Loma Bonita
Michael P.

So I get a hot tip from the one and only Rick N. about this Loma Bonita. He says man this place has got you written all over it...'cause I'm always up for a real deal Mexican Taqueria adventure ya know...and this was definitely an adventure, this place is a 100% AUTHENTIC Mexican experience no doubt. I've been in some rough lookin' Taquerias, but when I rolled up on the scene here I had to think twice about whether or not I was gonna go in, it's a bit of a run down, sketchy lookin' place in the bushes. When I pulled in the dirt driveway I had to go to the back of the building and turn around and they had one of those smokers on wheels made out of an old 275 gallon drum parked at the back door and smoke was rollin' hard out of its smokestacks...I knew then I was goin' in. I got some odd looks when I walked in, I think the folks in here thought I was lost. There was not the first word of English spoken in here, everyone I encountered spoke to me in Español from the gentlemen that greeted me to the waitress that took my order to the guy that rung me up at check-out and I did the same back, so a little basic Spanish would be needed here. As you enter the front door, the check out counter, the small grocery section and the meat counter are all to the right, and to left is a doorway that goes into the taqueria dining area. The dining area is neat and clean, postin' a 95 sanitation grade "A" on the wall. There's about 6 tables with red & white checkered tablecloths with wooden chairs and a bar counter with stools. The menu is on the wall. The 4 stars are based solely on the food, I'd give 4.5 if I could...I ordered 2 chicken tacos and 2 pastor tacos to-go and they were pretty outstanding. They are served street style on corn tortillas with cilantro and onion with radish slices and lime wedges along with the homemade red & green sauces which were both great with a good amount of heat which made the tacos that much better. Everything is fresh and homemade, the pastor was great. The menu has a good number of options with tacos, sopes, gorditas, fajitas, burritos, empanadas, a number of soups, seafood items and a variety of plate options and more...and if you go back to the meat counter, they have whole cooked chickens and trays of what I believe was barbacoa that all looked pretty awesome, packaged up ready for purchase, which is probably what was cookin on the smoker out back. I wouldn't hesitate to come back here for a minute, I'm sure I will at some point soon. I've found that sometimes most awesome authentic Mexican food comes from some of the roughest lookin' little places...like this one. When I pulled in, there was one car in the little dirt parking lot, when I left there was about 15. Thanks for the tip Rick. oh yeah...and the guy sellin' socks out of the back of his suv beside the building is great, he showed me his whole selection of socks, black or white??? he got you covered, 4 pair'll run ya $8 bucks, I told him I was good on socks right now, but if I ran across anybody needin' a pair or 2 that I'd send'em his way.

My wife and I went with a friend of the family and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the restaurant…read more The vibe felt very much like a chain restaurant vibe, but the food tasted authentic. The restaurant itself was really clean despite the lunch rush just having gone through. So we were really impressed with the tables being kept up after the lunch rush and the chairs were comfortable as well. The prices are fair especially with how good the food is. Even our family friend who is notoriously picky was impressed by the food. One downside was that it was difficult to understand the lady behind the counter however we were able to order by pointing to what we wanted. One of the meals we got we aren't sure exactly what it was, as we pointed to something someone else had gotten. Our friend got the chicken quesadilla and she said it was really good. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the guacamole. It was a bit thin and bland. We went based on a recommendation of a coworker who said they had three tacos for $9.99 as part of a meal and they said they were so good and it was a really great value which is why we went there. We definitely weren't disappointed and plan on returning.

With what I learned, I just can't see myself going back and anybody who has Alpha-Gal syndrome, you may want to really think twice about what you ordered here. I ordered a vegetarian combo meal and got the food, I ate it and about a half hour later I was on the toilet, and it was not a fun night. I called the restaurant the next day because I've had this happen to me before, although with this place, I ordered through GrubHub so I wasn't able to ask questions, but you assume when something is listed as vegetarian that it actually is. Anyway, the refried beans are sometimes fried and vegetable oil, sometimes fried and lard. The day that I ordered mine, well all week they had been fried and lard which makes them not vegetarian. When you stop consuming those types of animal byproducts your stomach doesn't know how to digest them so I had this food and my body immediately was like what's going on and sure enough trying to reject it. Somebody who has Alpha Gal syndrome like I mentioned earlier can get super sick from this, like it could have serious detrimental effect on them.

We always get cheese enchiladas ordered this way and unfortunately the restaurant didn't see the request and we got beef. The driest beef enchiladas I have ever tasted. All that was inside was beef in a tortilla with sauce on top. Even if my vegetarian guests did not get to eat their meals, they weren't missing anything. I would Never order these from here again.

Pancho Villas is the epitome of consistent Mexican food here in the Triad. This is our go to spot…read morefor Mexican as it is always a positive experience. The service is good as the staff is friendly and prompt on checking on you or refilling your chips and salsa. Ambiance is friendly although it was a bit cold the day we went so we left our jackets on throughout dinner. Business there is typically steady so if you go at a peak time there may be a wait. We went at 5:30 on a Friday and got right in but by the time we left around 7, the wait was a few people deep. The food is always good and portions are large. As with most Mexican places, they start you off with chips and salsa. The chips do not have salt on them so you may need to add it if you enjoy a salted chip. The salsa is good and not very spicy although my wife who doesn't do spice said it was a little much for her. I had the Cocina plate which is chicken, shrimp, and steak with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and cheese sauce over rice. This is my go to as it's delicious and always hits the spot. My wife had a fajita quesadilla that was overflowing with meat and veggies and she really enjoyed. We tried some of their Paloma drinks this last time which were very strong but had good flavor.

I also love the chicken soup on cold days. It's the best around. The restaurant is always clean and they recently updated the back dining area.
