Today was the first time I tried this restaurant and wow I was impressed. I ordered for pick up and the food ready quick but not too quick. When I arrived the man working was extremely nice and accommodating. The ambiance was a cozy little tucked away cafe which would be nice for a date night. I ordered the panung curry spicy and the Geis Frie roll and wow both were excellent! The food tasted amazing and fresh. I will deff be back and ordering often. For the one of the few Thai spots around, it's a pretty good choice and fair on prices. I chose the shrimp pad Thai - while good, there wasn't a ton of flavor, which I feel like Thai food always has a ton of, so that was a little odd to me. Atmosphere - Dinner was takeout so I will not be rating this experience.  The signage is small on the front of the large downtown building.  The building is a multi-use space on the first floor.  Enter the center doors on Main Street and follow the long hallway inside, the entire time walking, the dining area is just on the other side of the right wall.  Take a peak into the windows of the restaurants. Food Appetizer - We started with Thai Spring Rolls.  6 small under filled rolls that were over cooked by 30 seconds to a minute.  The taste of fillings where overwhelmed by the wrapper.  The dipping sauce was nothing special, a sweet orange sauce. My Dinner- I love trying new things, today I ordered the Pad Thai Woon Sen with Beef.  Which translate to stir-fried vermicelli, which sounds delicious.  My meal was not so delicious.  The noodles in my dish were broken to the point the longest pieces where an inch long.  The noodles were over cooked, all those short noodles stuck together.  The beef was dry and tough even in the sauce.  The beef pieces were large and should have been cut at least half the size. My Wife's Dinner - She loves fried rice, and decided on the Little Blue Elephant Fried Rice.  This is their top end fried rice, which includes shrimps, chicken, calamari, pineapple, bell peppers, onion, carrots, peas, cashews, raisins, and eggs.  Looking at my picture I can not see the peppers or peas within the rice.  My wife indicated that the amount of shrimp was not worth extra price of this rice dish, fifteen dollars.  I tried the rice, and it reminded me more of Spanish rice than Thai rice.  There was no little cubed carrot bites, and no peas in my bite. Service - I placed the order by phone.  I asked if they cold make the fried rice gluten free.  The person I had be speaking with pulled the phone away from his mouth and yelled to the kitchen.  I heard the answer back from the kitchen and the person on the phone I was talking to a second later.  It is not that hard to make fried rice gluten free, simply replace the soy sauce with an alternative, most people could not tell the difference.  When I walked in I was greeted immediately, with a question, "table for one?"  No, then a series of other questions flew without me having a chance to answer.  Another gentlemen came out and indicated to both of us that he would help me.  We walked to register where he found my food ready to go, there was also another bag ready for someone else.  Paid with a credit card and off I went on my way home. Future - I think they broke me on trying other ethnic foods in Minot area.  So probably not with a score of two. read more

Love so much of the food here. The sushi is great!!! And we also love staple Thai dishes here, including massaman curry. I really find the Siam tenders incredible. One noteworthy thing here is they actually give you a great portion of veggies in your food. Most Asian restaurants have the number of peas you can count on one hand in a dish but not here! Only drawback is that sometimes they are pretty slow to fill orders and the building it's located in smells weird. Both are worth the wait and scent though! They deliver but it's also easy to call in a pickup order. The owner is always so kind! read more

I'm a Little Blue Elephant regular. The owner (Kenny) knows the names of everyone in my family and even brings us free appetizers sometimes! The food is amazing. If I am going to spend money eating out, I want the food to be worth it. LBE serves traditional Thai food that's always full of flavor. They also have a really good sushi chef! I've never had a bad sushi roll there. It's definitely worth trying out -- I promise you will be more than satisfied with your food. There are few ways they could improve: -They should pay closer attention to their customers. When they are busy, I feel sort of ignored. It takes a while for them to come get my order, and I have to wave them down from across the restaurant when I want my water refilled. Sometimes the service is great, and sometimes it isn't. -The spice level fluctuates depending on who's in the kitchen. -You have to pay at the counter when you're finished with your meal. This isn't a problem, but first timers might end up sitting for quite a while before realizing they're supposed to go up to the front to pay. -The location isn't the prettiest. I know there isn't much they can do about this except move locations, but it factors