How nice to finally want to leave a fully-positive review of a business! I've been familiar with LIsa's for decades, and have visited it every now and then over the years . . . even having spent 25 years on the west coast . . . and having first been entranced as a young man by its over-the-street, nearly treehouse-like vibe. (NEARLY. With a little imagination (or actually, a lot), a window seat, in view of the mature tree outside, Lisa's achieves realizes its full charm.) The interior is an understated, tasteful, comfortable, semi-hippie blend of artwork and plants. Last visit, I enjoyed perfect fried eggplant, and one of the very best Margherita pizzas (here, the "Margaret") that I've ever had. Real, fresh mozzarella; real, fresh basil; and, maybe most important, actual slices of red, fresh tomatoes (not just cheating with a mere tomato sauce, as some places do). This time, I started with a real bargain of a tossed green salad. It had so many ingredients (by my rough count, around a dozen) that I couldn't even identify some. A heaping, colorful, healthful and appealing salad that puts to shame the side salads that most other restaurants merely "phone in". (The balsamic vinaigrette is strong, so I'm glad that I stuck to my rule of ordering it on the side, so that I could control the amount used.) Pizza: Pepperoni and mushroom, with FRESH mushrooms, correctly sliced (large, flat slices taken top to bottom) to maximize their flavor. A satisfyingly thin and crispy cracker crust. Nice sauce. (My only disappointment -- a slight one -- was finding the taste of the crust rather bland. But on the other hand, even though I've had more than one flavorful crust elsewhere, I assume that it's easier to pack a thicker, more doughy crust with flavor than it is with a cracker crust.) Once again, the new owner's 20 something team has managed to send out a pizza that never should have left the kitchen. This small sausage and mushroom pizza had most of the cheese concentrated in the center, leaving approximately a 3-inch ring around the edge with no cheese at all. In addition, it contained only seven penny-sized pieces of sausage and about six slices of mushroom. I have spoken with both the owner and Hannah multiple times about pizzas and salads with missing ingredients, yet nothing changes. It is extremely disappointing and frustrating to have to drive back to the restaurant to address issues that should have been caught before the food was served. The owner appears unwilling to hire an experienced manager to oversee quality control, and the result is a product that is consistently falling short of low expectations. What makes this especially sad is that the previous owner and his wife spent decades building this business by taking pride in the food they served and ensuring customers received a quality product. Unfortunately, that commitment to quality no longer seems to exist. read more

Everything is always consistently good every time we visit! For Mother's Day we decided to celebrate it here, we tried the vodka pasta, and it did not disappoint, it was incredibly flavorful, very cheesy, and the portion size was good. We added crispy chicken to it, which was the perfect addition. We also ordered the alla vodka sandwich, which is a staple for us. It's a usual for a reason, the bread is always so soft and it's delicious. For our appetizer, we went with the fried calamari; but the portion did seem a bit less than what it usually is. We ended the meal with the tiramisu, which is always a solid, dessert choice here. I can't give them a five and don't want to give them a three, so I am compromising. We no longer live in the area where Lisa's , in the east side university neighborhood of Milwaukee, but remember it fondly from our younger days, so we called in a pickup order. It's probably true that our memories exceeded reality, but it just wasn't the same. Not as cheesy, not as bountiful, but some of the old flavors still remained, especially the sausage, with several spices. We learned that they still have many loyal customers who live in the area, patrons who have been regulars for over 60 years, so maybe next time we'll give it another try, perhaps eating in rather than reheating at home. read more

It's a cute little space with AMAZING pizza. I had the regular crust and the Detroit, and both were wonderful. Service was great initially, but unfortunately I went on a Friday night, and they were just understaffed. They have a huge volume of takeout orders, and a lot of people coming in as well. First, I think the food is a 5, but they forgot to send my beverage with my order....sadness. But on to the good stuff. The cheese breadsticks were not what I was expecting. They were thick and airy in the middle with an excellent outer crunch. And the clearly use very good mozzarella. I could have used just a touch more marinara, but very delicious. I ordered a deluxe pizza. This had an amazing amount of toppings. The crust was delightfully thin and crispy, even after a delivery. I think I enjoyed the sausage the most. Excellent flavor. Came to Lisa's Pizza with some friends. It's on the east side of MKE, and worth a visit! We tried the thin crust with cheese, sausage, mushroom, and onion, it was super flavorful with a nice crisp. We also tried the Detroit-style which was thick, cheesy, but overall just ok. I did like the thin crust a lot, so definitely worth a try! read more

I've had Lisa's quite a few times by delivery and my BF and we really enjoy their pizza. They have some interesting toppings on offer and fun pizzas and plenty of choices for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. I have not tried any of their non-pizza menu items yet, so I can't speak to them. I also can't vouch for their restaurant space, since we just get delivery. They do a great Milwaukee cracker tavern crust. The whipped ricotta topping is yummy and novel. We are fans overall, but I do think the prices are a little high. I love to support a small business but our delivered order ends up costing us as much as a fine dining evening out. Still, this is one of two or three pizza places we regularly order from in Milwaukee and it always hits the spot. read more

