    u-pick blueberries

our family loves coming to pick blueberries here! we came in 2023 and it was so fun. in 2024 we learned the hard way that weather can affect the crop! i didn't remember to look them up until early july and learned that all the heat waves fried the crop and they had to close early. makes sense. so plan ahead and visit in june whenever possible, or whenever they open. we went again today and enjoyed it so much. see you next year!

Alpine Blue not only allowed dogs, but had their resident farm dog sitting on the passenger side of one of the carts going up and down the dirt road. This local farm also beats others in prices! At the end of May, only cherries and blueberries were available to pick and everything was $4 per lb except the yellow cherries which were $4.50/lb. What a steal with today's inflation! The 1st farm we went to was way more than this. I like that this farm is widely open and you can explore anywhere you'd like. There were so many variety of cherry trees to choose from and I was surprised how large of an area there was for the blueberries. Not sure if we missed where the ladders were, but some folks near us had one. The place is clean and well maintained. Some paths were full and lush with grass. There were families just chilling and having a picnic in the orchard. Another plus is that it wasn't crowded like some of the other farms; we hardly saw anyone while exploring. They even offer rides up or down the road. All the workers there were so friendly. The sprinklers were on at the time we went, which made it fun dodging water and helped cool us off in the near-90° heat. There were portable washing stations and potties, and a sink by the check-out in case you want to wash your hands or fruit before bringing home. Overall, a great relaxing experience. Huge orchards, unbeatable prices, fresh fruit, and dogs allowed!

Later on, we found out that section was already out of season. As we walked farther, we finally saw much better cherries, but most of the good ones were way too high to reach and there were no ladders available. There were some lower branches, but the cherries there were not great in quality, so we ended up picking only around 3 lbs. We then decided to switch to the peach and nectarine area hoping for a better experience, but unfortunately there was barely anything good to pick. Most of the fruits were either overripe, damaged, or already picked over. Overall, it felt like the farm should have better guidance on which sections are still worth visiting before customers pay and spend time walking around in the heat. The staff was fine, but the overall fruit quality and picking experience were disappointing for us this visit.

Well being truthful even some as we picked....The orchard is beautiful, the staff is always friendly, and the experience has become one of our favorite family traditions. In a world where so many places change over time, it's honestly amazing to have a spot that stays consistently wonderful year after year. Thank you for a decade of memories, sticky fingers, full buckets, and happy hearts. Already counting down until next cherry season! Now to pit them and make a fresh cherry pie..... $4.50/pound

If you want Raniers you'll need to go across the street to the Lopez Farm (which used to be owned by DC). The first reviewer for this place wrote a great review and had good advice on what to bring and do, so be sure to read it. The only other thing I would add is I would also bring: 1) scissors- you don't have to have them but it's easier on the hands 2) bug spray- there are bugs out there and I got bit today! 3) hand sanitizer, since your hands will get dirty I found that the rows which were furthest back and the trees in the middle tended to have the best fruit. Probably varies each season but that's how it was for us during this visit. They don't have ladders but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to bring a light plastic stool. Not all of us are six feet tall!

This year though, I had a google calendar reminder setup and I was prepared to go! Memorial day weekend seemed to be busiest so we went the week after. The memorial day crowd must have raped those trees as most of the low hanging fruit was gone. Even though you are not supposed to, we ended up standing on our buckets to get the Rainer variety. The black tart was completely gone but there was plenty of bing to go around. The season is super short and overheard that they may only have one more weekend and then close up! Only cherries here, have to drive around the rest of Brentwood for other fruits and veggies! Not much shade and dusty parking lot. (That's probably typical!)

This gave me peace knowing that I will still have fruits to pick/won't get stopped at the entrance even if I sleep in on the u-pick days. It also lets me know they actively maintain their site, which I really do appreciate. They really got all the stuff/process together. Very well organized. You can add the QR code to digital wallet for easy access. The entrance fee serves as a coupon for the fruits. The staffs were also very helpful. They gave us tips on what to look for when picking white peaches (it was our first time u picking the peaches), and they recommended that we try out the fruit while we were there too. I love that they were open about fruit tasting. This farm was also the first u-pick place with the most variety of fruits (white peach, 2 types of apricots, ollaliberry/blackberry, and cherries) to pick from on the same day.

My daughter and I found what looked to be an unpicked cherry tree and went to work. It didn't take long for us to gather a bounty of cherries, and there was tons of low hanging fruit that was super easy for a petite seven-year-old to reach. Special thanks to the Freitas staff member who told us to pick dark cherries. The bright red ones look appealing but they need more time on the tree! We took home seven pounds of cherries. They were $4/pound and they take cash or credit cards. I checked their website before heading here (and recommend you do too!). We'll definitely be back to Freitas.

There was no signage indicating price/pound, and they give you a plastic bag to carry your cherries. When we got into the orchard, we noticed that most of the trees had been either picked clean or had berries that were rotten or too small/not ripe yet. We intentionally walked much further in to see if we could find some trees that hadn't been picked as much, but the orchard wasn't in great shape. We struggled to find cherries we actually wanted to pick, and we tripped a few times on the uneven dirt, weeds, and tubes running throughout. When we left, we weighed our cherries and confirmed they were $4/lb. Freitas also doesn't take credit card, so we had to pay with either cash or Venmo. We've previously been to The Cherry Pit and far preferred our experience there. The Cherry Pit had parking closer to the entrance, clear signage indicating price/lb, lots of high quality trees and ample cherries to pick, and accepts credit cards. The Cherry Pit also didn't ask us to sign a waiver before entering.