into the ambience of the restaurant. At least they have pretty cool decorations! Although there are a few things they could improve, the food is enough to keep me coming back regularly!! Some recommendations: Sleeping beauty, yakisoba, pad thai, cashew nut. Friendly service, but repeatedly have some issues with our food. We used to go here a couple years ago and I would always get avocado sushi, and let the staff know that I'm vegan. Multiple times, there were fish eggs on the sushi and I would let them know and they would say "no its just sesame seeds" when clearly the bright red and orange circles were fish eggs, not the black and tan actual sesame seeds... I work at a sushi restaurant, so I know that if they had just wiped their cutting board, there wouldn't be cross contamination. Anyways, moving on to today's experience. We decided to try their food again and called in an order for chicken drunken noodle mild spiciness and my order of yellow curry with tofu. A couple times I asked them to make sure the curry was vegan/vegetarian, and even asked if there was fish sauce. The employee taking my order said "no fish sauce and we use coconut milk so it will be vegetarian". Great! I picked up the food, the staff were kind, and we drove off. We should've checked before leaving though, because when we got home i poured my curry into a bowl to discover that it was chicken in my curry! There was zero tofu, just many pieces of chicken. I even picked out a couple pieces and tore them to make sure that it was in fact chicken. No tofu tears and looks like that and my mom ate the piece and confirmed it to be chicken. Very disappointing :( I just ended up cooking my own dinner and took the loss since we live an hour away, and ate the side of jasmine rice, which seemed to be quite a small portion. Sidenote: my mom usually orders that same drunken noodle dish everytime with the same level of spiciness, but today she said it was extremely spicy and she started feeling nauseas, and then threw up immediately after finishing her food. I went in on a recommendation. I ordered a usual Thai dish: Pad Se Ew with an open mind. I recently moved from Korea and I understand most Asian food in the area may be more American biased when it came to the Fusion scale but I don't think any increment on that scale would find a burnt taste to be deicious. The service was spectacular and the people very friendly, but the Pad Se Ew did, not only not have fat noodles, but also had a burnt taste to it as well. I'm still looking forward to trying more of their other dishes. I am particularly excited about their roast duck dishes. I was pleasantly surprised to see that a place like Minot, North Dakota would ha w any sort of roasted duck option. :) read more

Definitely a little hard to find. It's inside a building complex. The food I'd ordered was very tasty and very flavorful. I had the tum yum soup and also sweet and sour tofu. The portion was a good size. You can judge an Asian restaurant by the quality of the rice. It was cooked perfectly, very moist. Just one server for 4 table and working takeout/cashier the night I went. Needless to say service was a little slow. That's why I didn't give 5 stars. Been waiting to try this place out since August but they were at the fair grounds so they were closed for quite some time then I just ended up getting too busy to stop by. When we went in today at 3pm we we waited a bit to be seated which I found it a bit odd since there was only one other couple there. Once we sat down the other couple left so it was just us. The place is nice and spacious and it has a nice feel to it since it was decorated with a lot of plants and elephants. I ordered the yellow curry with chicken while my husband had pho (dude I don't even know how a Vietnamese dish ended up in a Thai restaurant). I tasted his broth a bit and it's very herby, wish it had so much more sodium since that's what I'm used to in my Pho lol salt and msg! The meat was thicker than what most places would've given and the waiter asked if bean sprouts were ok for us. My husband said yes, but we realized there wasn't any half way through finishing his dish. But he didn't mind it. The yellow curry brought back many memories from my childhood since I love curry and it tasted just the way most places back home would make it. Only thing I'd change is that the potatoes in the curry needed to be cooked longer. Super hard and the bigger pieces was almost raw right in the center. Aside from have Pho, they also have sushi too so I'm guessing if you ever feel like Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese all at once this is where to go. It sucks to hear that business isn't doing well for them. When they were on base, I heard they were really busy. I only hope that the fair a few months ago was kind to them. I'd definitely go back for the curry, I miss all the food that I left behind when I left Hawaii. Best Thai food in Minot Atmosphere: Tables were spaced nicely. Nothing really notable about the atmosphere. Clean. Service: Satisfactory, not great but ok. My water was refilled once, but no one asked how