First time in Milwaukee. Was told I NEEDED to have a proper fish fry while I was here. I was recommended Liquid Johnny's was one of the best. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it wasn't the worst either. Was a little greasy, but good flavor. I got the combo, and I had to request extra tartar sauce and lemon because there wasn't enough. Service was what you'd expect from a bar type restaurant. My family and I (party of 5) sat outside, because one, we didn't want to wait for a table/booth since the venue is small, and two, it wasn't that cold outside (yet). Only recommendation is a few extra outdoor heater so every table can feel comfortable when eating outdoors. Now the question on everyone's mind, "would you go back?" My answer to that is: yes. I'd go back to give them another shot. I'm a firm believer that maybe that day was just someone else's bad day. So maybe I didn't get their best. read more

One of the best fish fries I've had in the Milwaukee area. It can be a pretty long wait if you get there during later dinner hours due to it being a small restaurant, but it was definitely worth it! The cod and perch were thinly breaded and crispy with great flavor. And the frickles were essentially pickle fries that I would literally go back for just for those. read more

I very much enjoyed liquid johnnys for post-game drinks/food. The staff here is so nice! The food is also pretty good - but the downside is that it is smaller and they dont have movable tables, so it makes it difficult for larger groups to post up. I wish their kitchen was open later though - it was always tough not being able to order food during later game nights. read more

The food is amazing but the staff is rude! I was left standing at the entrance and ignored for 10 min and a older couple walked in and was greeted right away. We went to West Allis A Le Carte on the first Sunday in June(a Summer Staple for us) and was a little hungry.Walked around and there were many many options to choose from (A le carte has really grown).Decided to stop at Liquid Johnny's and decided on fried pickles. What a excchoice it was! They were hot and crunchy,and the dipping sauce really took them to the next level(so sorry I totally forgot to take a picture!).They really left me wanting more.I've had fried pickles many places and they are hit and miss, sometimes to much batter,sometimes to mushy,and sometimes to much pickle,if that's even possible. Johnny's were perfect(1 of the best I've ever had),now they've left me wondering if the rest of their menu is just as good??? I am definitely gonna check them out and see! Holy moly! I had heard about the legendary fish fry at this iconic West Allis corner bar, and it lived up to the hype! Standing in the shadows of State Fair park, this small, classic Stallis bar serves up an amazing fish fry with some stellar service. I pulled in around 6pm on a Friday and there was a line out the door waiting to dine at one of the booths in the bar area. I was fortunate to snag a seat at the bar and was treated to some excellent and fast service by the bartenders. I ordered the combo and chose the classic fish fry with a huge piece of baked cod with jerk seasoning. You can mix it up with fried cod, baked cod and shrimp. They have a wide selection of fish options with fried, baked (with the option of lemon pepper, cajun and jerk seasoning), shrimp and walleye. The fried cod was so good, perfectly light and crispy batter with tons of flavor. You could tell this is some quality fish. The jerk seasoned cod was also superb. It was a massive piece and the jerk seasoning gave it a nice unique flavor. I ordered the garlic mash as a side and it paired nicely with the fish. The service was fantastic. We stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon and found out there's free hotdogs on Sundays! The bar is dim lit with a few booths and dart boards in the back. The patio is very nice with comfortable seats and a covered section. The bartender was very friendly and checked on us even outside. We had some fried pickles and chicken wings (highly recommended by another customer) and weren't disappointed. I'm so glad that we were able to stop in here for a Friday Fish Fry. It was my first visit after hearing about them for quite some time and they did not disappoint. We both went with the Original Cod. It felt like I had to start there before branching out. Holy man, it was awesome. The fish was hot and had not been premade/kept warm. It was fresh, moist, crispy and not greasy. It truly is everything a fish fry in Wisconsin should be. The tartar, coleslaw- classic, creamy and delicious. The potato pancakes didn't look house made and I don't know if there are or not but wow- they sure tasted like they were. Outstanding. The service was also totally on point. I've been hearing about this great fish fry for a while and it's in my neighborhood so we figured it was time to get there. This is a cute little neighborhood bar, known for their bloody Mary's and their fish fry. Service is fast and friendly, very welcoming. There is limited seating, about 7 tables, and about 20 seats at the bar. We got there around 4 and were easily seated but when we left at 5 there was already a pretty long line. We started out with the clam chowder, which was delicious. The soup was served hot. It was thick with large pieces of clam and potatoes. Served with oyster crackers. One thing that I really like is that with battered cod, you can have a 2,3, or 4 piece dinner. Same with the perch. There is a 3 piece or a five-piece. They also had a shrimp dinner and a walleye dinner. All these options can be baked or fried, For sides, there was ff, sour cream and chive wedges, garlic mashed, potato pancakes, tater tots, and onion rings. I had the combo plate with fried cod and the perch with sour cream and chive wedgie and my sister had the 2 piece fishery with onion rings, Dinners are served with coleslaw and soft marble rye and served with plenty to take home. I really wanted the perch but when it was time to order I got the combo with perch and regular fish because I didn't want to miss out on the famous original fish fry. Batter was light and crispy, fish was tender and flaky, I'd have to give this fish fry a solid five stars. if you go, get there early or be prepared to wait (however service is fast and table turnover is quick) read more

