Hubby and I came to "Loca Moca Cafe," not because we were insane, but we were early for the nearby Brookfield Zoo opening. It's steps away from the BNSF Metra Brookfield stop. Most patrons are neighborhood residents. This place was quite busy for this Sunday morning for pre- post-church, dog-walking, and early-riser crowds. Coming from the city, I could tell this place wasn't one of those must-visit, or must-worship destination for a "coffee snob." It's just a down-to-earth local community coffee shop that serves good coffee. Their signature "Loco Moca latte" contained white chocolate and coconut. I could use some sweet add-ons in my coffee this morning to keep me energized in the zoo, so it worked for me. However, I was a fan of their blueberry and cinnamon chip scones. I don't personally have much connection to the Village of Brookfield, but hubby often requests the trip to the all-you-can-play arcade place on the opposite side of Brookfield Metra station. I had some time between appointments and thought that I'd find a spot with wifi to chillax and sip a beverage. Loca Moca Cafe seemed to fit the bill. Parking was easy across the street - even with copious amounts of snow. I came in, up a few steps, and into the cafe. It was cute and had an independent quality. I quickly determined that this was not a cookie cutter cafe and that my usual assumptions of standard beverages and WiFi might not be applicable here. The menu was pretty broad. There were chilled beverages in a refrigerated cooler, a few baked goods in the display case, and homemade greeting cards on the counter. I intentionally ordered many items to inflate my bill because I needed to pay with plastic. I didn't know if there was a minimum charge requirement for plastic or not but I got my bill to just over $10. I got a bottled water, chai, and green tea smoothie. The chai and green tea smoothie tasted as if they were made from powdered mixes. They were each made with such speed to lead me to that conclusion also. They were okay but I've definitely enjoyed tastier cafe beverages. I set up camp at a small table along the wall and turned on my computer. There weren't any unsecured networks nor did any network have a name applicable to Loca Moca Cafe Inc. Several minutes later I asked the owner if there was WiFi and she handed me a laminated card with the necessary information to get online. I don't know why she didn't suggest that to begin with when she saw me using my computer. I suppose that I'd return to Loca Moca Cafe Inc if I was in the neighborhood and had time to kill but I wouldn't make a special trip. read more

I absolutely love supporting local business! Especially cute little coffee shops like Loca Moca Cafe. I stopped in here in between meetings to get some work done. Decided to order the Loca Moca Latte for my afternoon pick-me-up. It wasn't anything too fancy, but definitely delish! Plus it got the job done. I was perked up and able to work onward. There was one other couple in the cafe while I was there. This was nice because it was quiet and easy to focus on my work. However, a little ambience music would have been appreciated so it wasn't so silent. The girl behind the counter was super nice and very helpful. Loca Moca is in a great location too! This place is great for getting a yummy little something to keep you warm on your train-ride. Also, the name is adorable. The interior is cozy and hip and they sell cute little things like cards and home-made goodies from the community. I like that a lot. I will say, however, if you're in a hurry, this is not the best place to go. There's only one worker (or at least while I was there) and she works kind of slowly. The drinks were also not the most delicious things I've ever had by a long shot. I got the mint latte, and my boyfriend got the candy bar latte. They were yummy and definitely kept us comfy on the train. They were a teensy bit overpriced though. Overall, I love Starbucks and Caribou, but I am always proud and happy to support a non-chain business at any chance I can get. Keep it up Locha Mocha! You guys are great! : ) read more

This cafe is not closed! Loca Mocha Cafe has relocated across the street from its original destination, it is now located at the Brookfield Metra Train Stop. I really enjoy this cute little spot, before it was a little bit bigger than a whole in the wall now it's in a spacious train stop. The ambiance is great, plenty of seating, don't know about the WiFi though. Today I ordered a Matcha Latte with almond milk substitute. The cup was VERY HOT even with the cardboard sleeve on it & I also had to wait like 15 minutes for it to cool off, even then I still burned my tongue! It was good, I had the drink last winter with a different milk substitute, I think it was soy milk, and it tasted better. Nonetheless, my service was great and everyone around me had a cup of coffee and a smile. Thanks! read more

Great place to get some coffee and a snack before getting on the train. I got a plain ole boring iced coffee on my first trip here, and it was decent. They had 3 people working when I went in, so they're ready to handle a morning rush. I was the only one in the store, though, and felt a lot of eyes on me, so I didn't spend too much time reading the menu. There are far too few independent coffee shops in the western suburbs, so I was very happy when Loca Mocha opened in Brookfield. Very cute place, but I have two issues with it: 1. The silence. I have been there at least five times and each time it was dead silent in there. When I went with a girlfriend to catch up we felt like we weren't able to talk at all lest we disturb other patrons or have our conversation overheard. Please consider some light ambient music. 2. The hours: Maybe night time isn't prime coffee drinking hours, but as a teacher and a grad student, I would happily go there at night to grade or work on papers, but alas, they close early. Neither of these issues are deal breakers, I'll will still go back, alone and in the afternoon. read more

I was not too enthused by the few times I have chosen to stop by at Loca Moca. When I go to a coffee shop, I'm usually there to stay for an afternoon as I work on work. I feel like I'm being generous with the three stars, but I bumped it up a bit because I really enjoy supporting local businesses and it was generally an A-OK experience. The service was pretty neutral. The woman who rang me up wasn't particularly friendly. It seemed like she was just conducting business as usual. She talked with another worker in Spanish most of the time. My food was a little bit pricey for the location (these are prices I would expect from Intelligentsia in the city, not in small town Brookfield), but I was willing to pay to spend the day there working on my laptop. Then, I was informed that there was a minimum for me to use my card. I did not see that on any signs anywhere. She rang me up just for the drink without meeting the minimum, which was nice, but she also kind of visibly not thrilled about doing so. Really, I would have been fine meeting the minimum (though maybe a little grumbling) if the service had been really great, but it wasn't. I wasn't made to feel welcome. I was disappointed that there were no wireless networks to be found. Finally, I asked and I was given a laminated card with a username and password. I think there might have even been a limit on how long I could use the internet. Then, it closed early at 3 PM. Yikes. Loca Moca isn't my favorite place in the area, but it got the job done. read more

