I got the WORST haircut from Jamie McManus! I brought a photo of a haircut that I wanted her to replicate on me. She barely looked at the photo and then butchered my hair with a cut that she arrogantly said she likes better. It's going to take at least a year to grow out my hair. As someone who works directly with customers, my appearance and hair style is very important to me. With her rude unprofessional attitude, I can't believe Jamie is allowed to work with the public! I was recently visiting family from out of town and needed a quick trim. After reading the reviews I figured I would give Lisa James a shot since it was in my family's area. I was able to book an appointment that day and thought to myself how convenient! I soon found out the reason why it was so easy to book so quickly. My appointment was booked with a tall gray haired man. While cutting my hair he was gossiping about the neighboring businesses, clients and employees. Which I found extremely unprofessional. Halfway through the cut.. he paused to answer his cell phone and was texting on and off the entire time. I left with a some what decent cut but it was not worth the amount of money I paid. If I were a local I would definitely not be returning to this salon. It was a very bad first impression that left me with a bad taste in my mouth. read more

So, I hadn't cut my hair for almost two years because I just moved to metrowest and had yet to find a place I was brave enough to try. I yelpped Lisa James Salon, looked over the reviews, and decided that I finally had the ovaries to get my hair cut. I called Monday morning, and was able to get an appointment with Sharon that afternoon. Sharon was a week and a half deep into Lisa James, but she did wonderfully. I also had the chance to meet Jim, the owner! My hair (due to my resistance to find a salon) was a bit of a mess. I had stripped my hair about three years ago, so my ends were both dead, broken, and extremely brassy. Sharon washed my hair, and we did a treatment for my disgusting ends, then we did another treatment for the damage from blow drying and flat ironing. That experience was cool. I had never known that there were treatments for those types of things, even after being a Newbury St hair snob for five years. Sharon is a bit of a self proclaimed perfectionist (which I love), so the cut itself took a little while. But, she is friendly and chatty, so the time went by quickly. With the cut, two treatments, blow dry, and a new shampoo and conditioner, the price was only $100 (with the 25% new customer discount). Because of Sharon, my beautiful haircut, and the price, I will definitely be going back. read more

Finally found a good salon, with good prices, nothing outrageous...no frills...no fanciness...Theresa cut my hair and at first I was skeptical because she mentioned that she only was a stylist part time. So obviously, I thought she was going to butcher my hair. SO WRONG. My hair needed a good cut...badly...she cut 3 inches off, put a lot of layers that blended in so nicely. She actually listened to what I wanted! What a concept for hair stylists to actually listen to their clients! She was very liberal with cutting at first, which was great because I've had this long hair for a while. When she was done cutting, she swung my chair around and explained what she did and why. What? Explained? Get the hell out! She said she cut it this way because I said I needed volume and body...and I got volume and body. Love the new hair cut and it's so easy to manage. This is a lovely Wellesley salon. Very clean, friendly with nice service. My only quandary was with the person I saw whose name is Jane. I came in and she said "I wish they would have told me how much hair you have" as she had another appointment. I offered to leave if it was to much trouble. She said no, but I felt this to be un professional. So I stayed. When it was time to cut my hair she asked how much and I said 1 inch. She said that's all? I said yes, I asked her to clean up the layers and she did, but she cut more like 4-5 inches of my hair! I was shocked. So, I think this is a great salon but just be careful to make sure you tell them the length of your hair and be adamant about how much to cut. read more

I called on a whim, finding Yelp on my mobil phone. I was in need of a blow dry/style for my Fathers wake that night. The owner James answered the phone and offered to stay extra time (he normally leaves at noon on Monday in the summer) to accomodate my urgent request. He washed and styled my hair with perfection. It stayed 2 days, for the funeral which I had hoped. A total gentleman, and as honest as they come. I hope to return soon, but I don't want to cross the line and upset my current stylist. 3 stars because it was partly my fault, but I won't be back. Disclaimer that this is a guy's point of view. I set my first appointment here and was 15 minutes late - 5 min were my fault, the remainder because I couldn't find it. It's not actually on Washington St, rather set deeply into a side street. In any case, they said it was a 30 minute appointment (seems short) and so they couldn't take me. I felt they should have said they were so tightly scheduled, particularly at the price. And $50 for a men's haircut? More expensive than where I go on Newbury St. Unhappy at having made the trip, I pulled up yelp on my phone and found a 5 star barbershop within walking distance, Grove Street, and got a great $15 haircut. So maybe I should have done this in the first place. Strange that all the negative reviews are filtered out. 4.5 stars seems an overstatement given what some have said, in seemingly legitimate reviews. read more