Called in an order for take out and they were busy! Staff were all very friendly. We ordered cheese curds, a cod fish fry, and a perch fish fry. The cheese curds were not our favorite. They were small and greasy. We would not order again. Both fish frys more than made up for the mediocre cheese curds! The flavor of the breading was wonderful. The tartar sauce tasted super fresh. We went as a party of 3 on a Friday night. We only had to wait 20 minutes for a table which we were told when we entered and they were spot on. The service was amazing! Everyone was helpful and super friendly. The food was delicious. We started with fish bites and sauced teriyaki shrimp. The shrimp sauce was delicious and I am already planning to go back. My husband had the perch which he enjoyed and I had a fish sandwich. The brioche bun was slightly dry but the fish was light and flaky. My son had a 3 piece cod fish fry which he devoured. I've never been a big fan of this place but based on friends raving about it I decided to give them another try. Stopped in on a hot Friday evening during summer fest. Air conditioning didn't seem to be working as the inside of the bar was super hot and muggy. Ordered a couple old fashions and couple bottles of cider. Old fashioned was decent not the greatest. We all ordered a different fish entree fried, baked, and Cajun. Fish was decent you get a huge portion with your order. Tater tots and side salad was nice. Not a fan of the potato pancakes they're obviously frozen not fresh. Food here wasn't bad just not my favorite place to catch a fish fry. Drinks are decently priced service was decent. New parking lot is beautiful makes the place look a lot nicer. Nice large outdoor patio if you're in the hanging outside. read more

Really decent fish fry! BF and I went here last Friday. Walked into the bar and it was pretty busy, despite the early hour. Bar had only one open seat. Only a few tables but we put our name in for one had had a beer while waiting (pretty good tap beer selection). Cod was excellent! Walleye was OK. Get the cod. Not reason to wait until 8pm for the all you can eat. We brought fish home from the regular order. LJ's has long been a supporter of Milwaukee blues music. I used to come here regularly on Tuesdays for a blues jam that often included a who's who of Milwaukee blues. They've since terminated that series, but you're still likely to hear some tasty grooves here - whether they be live or recorded. The food is respectable too. And it won't break the bank. Moments before authoring this, I enjoyed a fresh grilled chicken chicken salad with lots of fresh greens, cukes, 'maters and onions. For $7.50, it was a solid and healthy value. You know what else? The place is strikingly clean. That's saying something, 'cause I know this place gets used hard - especially on a Friday night (I'm writing this on a Saturday afternoon). As I look around, the floor's vacuumed, the bar and tabletops are spotless and the mirrors shine. To my Mom - the original Yelper before Yelp - cleanliness was everything. Liquid Johnny's is about as much a local tavern as you can get. This is only one of the things to love about it. As much of a local tavern as it is, Liquid Johnny's manages to be current while maintaining that gin mill charm that those of us who grew up near the neighborhood bar know well and crave. The bartender was able and willing to make me a Wisconsin Old Fashioned and proved not only to know this locally famous and popular drink but also how to make a traditional Old Fashioned...a rarity in 2016. (As an aside, every bartender should be proficient in classic cocktails). It wasn't that she made me one, it was that the questions she asked about my Wisconsin Old Fashioned proves her knowledge of its predecessor. Why four stars? Well, we didn't have the chance to eat there. So, until we return and spend some extra time and what would easily be one of my favorite haunts, four stars is what it gets. I went to here a couple of times while my daughter was in hockey practice across the street to have a beverage with the other hockey parents. However, today I was actually hungry and decided to try the food. I asked the bartender what she would recommend and she suggested the steak sandwich with tots, even though the burger was on special. I ordered bases on her recommendation and the first time time the sandwich came out, the paper from the cheese was left inside the sandwich. They offer to remake it, I said OK reluctantly. The second time it came out with a frozen pretzel bun. The bartender brought it to the cooks's attention. He then looked at me and said fuck her. I guess I need a new place to go to. It was not my fault that the l cook left the paper that divides the cheese in the middle of the sandwich or served a ice cold frozen bun. I find it repulsive. Tell me and will not assume his fault and that he will continue to serve food and insult his female customers. read more

I am a bar owner The stools at the bar were taken so I ordered a beer and a menu and went to a high top and waited and waited and listened to the life story of one of the two bartenders on duty so I guess if you are at a table it's no service you have to be at the bar I walked out in disgust!
