Life Lesson Hints for those people who have never yet suffered the loss of a loved one (all 50 states): Make a plan in advance and WORK YOUR PLAN. If you FAIL to plan this, your heirs will get skinned alive racing to buy this and hire that at the last minute. Kiss an extra $10-20 Grand goodbye for last minute arrangements. Choose an HONEST, COMPETENT executor. If you implicitly distrust your intended heirs, consider a NON-heir. Heirs are notorious for ripping each other off. Acquire the primary assets necessary BEFORE you need them (eg. a burial plot). If a coffin will be appropriate for the service, Costco is the current low price leader. (I know, it sounds irreverent and crass. I'm sorry.) Know the cost of your monument and make sure your monument idea conforms to the cemetery park rules. Know your exact arrangements to the detail and the expected costs. DOUBLE that number, maybe triple it. Place the money in an interest bearing checking account or an investment account with checking privileges for YOUR EXECUTOR with HIS or HER name on the account. Your account (or credit line) MUST be immediately liquid or it won't do you any good. Pay on Demise accounts will NOT be liquid. They take a long time to clear. Your executor's name must be on the account OR they must be able to finance the arrangement and charge the estate afterwards. If you have sufficient assets OR minor children OR very young adult children, consult an estate planning attorney. If you lack assets, ask an attorney *anyway.* Your local law school has student clinics which can help with very simple trusts and wills. Please note that there is ONE fee to plan the estate and a DIFFERENT fee to administer it. (Didn't see that one coming, did you? Grab yer wallet!) Consider a "No Contest" clause to prevent heirs from suing each other and dissipating the estate. Set aside money for post mortem pathology. This will help your lawyer or heirs' lawyer identify actionable torts such as Medical Malpractice, Product Liability, Causation of injury, Nursing Home Abuse, etc. Don't embalm until AFTER the autopsy is complete. And move FAST- as fast as possible after demise. This last one bit me one time back in the 70s and I never forgot my lesson: Our family wasn't on the ball and it made the difference between proving First Degree Murder and MAYBE Involuntary Manslaughter. Without Pathology which would have PROVED murder, instead of spending well under a thousand for pathology and seeing justice, we spent over $10 thousand on private investigators. Without Pathology, the evidence was so lacking that the Coroner's Inquest couldn't reasonably find criminality, hence no Grand Jury, no charges, not even Misdemeanor Vehicular Manslaughter- Nothing, Zip, Zero, Nada. We did this one to ourselves and the perps went skipping away Scot Free (wincing). Many religious traditions dictate burial or disposition as soon as possible. Get on the ball and move fast. If your executor knows your plan and gets in gear, it will save all manner of grief. Are you planning to donate organs or tissue to help others survive, or to benefit science? Make sure your family KNOWS your plan and won't gum up the works fighting and fussing. Do you have a religious point of view? Make sure your Rabbi or Minister is set up in advance, with funds set aside for their Honorarium. (Every Cleric is different. Some are free. Most are not. Ask in advance.) Ask your Rabbi or Minister if the Temple/Church has cemetery property available in advance (pre-need). They helped my mom through her anxiety of parting with years of accumulation of things, by providing caring, emotional support as she downsized to a 870 sq ft apartment. The Caring Transitions team eased her stress by helping her identify what would fit in the smaller space and then carefully packing those items. Joe arranged for movers to take everything to her new apartment. Before my mom arrived at her new apartment, Heidi, the lead for the job, had unpacked everything, even hanging family photos on the apartment walls, decorating it with care and love. She created a moment like that which you'd see on a home makeover TV show; I had to hold back tears as my mom and I walked into her new apartment, decorated to feel as much like her previous home as possible. Every piece of furniture, jewelry, household item, and antique sold was cataloged, professionally photographed for the sale and accounted for with impeccable documentation. Joe's contract clearly states what Caring Transitions is going to do, how the process works, and, most importantly, what it costs. Joe made sure we understood what services we were getting from Caring Transitions and how the auctions were to contribute toward the costs of the mammoth clean out of the home. Joe prepared us for these costs, gave us a reality check - setting a realistic expectation for the prices we may get for beloved antiques in an auction and helped us mitigate the expenses. He was open and honest in all concerns. Though not every item sold for the price we had hoped, there were no financial surprises and definitely no ethical concerns. On 8/20, my husband stopped by our unoccupied home to discover that the door had been left unlocked by Mike. Our realtor had left a lock box with our key and provided Mike with the access code to unlock and lock our door. This means our home was left unlocked, while unoccupied to 2 full days. Upon discussion, our realtor contacted Mike to discuss our displeasure with the way services were completed without a quote agreement and that our front door to our home was left unlocked. We felt that we should have been offered some sort of price reduction off of the cost of the services completed without our consent and for our home being left unsecured.