I went in with a horrible haircut I got from another stylist (who will be properly reviewed) and was just hoping for the best from Yelp. Yet again, you all did a great job here. I had Jessica, who understood exactly what I wanted and understood exactly why I hated the cut I had. She was just the right level of chatty for me (i.e., not too much) while expertly and efficiently giving me a stylish, easy-care cut. I'm thrilled with my hair and that she showed me how to make it look good on an average day's schedule. The salon had a funky-meets-classy vibe. It wasn't your standard uptight Wellesleyish salon, but it was clearly well-cared for and kept extremely clean. Rather than try to keep me as a client and offer to book me with another stylist they simply told me to, "not come in." Huh? I'm actually really surprised to see all the positive reviews here. I've been here a few times. I had 2-3 different stylist, I guess I'm not picky on who it is. But I dont think I ever had the owners. In any case, all the stylists that I experienced were cheerful, and accommodating, and I have always loved my hair coming out of there. They provided suggestions on easy ways I can maintain and care for my hair. One day, I wanted to try bangs, the stylist did a great job, and even offered to retouch my bangs whenever I needed it. I also tried coloring my hair, and they did a good job with that too. The environment is pretty relaxing, modern, and welcoming I don't get the uptight vibe I usually get when I go to Ardan, I guess I was expecting that since it's wellesley. I made an appt. based upon the yelp reviews and a recommendation from a friend. I was able to get an appt within a couple of days of calling (which was important to me). I'm always apprehensive about seeing a new stylist because I've been getting my hair cut by the same person for over ten years now. I got a great cut and style by James and the new customer discount is very nice! James spent a lot of time discussing my hair and how he could cut it based upon my feedback before he got started and this really put me at ease. The salon has its own parking which is great. The only criticism I have is that the salon itself is difficult to find the first time around--especially if you're not familiar with the area. I've already made my second appt and I'm excited to be a "regular" customer of James' now! read more

Figured it was time to change things up a bit. I visited them for a partial highlight and cut, based on the Yelp reviews, and was not disappointed. Monica took good care of me. She's somewhat new to the salon and I highly recommend her - lots of attention to detail. I love the color and the cut looks great. I went to this hair salon based on the positive yelp reviews and the tempting 20% off coupon. For my first appointment, I got a nice cut, but didn't feel particularly good about the stylist's personal demeanor. I did make a second appointment for 3 months later. On the day of my scheduled appointment, I called to confirm the time and they couldn't find my appointment in the book -- turns out the stylist who previously cut my hair was no longer there and they had lost my appointment. They were able to accommodate me that day, but I did end up waiting 20+ mins. Once in the chair, I got a nice cut by a different stylist, but the chitchat of the other stylists & patrons was not for me. Again, I had good cuts both times, but the overall vibe and miscues just don't do it for me and I will not be returning. read more

Linda is fantastic. Honest and did a wonderful job on my hair. Didn't sell me what I didn't need. I loved that. She's been there for 20 years or close to that and it shows. This salon is so laid back and a breath of fresh air compared to a local 'A' salon that shall remain unnamed. I highly recommend this place. Update: Forgot to add, I called ahead to ask if I could bring my 4 month old (my sitter had canceled)...something I never would have been able to do at my previous California salon. I was told "absolutely". Now, I should mention there weren't other babies or small children when i arrived and it didn't seem like that sort of place (which is a good thing, in my opinion), but their flexibility and easy going approach is what impressed me. I am a longtime customer of Lisa James - first with Lisa, now with James, the co-owners, although Lisa isn't working in the shop for a while. The shop is super comfortable, Jim is a very talented hairdresser, and is warm and personable, besides. My hair is one of my best assets and I care alot how it looks, especially a while after a cut and color. People say my hair always looks good, which is a pretty amazing compliment. It's not about how long I spend on it, it's about a great cut and color. Once or twice when I didn't like something specific (I change my style frequently), Jim happily had me come right back in and adjusted whatever I didn't like, with no question, no charge. I recommend the salon to all my friends, and all who have pried themselves away from their own hairstylists have been thrilled at Lisa James. Appointment: I was able to get an appointment for the day and time I needed. First Impression: I was recognized as a new client and welcomed by the receptionist and the owner. Nice. Stylist: Katie. She was great. Very personable, gave me a great cut and color. Price: Fantastic! With the new client discount I got my cut and color for only $75. Even without the discount the price would have been great. I was paying close to $200 in Texas for the same service. This is a nice salon with a friendly staff. I have to admit, I have been there ONLY ONCE and that was a week before last thanksgiving, but I was incredibly happy with the results! My hair is short and I am trying to grow it out. However, my hair had gotten out of control and it is just beyond tellable! I had to get it trimmed just a TAD, plus layers, without going too far. I specifically told my stylist that I would allow LESS than 1/2 inch of hair to be cut off. She said that she needs to get the back of my head to match my sides, which happened to be very very short, so naturally I shook my head in disagreement. Eventually, we came to a middle ground and she did EXACTLY what I wanted her to do! I am still able to do a ponytail! It is still growing nicely. The first two times are 25% off the prices. However, I must admit... The regular prices DO make me (and my bank accounts) wince, but if it means getting a stylist who will listen to what you want rather than "doing what is best for you," I will pick that over a $35 haircut at Hair Cuttery or Super Cuts any day of the week!y read more

