Using his knowledge and skill, he had the Security Chest open in approximately 10-15 minutes. I asked what was my cost and his response - NO CHARGE. What a wonderful surprise. My impression of the business - clean, well organized, a variety of quality products and ample parking outdoors. Easy. I already had the key cut, had 2 OEM keys to use, but I was having problems programming the key myself so I THOUGHT a locksmith would be able to handle it no problem. Same model #, same transponder signal, but after 15 minutes in my car, he came out and was unable to program the key. I thought, "man that sucks, I guess I'll take it to the dealership but was hoping to use the locksmith because he was less expensive." THEN, he says "That'll be $25 for trying"... I can totally understand being charged if I had someone come out to my location and through some type of unforeseen problem, was unable to perform his job. But I was genuinely surprised when he said that. I looked him in the eye and said "25 dollars for trying?" "Yep." I, passive aggressively take out $25 and slap it on the counter. "Oh, after taxes, it's actually $27.xx." I am fuming inside but rather than deal with an argument, I'd rather leave this review to steer others to a more reputable company. I ended up at the dealership and 20 minutes later, I have a functioning key. There was no TRY charge. There was a DONE charge. And I can guarantee that had they not been able to program the key, they wouldn't have charged me a "try" charge. Imagine going to a restaurant and ordering your food and your waiter comes back to the table and says "the cook tried to make your food but wasn't able to so that will only be $25 for trying." I don't live in Kansas City, I actually live in Los Angeles, however I needed to copy a Wink Haus key (which is rare in the US but common I think in Europe). In any case, I found Heart of America Locksmith through Yelp and Randy had posted a picture of a key blank that was similar to what I was looking for. I called and I asked if he could make a copy based on a photo which he said he wouldn't (in retrospect, copying a key from a photo is probably illegal now that I think about it). However, he did offer to look at the pictures of my key and see if he had a blank that matched which he could send to me. After I sent him photos of my key however, he determined that the blanks he had were similar but not the same and sent me a picture of what he had. He then gave me a suggestion for which blank I might be looking for though.
