Loving my new solar pool heater…read more Everything went super smooth from the sales process to the installation. After doing some research I found out that there are really two major solar pool heating companies in the area. I scheduled to get estimates from both of them. Jim, from Solar Source, showed up wearing a mask. I thought that every responsible adult would show up wearing one, but that's not the case as I'll write about later. Jim was great. He gave me all the information, including that they have a 10 year warranty that includes all parts and labor. He told me that they are the only ones who do this, so it will cost nothing if anything ever breaks. After the 10 years, it is 50% covered, so I'm still getting a deal then. He showed me an example of the solar panel. The one they have drills fewer holes into your roof. Jim also showed me the device that allows you to set your pool to whatever temperature you want. Since I was doing all of this in September, they had a deal where you get one panel for free, which saved me about $500. In the end my total was a little over $4,500 (which surprisingly is on par with electric heaters, which I thought would be less). In comparison, the other solar rep showed up not wearing a mask. He told me that their warranty also includes parts and labor, but when I called back later, I found out you still have to pay a certain amount every time someone comes out (so it's not completely free). The other rep also didn't listen to me and ended up quoting me an electric pump, whereas I wanted solar. You really realize how great one company is when you have another one for comparison! After signing with Solar Source they set up a time to come by and survey the house and another time after that for the installation. Everyone I dealt with was awesome. They have people dedicated just to calling and scheduling these appointments and I found everyone showed up exactly when they said they would (which is not always the case with contractors). The guys who did the installation were super friendly. When they came down to show me how to set the temperature, they put on masks. Again, I've come to really appreciate people who do this, since I've found it is not the norm. It started raining the day they did the installation so they said they'd come back the next day to finish...and they did! I've had a lot of stuff done to the house during this pandemic and I can tell you that a majority of people who say they will be back at a certain time, do not come back. They didn't charge me until all the work was done. Now it's October and our pool is a toasty 90 degrees (at my husband's request). I'm already patting myself on the back for making this purchase.

I talked to both owners, Christina and Jared, because they both came to my house at different times during the installation, and I'm an inquisitive and demanding customer (Warren Buffet was my neighbor back in Omaha) ... you make me happy, you're the best at what you do! I even offered to buy a percentage of the company, but they turned me down saying, "This is our life's work. We love what we do." They killed the competition. SunPro/ADT ($45k) was almost 50% higher than the price of Bay Area Solar ($31,776). A third less memorable competitor was 20% more and far less professional and friendly. Installation was fast and professional. I've been researching solar panels for 30 years so I knew what I was getting, and I got the best bang for the buck. No money down, $8261 Federal Tax Credit, $160 a month for 20 years, written guarantee that all my panels will produce 95% of what they produce the first day of installation, or Bay Area Solar will replace them for free. My bill with Duke has consistently been the minimum $35.96, with a few winter months around $60 due to more cloudy days and angle of the sun. My neighborhood was built in 1978, and my neighbors consistently pay $300, $400, and sometimes $500 a month. He did such a thorough job cleaning them and gave us lots of before and after photos. Also throughout his visit he provided a lot of useful information about solar technology in general (as he is a former solar panel installer himself). After he was finished cleaning the panels we checked the inverter and the output was up by more than 20%! We will definitely get Solar Suds back to clean the panels more regularly in the future.

That has been our only monthly cost from April to August, and sometimes March to September. For October to March, our lowest electric bill has been an additional $15, and our highest electric bill has been an additional $52 (during a cold month when we needed heat). Before solar, our energy bills averaged $100 a month. We are definitely saving money! We were pleased with SEM's installation process, and we continue to be impressed with their ability to troubleshoot minor problems over the phone or in person since the installation. They helped us get the best price on the panels, and we did receive credit on our 2014 income taxes. We are glad that we have the panels, and we are very happy that SEM was our provider. We highly recommend them!

For years I am happy with my decision to go solar. Today, 20 May 2026, sadly I am informed that SEM is no longer in business... don't know the reason and don't know when that happened. I would give them five stars for installation, but can't because they don't exist, I am left disappointed and will award SEM a single star because they were dishonest about notification and the promise of deinstalling/reinstalling my panels for free, one time when the roof is reshingled. Now to find a reliable replacement company.