On March 18th I had a consultation and appointment with Brogan. I have dark brown hair and I wanted to see how achievable going blonde would be. I was told that my hair would take on an orange-ish color if I tried to lighten it that much so I decided that I would get highlights. At first I thought the highlights looked amazing, but when I arrived home and looked at my hair under a new light and with different parts I realized that my hair had turned out streaky. Of course I was mad but I just decided to not return. Then the next Tuesday I had put my hair into a ponytail and a friend commented that there was a large streak of really light blonde hair on the back of my head. That was when I decided that I would return to the salon for them to fix the streakiness and the blonde splotch on the back of my head. I called the next day, which was 10 days after the appointment. I was told that although their policy is 7 days after the appointment for a redo, since it was my first time there, "there shouldn't be any reason why the owner would deny your request". They asked me to call back the next day as to confirm a time for the redo. I called back two days later to be told that the owner denied my request of a redo. So I then argued with the manager to say of course I didn't notice that the hair looked bad immediately as my hair looked fine when parted to the left side (my normal part) but streaky when parted differently. I questioned the intentions of my hairdresser, Brogan, and whether she thought that I would not notice the streakiness. I was then asked to be put on hold, and was suddenly put on with Brogan, which I thought was incredibly unprofessional. So I argued with Brogan over the phone for about 20 minutes, as she was saying "Well I asked you how you part your hair" to which I responded "Well that doesn't mean I don't put it in a ponytail or want it to look good all over". All of a sudden I'm put on hold again, and then talking to a new manager, who asked me to come in for a consultation. I explicitly asked what a consultation means as I, obviously angered by the unprofessional staff, was not going to pay any more money to fix what should have been done correctly in the first place. She said that she couldn't say anything over the phone and that they would need to see my hair (which would've been nice if they said that half an hour ago when I first got on the phone). So I'm put on the phone with the first manager that I had initially talked to in order to schedule the consultation and as we were about to hang up I ask how I was supposed to know that the time span was 7 days for a redo, and she literally says: "You know what Sabrina, I don't know." (The first manager's name is Anna Marie.) I went in the next day for a consultation and all the new hairstylist did was change the color for the large streak on the back of my head and called it blended. So it was no longer the really light blonde but matched the rest of the highlights while still being a huge streak. I personally would not recommend the Lisa James Salon as the staff is rude, disrespectful and dishonest. I would definitely not recommend Brogan as your hairstylist. read more

