When I lived in the neighborhood, Locust Bar, was a frequent stop for me, but since I moved across Broad I hadn't been in awhile. I'm happy to report things haven't changed. When you approach, they always look closed. Dim lights and closed blinds. In the evening there's usually someone checking IDs. You can sit at the large bar or the 10 or so booths they have. Music is controlled by TouchTunes and the TV's always have whatever game is playing on. Many dive bars in Philly are very neighborhood focused and sometimes you feel a bit out of place if you're not a "regular", this is not the case at Locust Bar. Their bartenders and friendly and efficient, and the crowd is usually friendly and talkative. Standard selection of drinks and a pretty wide menu. The food is good, but not everything is great. The staff is very rude when it's come to a refund especially when staff said "if food is untouched you can get full refund." sever who said this name is Lisa. she gave bags of chips as a comp for order being messed up. Gives an attitude when calling to let them know order is wrong and has poor customer service. The Manger of the establishment is also rude and condescending. The staff needs to get more help if you get confused or can't multi-task properly. The Manger and employee do not understand that if the establishment messed up and burned food , missing orders and making mistakes and not wanting to be professional and make things right. Manger did not want to remake food even after saying he would not give full refund. Order was over $60.00 They need serious oversight and training if it's to fast paced. First things first! On the door it says "smoking permitted" we both get excited because she smiles, I quit, BUT I always appreciate a good smoking bar. The bar was about 75% full but we found two seats right in the middle. We met 4 LOVELY patrons! This bar is so friendly it's where you go to make friends!! This seemed like a great dive bar and the reviews were very enticing, however, upon entering most of the patrons were smoking inside the bar. I was unaware it was still allowed. My Girlfriend and our friend came here after dinner for drinks but sadly had to promptly walk back out due to the cigarette smoke. Went here a few times. Had a good atmosphere that made me come back. I come this Saturday and the regular bartender recognizes me and starts cursing me out in front of everyone because he remembers I didn't leave a tip on my tab the week before. The reason I did this was because I pre-tipped in cash beforehand. Bro didn't see that or just didn't remember and didn't care when I tried to explain it to him. He was very happy to have someone to yell at. Even if he was right and I left no tip I would not expect that type of behavior. I'm probably like half his age and handled that situation with more grace then that petulant man baby ever could muster on his best day. I've never been banned from a bar before, definitely didn't think I'd get banned for being too nice and tipping early. The food was nice and I can tell there are some hard working people there. For taking the plunge into a down and dirty dive bar that' manages to bring forth the best of times, it really doesn't get much better than Locust Bar. The smoke flows through the air and onto your clothes the next morning. The bit of food that they have is of the fried unmemorable variety. And its cash only, which all add up to good reasons to merit the three stars. But at the same time the legendary pitcher pours of Yuengling and other draughts are cheap and easy to share among a group of after whiskey revelers. Although its the digital variety that doesn't appeal to my nostalgic side; the music that Locust's many patrons have plugged into it make it absolutely diverse and fantastic. Yet it also isn't too loud or overpowering making it perfect for carrying on conversation while you rock on. Add on awesome bartenders, and solid quizzo and karaoke events on rotation, and you have plenty of reasons to imbibe here. read more

I used yelp and came across the right spot walking from market street passing several bars to have a great reception with the locals and bartender (I never got her name within the 3 to 4 hrs of drinking.. but with the flow of energy that was shared he name wasn't needed) My bartender was amazing, pours a great drink.. bar food does the job of giving u a little more weight for you to continue your night downing a few more rounds. I really really wanted to like this place despite the gross smokiness. Me and my husband stopped in to play pinball and have a drink. It was not busy at all and the bartender straight up ignored us. I even made eye contact with him and he looked away and kept cleaning whatever. At a dive bar I don't expect excellent service , hugs etc but I do expect a drink after waiting five minutes on a super slow wed night. Sorry mr angry bartender we usually tip very well. I've been to this bar several times prior to my recent visit this weekend. So with that being said I would've given it a 4-5 star rating, but my experience this weekend with the bartender AJ was unbelievable to say the least! I went on Saturday to locust bar for wings and fries. I work at the hospital nearby, so my coworkers and I went over for our usual meal. We waited over an hour for our food, which they said it would be 25 minutes over the phone, but we didn't complain about it. We patiently waited for our food. When 40 minutes went by we asked the bartender how much longer because it was our lunch break so we had to go back. He said 5 more minutes. Ok. When he hands us the bag we asked for two additional sauce. He randomly says. "NO FUCK YOU AND FUCK OFF" my coworkers and I looked at each other baffled. And he refused to give us the sauces. The other people at the bar stated he's been disrespecting everyone at the bar that night. I'll definitely be speaking with the manager about this experience. I have NEVER received such terrible service!!! I will not be returning because of how he treated us. If I could give -1 stars I would. read more
