Thanks to yelp, for helping me find this gem in Naples. We were using our GPS to walk to this restaurant. When it lead us to a dark, corner street, I was skeptical to keep walking. I saw an arrow sign on the side of an alley wall, and a small banner which had the name of the restaurant. So we kept walking towards the alley and finally saw the place on the left side at the end of that alley. We were greeted and seated right away at the dining area downstairs. I loved the interiors and the overall look of the restaurant. All the staff members were friendly, polite, and efficient. We tried: OCTOPUS- The octopus was cooked perfectly in a very tasty sauce. O'Rrau- The meat was so tender, the ziti was cooked al dente, and the ragu was fragrant and flavorful. CANNELE A GGENUVESA- The meat was very tender, the candele was cooked al dente, and the broth was excellent. LEMON CAKE- It was fluffy, light, and deliciously tangy. If you have any doubt on whether to keep walking into that small alley or turn around, just go. You will not regret it. The restaurant was beautiful, charming, and clean. The service was great. Locanda is a restaurant that should not be missed when in Napoli. So much history but more than that the hospitality and food is exceptional! Ate there twice in a week. One night there was a guitarist playing music for an animated Pagliacci. So fun! read more

What a great place! After a short meander down a bright back lane leading solely to the restaurant, you enter a cozy and charming space which actually has a large back room. What a wonderful find! Getting there is a bit of an adventure. We weren't at all sure we were heading in the right direction despite using both Google Maps and Apple Maps but after venturing down a twisted ally we found this historic gem of a restaurant! A tavern dating back the 14th century, frequented by the painter Caravaggio and other persons of equal fame, today this restaurant serves authentic Neapolitan cuisine that is both delicious and reasonably priced. We arrived at this non-touristy but busy restaurant on a Thursday night without a reservation, but they found a table for us within less than 5 minutes. Our waiter, Christian, was attentive but in an unobtrusive way. The food was delicious. We chose seafood dishes accompanied by a very nice, bubbly Chardonnay recommended by Christian. This culinary experience was completed by an airy babà au rum. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND following the unlikely looking route to this hidden gem. read more

My wife and I visited Locanda del Cerriglio and were beyond impressed. Don't let the fact it is tucked back in an alley deter you. The food was excellent; my pasta Neapolitan was of the best pasta dishes I have ever had and the dessert, a 7-chocolate chocolate cake was definitely something to remember. My wife had the pasta and potatoes, which she throughly enjoyed and commented tasted like home. Service was superb, attentive and charming. OMG! Where do I begin? First, this place is "in the cut" or pretty hidden. You won't find it unless you're looking for it so...LOOK FOR IT! The bruschetta was the best I've ever had. The tomatoes were fresh and perfectly seasoned, the bread was perfectly toasted and crunchy, the cream and anchovies brought balance that I didn't know I needed. The ziti with genovese (sp?) sauce...amazing!!! The pepperoncini side dish...delicious! A big part of dinner for me is the decor and the atmosphere. The decor was giving old world authentic Italy. The atmosphere was lively yet professional. Everyone made sure we had a great experience! And the bathrooms were modern and clean (very important for me). We couldn't decide where to go for dinner and did a little online research to find this place. It's tucked away in a little corner off the streets of Naples and super cute! The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent. We started off with the breaded mozzarella- this was good but not my favorite. For our second course we got a zucchini risotto and the pasta with tomato sauce, garlic and basil. I couldn't get enough of the pasta- I wish we had ordered two it was so good!!!! We got the grilled chicken as our third course which was extremely flavorful and then a hazelnut mouse cake for dessert. We also got a delicious bottle of wine from Taurasi. First of all, this place is located in a very unusual area. When I first approached what I thought was the sign for it, it led me into a dark and foreboding small alleyway. Then, as I cautiously walked through, there was another sign by a door so I thought I finally found it. Nope... the door led to a small stairwell into apartments! If you go down the alley past the sign, it led to more apartments. I could not find this place!! it was supposed to be opened, but nothing around where the sign was remotely looked like a restaurant. Absolutely the best meal I've had in Naples. Apologies for not remembering the Italien names for the dishes. My husband and I wanted the experience of a full meal from starters to primi to secondi to dessert