    Not a bad view..

We stopped off here for a night on the way north for a weekend break in Ardnamurchan. The hotel is in a lovely quiet location in North Ballachulish beside the old ferry crossing here, now supplanted by the bridge. The lady on the desk was very friendly and welcoming when we arrived, and even showed us to our room upstairs. Although we arrived just after 8pm, we were still in time to order dinner in the restaurant, and were soon tucking into some fine sea bass with mussels. They had kindly noted my dairy intolerance and the chef had prepared an alternative sauce for mine with capers, which was perhaps a touch too piquant for the fish, but better than the creamy alternative, and full marks to them for trying. There are lovely gardens and spectacular views over Loch Leven and the mountains to the south from the dining room, and watching the colours change with the sunset whilst sipping a glass of fine Pedro Ximenez sherry was a memorable close to the evening. Our room was on the corner, so we had loads of space and views both south and west. The en-suite was roomy and had a great shower, and the room also had a decent-sized television instead of the usual 12" budget sets that you frequently find elsewhere. The Wi-Fi is free although there is patchy reception in the rooms, which is just the way I like it. I don't sleep well with a strong Wi-Fi signal in the room. The only problem, and it was more of a comedy moment than a problem, was in the morning when we couldn't get our room door to open and had to phone down to reception for help. There was some issue with the way you took the key out of the door while holding the inside knob that caused it to lock up. It certainly gave us a laugh, but in other circumstances could have been problematic. Not worth deducting a star from the review for however. We had a morning foray through the beautiful gardens down to the old ferry slipway, where you get good views up and down the loch. There's a footpath that goes along the loch frontage to the next bay, but we didn't have time to explore that on this trip. It's also worth checking out the small selection of locally-made jewellery and gifts on display at reception; we found some lovely earrings and brooches that were very reasonably priced.

We spent to nights in this beautiful hotel set on the loch in North Ballachullish. It is perfectly located for visiting Fort William, Ben Nevis, Glen Coe even a day trip to Oban an the island ferries. The Hotel staff are great and happy to give you information and tips. The Bar is a fantastic place to sit back and relax with an expertly made cocktail. I had a delicious smoke infused Rob Roy. Watching the bartender make it was worth the price. Drink prices were reasonable. Full breakfast is included in the stay. I had the full Scottish breakfast my first morning. Too much to finish, but excellent. The Restaurant for Dinner was top shelf. This place got everything right. The Room (with it's 4 poster bed), Staff (can't say enough), Food and Drink, the setting and grounds and Location. Perfect.

room with a view! I can't cope with how beautiful it is here, the views are really something special. The birds are chirping the bumble bees going about their business and I'm sitting having a beer on my balcony looking out contemplating moving here. The room is pretty basic but a small matter considering the stunning surroundings. Try asking not to be put into room 12 if you like an early night as the restaurant is next door and its loudish. Front desk staff can't be faulted in any way, the are friendly and fun. Nothing a hassle for them. A fantastic welcome to the property. The restaurant and pub staff let the team down a bit walking around with the misery guts looks on their faces. I think management need to boot these young clowns out of there and employ more people like the breakfast lady who is so beautiful. Great smile on her face, greats you as if you have been friends for years. " morning, my darlings" This is the kind of staff needed here. HOT TIP OF THE DAY I guess you are either a people person or not, those who aren't should walk dogs for a living, those who are (front desk & breakfast lady) should be given a pay rise and sit in on interviews when hiring potential staff.

Could not walk around the bed if someone was standing or sitting at the bottom. The chair was hiding behind the bathroom door. If the overhead light worked we would have seen it earlier. When we brought the issue up to management, their answer was "It is an old hotel and the rooms are assigned at the time of booking and it is the luck of the draw. REALLY!!!! The larger room had 3 large windows whereas the smaller room had a single 14" window. Be careful when booking this hotel. Lots of stairs and the room is "The luck of the draw!"

The staff is accommodating-the room was nice (no view though) and clean. However, the place was understaffed. When visiting their dining room, it was a frantic mess. Not enough wait staff to care for everyone. Long waits to get service, even with a reservation. The food was ok but not worth the high prices. I had the Sea Bass and it was overcooked and dry. When speaking with the staff, they shared their frustration with not being able to give good service due to being understaffed. The hotel manager was serving?! Again, not many choices in the area so you are kind of forced to eat/stay there. Overall we were happy with our stay.

It's a fairly large hotel amongst the many B&Bs outside of Fort William. Our rooms are a little noisy until 10pm or so. We asked for a room with a view and ended up with half of one obscured by the lounge/bar building. Room is compact but serviceable. The common rooms, however, are very relaxing to just sit and enjoy the Loch in the setting/morning sun. Nautical maps abound, and there are a couple of topological maps if you are considering a walk in the nearby Glens the next day (of course, you should *actually* acquire one should you do so). The food is, ah, conventional. We went for venison burgers and vension sausages (sauces a little salty), and enjoyed them without anything worthy of special mention. Except the goat cheese, which turned out quite blue-vein. It's as if the meat itself lack that game taste a venison should ideally have, and they're making up for it with the other ingredients.

Upon arrival, our first impression was of receptionist's curt "greeting". We then dragged our luggage through the mud to the "luxury lodges", which are simply huts in the middle of a nine-hole golf course overlooking a parking lot and a river. There is no privacy or view from the huts themselves. That's not to say the surroundings are not breathtaking. The "wee lodge" themselves look cool from the outside, but inside it's very small and moldy. The shower is the bathroom. One can sit on the toilet while taking their shower. The whole wee lodge will be wet and steamy for hours... bring flip flops. As flip flops among any other amenities are not provided. What is provided are very strict rules. I don't understand how it was so expensive. It's just camping. Maybe if it was a quarter of a price it would be worth it. We stayed in the riverbed lodges. For those looking to stay in the seabed lodges, just so you know, between the lodge and the lake, there's a busy, loud roadway and behind the lodges is a smaller road. The area itself is absolutely worth a visit, but there are many other lovely inns in the area. Learn from our mistake.

To be clear, much of the food was quite good, but the service was so exceptionally erratic that it detracted from almost every phase of the meal. Arrived on time for our 7pm reservations, and we were seated immediately. 15 minutes passed without even being acknowledged, so we hailed a waitress from the bar area and asked for some service. She sent over a waiter about 5 minutes later. We ordered everything: wine, appetizers and our mains. It was another 15 minutes before a single glass of wine appeared. The table next to us sat down 10 minutes AFTER us and ordered the same appetizers (steamed mussels), and got their food in less than 10 minutes. Another 15 minute wait and we had to ask about our appetizers before they came out. Mussels were EXCELLENT, which is the only reason this isn't a 1 star rating. My wife had the trout, which she loved. I ordered the duck breast, which the waiter emphasized would come out "red" which is very much how I like it. The duck was grey. Good flavor, but very tough and dry. The vegetables and barley were quite tasty, but the duck was a disappointment. After dinner, we passed on dessert, but I wanted to order a whiskey. The waiter seemed quite flustered, and said, "If you order whiskey from me, I'll have to go to the bar to get it, so better if you just pay your bill and order from the bar yourself." I told him then that the service had been "terrible" and he said, "I know." and walked off. We won't be eating here our second night, despite very few options in the Glencoe area. This was eating out at a fine dining price, with the service of a motel. Very sad.
