understood my situation, my budget, and the level of care my dad needs. He selected the most appropriate options and even took me on a tour himself. Since I don't drive, he kindly drove me to each facility. Aaron is local and very familiar with the area's memory care communities. He had the most up-to-date pricing, availability, and real feedback from residents and families. On the first day, we visited three facilities -- all of them excellent, within my tight budget, and truly appropriate for my dad. I didn't need to look any further. The entire service was completely free of charge, which was such a relief during an already overwhelming time. I am incredibly grateful for Oasis and for Aaron's guidance. Thanks to their help, I finally feel like my dad will be in good hands and I can start to get my life back.

And in Skilled Nursing, there seemed to be a stream of people in and out but we as family, had to be there there 8 am - 8 pm once she was unresponsive because unless we asked for help with hygiene tasks or ensuring meds were given, we didn't see them done without being present. Her room seemed to be reasonably clean. And we added Hospice to her care team so that fills in some gaps that don't seem included in Skilled Nursing. Downsides are things like Call Buttons not working. Forced movements during PT that cause injuries, even when my mother objected. The swelling in her ankles made her ankles hit equipment and her leg became raw and inflamed to the degree a blanket on her skin was painful. Staff not being sure what time medications were administered. (we asked about a dose and although they said they gave it, no one could say when or give a time. And a family member was visiting ( that family member was ME) and no one came in while I was there so was she given meds or not? We were a bit concerned because not even a time could be confirmed through a chart. Worrisome. No one there (including me!) knows how to put in hearing aids!! I googled this process to learn how to insert them because my mother was frantic without them and I had zero experience with them. She (my mother) was bleeding from her foot, with blood pooling on the floor. No one noticed so I had to summon someone to bandage her up. My mother chose this facility and it was recommended by her doctors. She was lucid, cognitive and very involved her decisions when she arrived. This was her choice and a place she felt was the best fit for her (home or family living was no longer an option. The family really felt obligated to respect her wishes since she was fully capable of calling the shots.) She did pass away 22 days later. Maybe my expectations were too high. Or maybe I am just paralyzed by grief. I will say we were fortunate that we had 3 family members that took 4 hour shifts to be there for the 12 hours of visiting hours every single day. I can't imagine how things would have gone without our being there if she had lived long enough that we couldn't we there 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. Regardless of where my head is (grief stricken which is why I didn't review while she was still alive). I am still unsure on how I feel about the SNF side of Brookdale. Many things are in poor repair. Paint, scuffed walls, cracks in walls and doors, light and call buttons not working. My mother was self pay and for a shared room and 9300.00 a month, I thought ... I don't know... I guess I thought it should be cleaner and better maintained. Final note: parking was kind of a nightmare on weekends. Be prepared to park, then walk quite a distance to the entrance. I have a handicap placard but so does almost everyone visiting. So... OK if your loved one is lucid. Ok if you can be there long days and keep an eye on things we assumed they did in Skilled Nursing. The broken lights didn't affect care I guess but as a troubled family, we kind of expected better care (like not having to point out pools of blood or the fact she got bedsores in only 3 weeks and could they please reposition her more often? Then we had to ask them to do these things. It's a tough field to work in. Staff is understaffed and probably underpaid. I do know if I personally need this kind of care, with my children out of state, I would not want to come here.