Tried to grab breakfast and coffee during the morning mid-week, and definitely won't be going back. They were almost out of light roast but managed to pump enough for a cup, while the boyfriend had a similar experience with the dark roast. The several employees were clustered in a corner not-caring. We decided not to eat-in because the bagel wasn't good and we wanted to go home and throw an egg and cheese on it to save it. Thought, okay, let's get a paper on the way out, but the cashier wouldn't put a paper on our debit cards because there was a "five dollar minimum"...nevermind the purchase we had just made minutes before. Meanwhile, the newest customer was fighting with the coffee machines as we did, which were spluttering out not-enough of anything. He only had to wait ten minutes for a cup, our cashier said. The capper was that the coffee just plain wasn't good. Both the light roast and dark roast were just mostly-consumed, we didn't like the bagel, the service was bad. Why go here? read more

Great one-off coffee shop across from Brookfield Metra. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, but also offers a (mostly) quiet place to enjoy a great coffee, decamp and talk, do emails, etc. The shop co-owner, Maria, is a gem - quick, friendly, and consummate host. She is close to her many regular clients, judging from the pleasant well-acquainted banter that she keeps up with great poise; she makes the experience go from good to great. There is a nice variety of seating options, including tables and chairs for the "lean-in" meeting, and more relaxed upholstered seating. There is even an area reserved for community announcements and local businesspeople, which I always appreciate, being one myself. Quick brewed coffee service and nice selection of treats to go along with your drink. There is plenty of seating inside and the staff is very friendly. If you order an espresso drink or smoothie, your wait time will be a little longer than a larger Coffee House's. I like that the coffee is self-serve. There are usually 3-4 different types of brewed coffee available for you to choose from. They even have a small section of artists' merchandise for sale (jewelry, cards, etc). I recommend grabbing a coffee from Loca Moca before you get on the next train outta Brookfield. read more

This place was recommended by a new neighbor when we moved to Brookfield. About six months later we finally got around to trying it. I'm a tea person and while they have tea it's all bagged (not my bag, if you will) so if you're a tea person you'll probably be disappointed. They have a nice selection of specialty coffee drinks though and my husband hasn't had a bad one yet. He also likes their brewed coffee which is self serve in the front. I get the steamer with a variety of different flavors and will hopefully try the chai soon. Love the pastries too. The red velvet muffin is amazing and their croissants are flaky and delicious. It's become our regular stop on the weekend for a treat. Service can be a bit on the slow side, but it's always friendly. read more

This is a great place to get coffee or tea, along with some something for a light breakfast. The people are attentive and pleasant. The place is clean and pleasantly decorated. The coffee here is tasty, far better than what you get at the Starbucks (in my opinion). Prices are about 20% less than Starbucks, give or take. They have a card-punching feature where you get a free medium drink after eight purchases. Loca Moca is located across the street from the BNSF train station and caters to people commuting to work. It is possible for someone to come in, get their coffee, pay, and be out the door within a minute. The atmosphere is pleasant. I often go there with my laptop, sit and piddle around for hours over a latte or two. Or three... My only gripe - a very mild one - is that they have a small selection of food for breakfast. It's bagels, muffins, cookies, and little else. It makes sense that they keep their selection small, since that way there is less waste. Still, there are times when a bagel just isn't enough. I grew up 2 blocks from this coffee shop, and I'm glad someone finally figured out that the brookfield train station needs their caffeine too. I mean, ideally the shop would be on the other side of the road, but hey, whatareyougonnado? I've been here many times, most notably the summer after I moved back in with my parents after the Peace Corps and would come here to practice my Spanish with the owner and some of the other employees. In general everyone is quite nice, and the drinks are pretty good. They always have a few different blends which are fun to try, like the hazelnut or the el salvadorian. My favorite part about the shop is that it's a great place to come in and get some work done in a relaxed environment during the day. In the early morning it's definitely more of a get-your-coffee-to-go type of establishment. All in all, a definite check out if you are in the area and are in need of a pick-me-up. read more

I used to frequent Loca Moca with several of my friends, as we all had weekly appointments in the area and it was the only coffee shop around. We stopped going there after several encounters with the staff. The staff, who is mostly Spanish-speaking, would talk about us in Spanish. One of my friends understood the language and told us that she was complaining about how we never wanted to buy anything and just wanted to hang out. This is simply not true. I made a purchase every time I came into the shop - and, it was at least five dollars each week because of the credit card limit that they have. Each time my friends and I went into the shop, the woman behind the counter would immediately be pushing us to order something. This is no way to treat regular customers. I am never going back there again after the way we were treated. Also, side note: they don't usually have music playing in the background, which just kind of puts me off. read more

It's cute that they have lots of fliers for local places and events and goings-on around the neighborhood. Coffee, smoothies, and some bakery items are available. My kids like their large sugar cookies, but they're over $3 each! My daughter wanted a cookie and a smoothie the other day, and it cost nearly $10, so I skipped getting anything for myself. The stuff here's okay, but it's overpriced, so we don't go there much. The shop is small, so I wouldn't recommend that people sit there for hours taking up their seats, unless it's REALLY slow right then. read more