Tried Lisa's for the first time and went on a Tuesday to take advantage of their specials, 1/2 off pitcher of beer and buy one get one half off pizza. Really enjoyed the pizzas, two different styles made pretty well with quality ingredients. The build your own Detroit style with Wisconsin Brick Cheese and pepperoni was slightly over done but that didn't detract from the flavor. The slight umami hit from the dough balances out the touch of sweet from the sauce and the fattieness of the pepperoni. The pub style had a strong crust with pepperoni and a dollap of ricotta cheese on each slice with a drizzle of hot honey. I didn't get the heat of the honey but overall felt it was a great pairing. If you've been wanting to go, do it. read more

Whenever a restaurant comes under new ownership, there is always a question of what will happen with the recipes that made it noteworthy. Lucky for us, the new owners (Hannah and Dean) kept what worked and added their own amazing additions, backed by their own developing culinary backgrounds and experiences. For example, along with the traditional sauce that made Lisa's pizza so delicious, there is also Hannah's own dessert recipes, an espresso martini made with Dean's own cold brew coffee recipe and the garlic bread, also created by Dean. While small changes have been made to the interior, with more slowly on the way, you will still find the dining room dimly lit and intimate. Although service was a little slow to start, our girl who seemed to be running the whole show did the best she could. Then Dean arrived, and he did an excellent job engaging and assisting us. He was kind enough to answer all our questions and make recommendations. The large cheese, sausage, mushroom and onion pizza we shared was fantastic and made with a generous amount of toppings. The combo plate veggies had a crispy coating, which kept their texture tender but not soft. The cheesy garlic bread was to die for. One of, if not THE best, I've ever had. DO NOT go here without ordering some! Then there's the Tiramisu. WOW. You could taste the coffee, although not overwhelmingly so, and the cream was fluffy and not overly sweet. The ordering process was very easy and smooth one quick phone call. The lady on the phone was very nice, but I ordered from their late night menu and I was told when I asked for extra sauce that it was a generous amount of sauce but when I got my pizza, there was no sauce on it, except around the edges of the crust very disappointing And when I called the lady back on the phone while she was understanding which I hundred percent, give her credit for there was no mention of talking with the morning staff who make the pizza about correcting the issue I did come back two days after to get a refund and the process took less than two seconds she took the pizza and gave me my money back I just wanted this to be a warning for whoever orders here don't order off the late night menu. Oh man a Milwaukee pizza spot. There is something pretty special about the crust; melts in your mouth almost cracker like bar pizza. Man. Takes me back to waitressing and bartending at a place by the airport where every pizza was perfection. I digress. Lisa's is a cute spot, a few stairs up. Thin crust pizza is our jam. That being said- pizza is never good for take out- especially thin crust. We thoroughly enjoyed Lisa's. And will be back. The sauce has good flavor, same with sausage.. and loved the pepperoni on pizza as well. We looked online and saw they had three sizes to order- mistakenly ordered "large"- but got the 14"- instead of the 16". Lisa's was super kind and even offered to put in another order for us- but it really was our error... and we lived with our own mistake. Only had two working inside (working their butts off)- so a large group of people were waiting for tables on the stairwell ... which is hard to do takeout with a bunch of people in a queue. If you love thin crust pizza... out this on your list- it's a definite keeper. read more

In an effort to try to support more local establishments this past year, my husband and I realized we had been driving past Lisa's on Oakland Ave for quite awhile, and never stopped to try it out. WE ARE SO GLAD WE DID!! We've only done take out, and can't wait to dine in when we feel more comfortable to do so - the interior is comfortable, quaint and everything you'd hope for in a neighborhood Italian place! We've had the French Fried Eggplant ($8.00), which is served with a delicious marinara, and would highly recommend. It gives Sazs eggplant a run for their money, which was always my benchmark! The Calamari ($7.50) is also a nice starter, and a good portion for sharing too! But then, the PIZZA! I'm a die-hard thin crust girl, and by golly this is great thin crust pizza. We always do a build your own pizza in our house, and did 2 larges for 3 people. We had some leftovers, but honestly, you should probably just get the XL size because you won't want this pizza to end! Also, if you like sausage on your pizza, theirs is homemade, and delicious! I have been eating at Lisa's my entire life, just went tonight for the first time since the ownership change...wow...the pizza was as good as ever and we also sampled a few of the new items (Caprese and hot honey wings) Caprese was excellent - presented in a way that you would see at an upscale Italian restaurant and the portion was huge too....but the wings may have stolen the show - seriously perfect - crunchy, juicy and just right amount of hot honey. Just ate here. The staff was great our server super friendly and great. Other then that food was not good. We ordered onion rings. Gone is the old jukebox box and instead we get an incredible playlist of tunes from the 40's, and 50's. Craft cocktails are being added to the mix.