and knew we couldn't do it without sharing. We began with the octopus in tomato sauce appetizer. Whole octopus served in a rich tomato sauce with bits of tangy/salty olives, capers, and toasted croutons. The octopus was perfectly cooked, the savory sauce a beautiful foil for the richness of the octopus. Next, we shared the gnocchi with ragu and mozzarella. Piping hot, the gnocchi had just the right amount of bite, paired brilliantly with creamy mozzarella and a whisper of basil. Divine! Secondi was cod in tomato sauce with raisins and capers. The fish was succulent and juicy, the sauce a perfect blend of sweet and tart. We finished with a serving of babka- tender brioche soaked in a sweet rum sauce. And of course espresso for two and limoncello. All that was left to order was reservations for tomorrow. Seek out this gem if you find yourself in Naples! read more

A MUST if you're in Napoli! Found the restaurant via yelp and saw some good reviews in english (which can be hard to find when you're out of the country) and decided to give it a try. Even though the previous reviews are 5 stars I didn't expect to be as pleased as I was. Went around 730/8 on a thursday and had no problem getting a table as the restaurant is quite roomy compared to the typical small restaurants we encountered in Rome. The staff speaks english and even offer an english/french menu. Mario and Angela were so welcoming and inviting. The restaurant is a homey authentic Italian restaurant with many Napoli locals and quality food. Out of all the restaurants I have been to on my trip (Milan, Rome, Positano, Napoli) Locanda del Cerriglio is by far the overall best from the ambience to the employees and the food. Try whatever the staff recommends as they know best. We had the octopus salad and stuffed squid and both were so fresh- and my family is very particular on seafood and could not believe how delicious both dishes were. 4.5 stars: 5 stars for quiet, attractive space, the excellent service, and the perfect timing. 4 stars for food/wine/espresso. We felt very comfortable and relaxed. Our server was professional and forewarned us that the risotto would take 20 minutes -- no problem: we told him we weren't in a rush and enjoyed lingering over our dinner. The waiter's wine recommendation was spot on. Best dish: delicious seafood risotto (this was a primi -- 2 person minimum). We also got the fish of the day (grilled sea bass) and grilled octopus, both of which were ok, but not excellent, a bit dry. We concluded our meal with good doppi espressi. In a historic building, dating back to at least 1610 when it was an inn and where the famous, controversial, and reportedly crazy artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was reportedly stabbed, you will find Locanda del Cerriglio. It was recommended by a friend and turned out to be a decent find, but with just a few major flaws. We started with two orders of the Cuoppo di Fritturina Napoltana (€8 each - deep fried crocchè, arancini and zeppoline) to give our friends a taste of these deep-fried Neapolitan specialties. The total of four crocchè (potato dumplings), four arancini (rice balls), and 8-10 zeppoline (dough balls containing algae) came to €16 ($18.30) for an order that would cost 1/4 of that (between €4 and €5) at almost any respectable pizzeria Napolitana. For our main courses, I had the Puparuolo 'mButtunato (€9/$10.30), eggplant stuffed with pepperoni (sauteed bell peppers) and mozzarella, dipped in egg and coated with breadcrumbs, then fried to a golden brown. I have never had it before and it was quite good. My wife got the Provola Affumicata (€8/$9.15 - baked smoked provola cheese) and my old high school buddy had the Pesce Spada alla Griglia con Insalata (€14/$16 - grilled swordfish with side salad) both of which they seemed to enjoy although there was an unappealing puddle of water at the bottom of my wife's baked bowl of provola when she was done. My buddy's wife and dear friend, who is gluten intolerant, ordered the 'O Scarpariello (€8/$9.15 - made with gluten-free pasta and cherry tomatoes, peperoncini, parmigiano and pecorino cheeses, and basil). The sauce was OK, but the pasta was not "al dente", it was more like "broken dente". It was well undercooked and closer to raw then the proper texture - quite firm and chewy - not even close. Apparently, gluten-free pasta takes longer to cook as our friend then told us, but any chef worth his or her salt, especially in Italy, knows how to properly cook and taste pasta to ensure it has the proper consistency. This one obviously did not. We mentioned it to the server and then the owner who came over, but all they offered was to cook her a fresh "1/2 portion" of pasta (because we all had tasted it to see how bad it really was), but by that point the rest of us were almost done with our main courses and she refused. She left 3/4 of the pasta untouched as they removed it from the table. Any self-respecting restaurant would have taken it off the bill, offered her a free dessert or maybe an after dinner limoncello, but, to my