I have rented cars lots of times over the years - very often from Bergamo or Milan. I have never had an accident or delivered the rented car with more damages/scratches than were already there when collecting it. I have never experienced trouble with any rental company either, till now, with LOCAUTO.
When collecting the car at LOCAUTO, on March 30, I was first told to get snow chains as they are now by law mandatory till April 15. So I rented snow chains, which cost about 45 euro for one week! That's more than it costs to buy snow chains! My point is: If snow chains are mandatory, like the safety belts of the car, then they should be part of the rental fee itself.
But LOCAUTO's creative ways of getting money coming in did not stop here ...
When we collected the car on March 30 (we were two, a friend of mine and myself), there were some scratches on the car that were noted, and also one hub cap that was not looking nice. Regarding the latter, we were told this was nothing to worry about. However, when we delivered the car on April 6, the lady dealing with us, made a point of the hub cap. I explained the above. It was also illogical it should have been us, because then there should have been other damages ... which there weren't.
As far as I could understand this explanation was accepted by LOCAUTO's employee.
Shortly after I received the additional invoice for the snow chains, and I thought everything was settled. However, the day after I got an email from LOCAUTO saying they had charged my credit card 139 euro for the hub cap!
So, basically LOCAUTO picked me to pay for a hub cap that had been worn out with time, and needed (at some point) to be changed. Apart the fact that this is no less than theft, is the fact that this particuar hub cap usually costs 10-15 euro, not 139 euro ...
LOCAUTO makes you sign on an IPad when you fetch the car and when you deliver it back. As we all know, the screen of an iPad is not big, and what I saw when I signed upon delivery, was a fully tanked, OK car, thinking everything was fine. However, LOCAUTO mailed me, through very little helpful Autoeurope (the agent who did absolutely NOTHING to help me), a copy of the whole document. Here the hub cap was mentioned, despite the fact that the employee receiving the car made the appearance this was no longer an issue and certainly did not show me she had put it in for me to sign. In other words: I signed something I didn't know I was signing. I would of course NOT have signed had I known.
So I gave up trying to get mye money back. Nevertheless, I DO consider it worth while warning you about this rental company. LOCAUTO definitely DOES NOT come across as a company you can trust. Choose some other rental, even if it costs a bit more! read more