my meal was after it was served. Food: It was really good and a breath of fresh air as far as Asian food goes in Minot. I had the Spicy Bamboo which was everything that is great about Thai food. Flavorful and spicy. Could of had a little more meat and rice, but was still really delicious. The amount was fair, but of course being a 6' 200lbs male, I could have eaten more. My friend had the Super Sushi bowl and loved it. He said it was the best Sushi in town. This is coming from a guy who always, if not only, eats sushi at Asian restaurants. The selection of food was fantastic. They offer sushi, noodles dishes, soups, goose and duck, rice dishes, and more that I can not remember. The prices are mostly in the $12 range. The goose, duck, and sushi can get pretty expensive, over $20. Would I go back? Yes, I plan on it. Going to be one of my favs. read more

When they opened up their restaurant downtown, the food taste the same, if not, better. I still pick this restaurant whenever I want Thai food. I would definitely recommend everyone here. Not what I expected. I heard great things of this place and was disappointed. The fresh rolls were a joke. It looked like one roll cut into super small pieces. There was a tiny piece of shrimp with way too much rice noodles, lettuce, and mint. The balance wasn't right and where was the cilantro? Pad Thai noodles were greasy and Uber fish sauced up. Flavor wasn't right either. I ordered a garlic and pepper beef plate. There wasn't much beef but the flavor was good...a bit too garlicky after a while. I guess for North Dakota, this is what it is. For the price, it wasn't worth it. I'll make my own Thai food. Service was good but that's to be expected. Well, maybe I'll have to try it again later. read more

Ok I had the masaman curry Thai hot and my husband had Tom yum soup and pad wun sen. First his chicken soup wAs shrimp by accident I assume and smelled like fish sauce with floating mushrooms and he didn't try that. His pad wun sen tasted like pad Thai. Had very minimal veggies like 5 lol. It wasn't bad to taste but wasn't great just a bit meh. I got the curry Thai hot and he got his hot. Now, the masaman was 750 times hotter than a Thai chili. It was savage. Like I felt my insides burning while eating it and after 5 bites I lost all taste of the food completely. My husbands was hot and was brutally hot. We sat for 5 minutes before our server came to to take our drink order. When we ordered a Blue Moon beer off the menu she said they didn't have it. Generally the food was alright, but overpriced. I had a spicy tuna roll and it tasted very "fishy". I would have sent it back if the server came by to check on us. When we tried to cash out at the end of the meal the owner took way to long to ring us up and didn't have our ticket. We had to tell him what we ordered. One of my favorite places in the city. They do a deep fried sushi roll that is to die for. I've started and stopped writing a review for this place several times simply because I can't find the right words to sum up just how much I really like the food here. So I'll keep it simple: explore the menu. I've liked everything I've gotten here and it's pretty much a weekly visit for us now. This is the freshest sushi I've had in town, with a very good variety. The rest of the menu has a range of traditional Thai food. Anything can be ordered mild, medium, hot and Thai hot. I generally stick with medium and it's on the high end of what I can handle for spicy/hot. I want to list you some of my favorite dishes, but I think I'd end up copying out half the menu. They have a very small but friendly staff. Anyway, give this place a shot. It's kind of a hole in the wall lost in an old downtown building, but they manage to put out some really good food. *EDIT: November 2016, It's been almost two years since we started going here and it's still just as good. It has been way too long since the last time I had some pho. it was the most mediocre pho I have ever had in my life. It doesn't even taste like pho, and the meat tasted so old. Maybe it was my fault for getting a Vietnamese dish at a Thai restaurant, so I went ahead and got the pad thai. Again, the most mediocre pad thai ever. It was so bland I couldn't believe it. I still can't comprehend even till this day on how bad the food was. I can't say much about the other food on the menu since I haven't tried it, but the pho and pad thai, don't get it. I used to get food from the their food truck when it was on base. I usually got pad see ew or pad thai. Both were good but the prices were a little high. Ate at their restaurant recently and the food was still good (same prices). The service was a little slow even though there were only 2 or 3 tables. After we ate, I wasn't sure if we wait for a check or just go to the cashier. We ended up just going to the cashier. In the future I'll just order carry-out. read more