surprise, none of those things happened - no "mi dispiace" (I'm sorry), nothing! The tall server/host, who was quite full of himself as he pranced around the room, then brought us the check in a small wooden treasure chest, an interesting novelty, but then told us "take it to the front and tell them table #12". Very odd that a restaurant in Italy of this caliber would make you go to the bar to pay, but I guess that is the way they do it here. Unimpressive, especially his hoity-toity attitude. What an ass. Had the pasta been properly cooked or had they reacted more professionally for their grievous mistake, I might have given them a decent 6 Bombs Out Of 10 (3 stars - an average rating for average food at slightly above average prices), but because they do not know how to properly cook pasta and do not have the business acumen to make up for a massive mistake such as that ... I was so excited to eat here! I was terribly disappointed when i did. First of all the owner was running around making her waitstaff nervous, disjointed and the whole place seemed scattered and distracted from her directions to them. I believe she was trying to help! But she wasn't and you could feel the bad energy in this restaurant. The food was mediocre at best. Vongole was good. The genovese con carne tasted like french onion soup without the cheese! So i had to ask for cheese as it needed some sort or salt element, and could of used a touch of acid squeeze of lemon, drop of vinegar! Just blah! The melanzane parmigiana had no parmesan, so i had to flag down the waiter to get my parmesan cheese back as he scooped it away when he cleared my first course??? Also had no fork, so waited patiently trying to flag someone down for a fork. Also Why cant you put parmesan on table to begin with and why did he take it away middle of my meal??? Super frustrated at this point. It was super cheap parmesan anyway! But the meal needed it sadly. The parmigiana was super greasy and tasted gross metallic flavor, hope i don't get aluminum poisoning ~ i ate a few bites, then could not eat any more. I had one glass of wine, and i would of liked another, my glass sat empty on the table for half of my meal without anyone including the the owner lady running around making her waitstaff weary, she did not even notice or ask??? My meal for one was $34 Euro what a joke, should of been $20 Euro at most. My glass of house red wine was $8 euro and it was 1/4 of a glass! This is italy, come on! This testaurant is NOT FANCY but they are charging fancy prices!! Restaurant around the corner " Il Pomodoro" gives you a huge glass of red wine, much better wine too for $4 euro and quality of their food is excellent. The one star is for the Vongole and because you need a star to post. The desert cart on my way out, looked like cheap cafe store bought dried out cakes~ No offer of espresso or limoncello for $34 euro either. Reviews are good here! I have no idea why??? This restaurant is a hidden gem. Based on its location, it is not easy to find normally. However, it locates in the middle of Napoli Molo Beverello and my hotel, which near Metro Dante, and it is suitable for landing from Capri or Ischia. First of all, they have English menu! For, two people, we ordered fried anchovies and cod, sautéed clams for starters, and risotto with seafood for main course. They all tasty and out of my expectation after several Italian cuisines in Naples. For dessert, we shared a chocolate cake with smashed almond, which is also good, not very sweet! I'm so surprised this restaurant doesn't have more reviews, but I take honor in being among the first. This place is wonderful. It feels very homey, while upscale at the same time. My meal was delicious. I ordered the pasta and potatoes with smoked provolone. It was tasty and very filling. I counted at least 4 different types of pasta in the bowl, which made sure it was a boring dish. I also got a mixed salad which was dressed with olive oil and another zesty flavoring I couldn't put my finger on. All in all, 5 stars. Excellence at a reasonable price. Ask for wine recommendations, they have several aglianico based wines that are well aged and easy to recommend. What a great find! So happy we found this place. Super genuine and classy place (without being stiff at all). They do classic Neapolitan dishes, which are served very elegantly and simply. Great service and such a nice atmosphere. We had the Mozzarella in Carrozza to start and then Pasta con Faglioli e Cozze, which made a perfect Sunday lunch. found this lovely restaurant here on yelp which was really close to our b&b. got there around 815pm for dinner and the place was already getting filled..as soon as we sat down , there were more people that showed up and occupied all the tables in the restaurant. the decor inside was nice. my friend and i ordered to share the clams, which was delicious but a tiny bit salty, the ragu con beef which was yummy and grilled vegetables that also very good. i would come back to try the octupus salad and maybe next time the deep fried anchovies. read more