I really have mixed feelings about this salon after my visit today. I went there because a friend had gone there and they repaired her color and did a fabulous job and all the great reviews here on YELP. My friend even treated me to a cut there for my birthday which came out pretty nice at the salon that day. I was in need of a color and it had been a long time since I had been to a salon to have that done because of budget constraints and I wanted to treat myself for Christmas. 1. Cons: First Big "OUCH" on the price tag. When I called the salon to make my appointment I specifically inquired about the pricing for a single process color and a cut and blow dry. I was told $65 for the color and $50 for a cut which included a blow dry. I thought "great"that is pretty reasonable especially for a Wellesley salon. I could have it all done for $115 (not including tip). When it came out costing me $175 and w/tip about $200, I was shocked as that was more than I wanted or budgeted to spend. Upon inquiring about the price, I found out that my stylist (Jayne) was $70 not $50 which I was NOT informed of when I made my appointment and Jayne had thrown in a "glaze" to blend my color which it turns out was an additional $40 which, again, I was not informed about at the time. I don't appreciate service providers that are not "up front" about their pricing and costs. I have a budget and I have to plan for what I can spend. 2. Con: Confusion/Misunderstanding about the 1st timer pricing of 25% off. When I arrived at the salon the receptionist asked if I was a first time customer. I said no, that I had been there before with a friend. I thought this was communicated to my stylist. When I met with Jayne and had the conversation about what I was looking to do with my color etc. she explained we could do a base color adding in strings with brightener and a glaze to blend it all (but I was NOT told about the additional cost of the glaze and I also did not ask at the time) and that I would get 25%off all of it all as a first time customer. I was surprised and delighted..but also a little confused, but truth be told when I came previously with my friend - she treated me so I didn't know what she paid and could not remember her telling me if she had gotten the 1st timer discount for me or not, so I thought ok great maybe they are giving it to me. After speaking with Shannon (who cut my hair last time with my friend) who confirmed that I had been there before, this was taken away. I was not trying to deceive anyone but there was clearly some misunderstanding here that led to confusion about cost. 3. The Cut: I explained to Jane that I wanted my hair longer in the back and shorter in the front with angles so frames the face - I guess I was thinking something along the lines of the picture on your YELP page here on the far left (but truth be told I did not mention that picture or bring in one). I also mentioned I was trying to avoid the "bob" type of haircut which reminds me of the same cut I had when I was "5". When we were done the cut looked nice and I said so but after leaving (with the sticker shock of the price) and going back to work and seeing it in other light, its basically a shoulder length "bob" haircut - A very simple basic haircut that I think any rookie right out of beauty school can do - I guess i expected something more from a $70 stylist (who at the time I thought was a $50 stylist). Perhaps I did not communicate this well enough but I am really kind of disappointed with it for what I paid. 4. The Pros: The color came out very nice and my hair does look significantly better than it did before i went in. I am not saying it looks bad or terrible it's just not any better or different than other places I have gone, just cost twice as much. I have been a longtime client of Jaime's and was so shocked at how I was treated at my last appointment at Lisa James. After they canceled my scheduled appointment due to closing to a COVID-19 cleaning, I rescheduled my appointment only to have my color done and then dumped in the middle of my haircut for her next client. Apparently, they double booked and I was asked to come back later in the week to finish my haircut. Seriously??? Jaime was more concerned about being late for her next client than bothering to think how I felt with a half done cut. If that wasn't bad enough, I was charged full price for the unfinished haircut! If you're looking for a salon where the clients are treated with respect, where the stylists don't carry on conversations with each other during your appointment, and where you can feel that you're cared about as a client, then find another salon- that's what I'm going to do. I was very disappointed by my recent visit to Lisa James Salon for a cut and color. The salon is in a great location with ample parking, although the interior was not as impressive - the floors needed to be cleaned and the salon chairs were stained. I arrived a few minutes early for my appointment, only to wait for 30 minutes to be seen by Katie. After the color had processed and my hair was shampooed by an assistant, I waited for an additional 25 minutes with wet hair while my stylist finished with another client. I left the salon with a color much different than I requested, an average haircut, and a poor blow out - no product was used, and my hair was flat and not fully dry. Katie was very nice and apologetic for the wait, and I received a 25% discount as it was my first visit. Unfortunately, those few positives could not make up for the overall negative experience. I do not plan to return to Lisa James and would not recommend this salon. read more

So disappointed - arrived for appointment as first time customer, told by stylist they would be closing before they would be able to finish my color and cut so appointment cancelled (!) but I should feel free to make another appointment and come back another day - really??? To respond to the salon's reply post: "Not exactly as you describe but let me explain." Hmmmm....you were not involved, as you state, but you feel it is appropriate to make that statement? If you had in fact been involved and handled the appointment differently than the manner in which it was, that would clearly have brought about a different, and likely welcome, outcome. Nonetheless, it remains the case that there was not enough time set aside by your salon, the appointment was therefor cancelled, and it was disappointing - any other representation of what took place - particularly by someone who was not involved- is inaccurate. The original post points out that your salon would benefit from improving its intake and scheduling process - how unfortunate that you missed that and felt the need to take the intent elsewhere. read more

I've been to Lisa James Salon twice, and I have found that the stylists there have done something no other salon has done before with me: they LISTEN to you! I have fine, but very curly hair, and most stylists don't know how to cut or style it. Typically they cut it when it's wet and pin straight, and then they dry it and it is far shorter than I wanted. I explained how I wanted my layers done, what length I wanted it when curly, and they listened! Aside from the great cut, my stylist introduced me to the Loreal professional line of hair care which is very specific to what kind of hair you have and its thickness. My hair has NEVER looked better and has never responded to a mousse, hair spray or gel like these! She really took the time to explain how the different products work and for which hair styles they would be best. To make the story better, when my stylist left they called and offered me a 25% discount on my next cut. I went in the other day and didn't need a cut, and the girl at the desk let me transfer the discount to my hair products instead and was so nice in the process. I would recommend this salon; the staff is friendly and it is genuinely high quality cuts and products which will make your hair look gorgeous! read more