Saying that Minot, perhaps North Dakota in general, has a serious deficiency in its options for cuisine with ethnic authenticity, may be a stereotyped generalization, but likely hits closer to the truth than many locals would like to admit. So while pondering the significance of Thai Food, I stumbled across the following, which I think is a pretty accurate description of what one should base their expectations on. In his book "The Principles of Thai Cookery," renowned celebrity chef, writer and authority on Thai cuisine McDang wrote: "What is Thai food?... It reflects its culture, environment, ingenuity and values. In the case of Thailand, these words come to mind: intricacy; attention to detail; texture; color; taste...as well as good flavor....We not only pay attention to how a dish tastes: we are also concerned about how it looks, how it smells, and how it fits in with the rest of the meal. We think of all parts of the meal as a whole - sum rap Thai (the way Thais eat.)" Taking all that into consideration, along with a long personal history of enjoying truly traditional Thai cuisine, in both restaurants (coast to coast) and the homes of Thai friends, I will have to say that my experiences at Little Blue Elephant have yet to come close to, "...sum rap Thai." However, that being said, when dining in Minot, one should keep in mind the old cliche about: location! Location! LOCATION! It would seem that, like other restaurants in Minot that offer culinary diversity, Little Blue Elephant has also set it's menu's aim at targeting a distinctly "American" palate as well as ignoring the importance of focusing on offering strictly Thai cuisine. But take heart my fellow "adventurers of the plate," the experience at Little Blue Elephant is not entirely without merit! There are only two options for Thai food in Minot. (Little Blue Elephant and Baan Rao,) and between the two of them, your best bet would be Little Blue Elephant. Little Blue Elephant is a strange little oasis set deep inside a building in the slowly culturally evolving area of downtown Minot. (Be prepared to circle the block in search of parking on the weekends - a problem further exacerbated by all the road and building construction that seems to be without end.) The menu conjures the expectation of greatness but to say it delivers on these expectations would be misleading. If you are setting your hopes too high, you are destined to be disappointed. However, if you take into consideration that this little oasis is found in Minot and all that implies, then you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. Little Blue Elephant offers Minotians and visitors a semblance of Thai food with more of a Asian-fusion influence (think Thai meets Vietnamese meets Japanese meets Chinese,) for a price that will leave you scratching your head. Like all my dining experiences, I always take into consideration every possible facet - sometimes to the point of sympathy. (If you get a chance, skim the background story found in the local Minot Daily News from a few years ago.) So where do we begin? The service, like the food, is somewhat inconsistent. With the service, sometimes you are doted upon, other times practically ignored or forgotten (albeit in a friendly sort of way.) With the food, sometimes the dishes are prepared with surprising inspiration, other times you'll wish you had just stayed home. Presentation does not seem to be a priority for anything I have ever ordered here (which even to my own surprise has been more than I want to admit,) but if you accept not to judge a book by the cover, you might be surprised by some of the dishes and appetizers... like the Satay, Spring Rolls, Beef Salad, Drunken Noodles, Curry (red, green or yellow,) Sweet Sixteen, even the Pad Thai - which, depending on the day, might leave your palate a little confused. If you want to make it more authentic be sure to request it to be spicy (and trust me, if you are used to spicy dishes it will still not even come close to making you break a sweat.) I've tried all variations on the dishes - fish, beef, chicken, etc and even vegetarian, which I would like to say that... I really wish they would branch out beyond offering just tofu. The use of seitan, or other variations on mock-meat would be awesome - as the French might say... Le Sigh!) If you are brave enough to order sushi (maki -- you know... rolls) this far from the ocean -- be sure that you order it on a night when it's not busy -- if you take the chance on a busy night, be prepared for it to follow long after you've already consumed your main course. Also,on busy nights far too often I have found that they run out of the prepared sushi rice, which has resulted in the weird experience of warm sushi rice, and as another reviewer pointed out, the price does not quite equate to satisfaction. Not only did we wait 20 minutes to even have our existence acknowledged (it wasn't that busy), but once we did, I got a displeased attitude when I said I was ready to order. What else am I there for!? We were told that we couldn't order sushi (the only reason we came) because it would take too long. So we immediately got up and started to leave. Of course as we're getting up to leave, THEN they pay attention to us. Nope, too late. 11/10 will not be returning, it's a shame because I was so excited to try this place out too.
