My friend has long lamented the makeup company Bite going out of business because they made her favorite dark purple shade of lipstick that according to her, is not carried by any other brand. So for her birthday this year I took her to Lip Lab, where we could each make a custom lipstick, down to the exact shade we'd want and she could live out her dark purple lipstick dreams once more. We'd both heard from others that this was a fun and worthwhile experience, so we entered on this blustery evening looking forward to whatever Lip Lab had in store for us. This soho location was packed on the Saturday night I visited-- a good sign, I thought. Despite trying to make eye contact with any employee working there, we were not acknowledged or helped for a good 10+ minutes before I walked over to someone to ask how we could start our scheduled session. The employee seemed entirely nonplussed and eventually called another person over to help us. This person had the enthusiasm of a damp rag and seemed to not care less to be helping us through the making of our lipstick. We followed the perfunctory steps to choose a shade, a name for our lipstick, the color of the lipstick container, and the typeface we wanted the name of the lipstick to be etched with. I will say I had her redo mine about 4 times until I got a color I was satisfied with, and she didnt seem annoyed by that, which I appreciated. There really wasn't much more to the experience other than making those selections, though I thought the machine to etch the name of our lipstick onto the tube was quite impressive. I suppose for our specific use case, which was to create a shade that doesn't really exist on the market, this experience served up the product we were looking for. My friend designed a lip stick for me in a rose gold case. The scent that she chose for me was a mocha chocolate with a light brownish red color. We chose the font for the lipstick and we both chose a pretty script. The employees were kind enough to hold on to the lipsticks for us in order for us to make our dinner reservations at a local ramen restaurant. The price of the lipstick is around the same as a prada lipstick from Sephora but you're not just paying for the product, you're paying for the experience and the service. The price was worth it. Came for a birthday party & what an experience. The consultants were super energetic and informative. All were super glam and accommodating to the group of 15 with easy and poise. We had the whole space to ourselves and we all got the minimum required for the event ($65) and came out with our own personalized gloss or lipstick or linar. The actual experience of making the lipstick and the cheek stick was very fun and love the concept. I will say they were definitely busy and they have a 10 minute late policy that they wont seat you if you are more then 10min late but we got there on time for our reservation and waited 18 minutes to be seated for two of us and then when we were seated the person that was doing it with us was told she had to take a break which we understand but it was a little frustrating after waiting so then another person came up and started doing things with us and then right after that somebody else took over and that person we had the rest of time until the end when somebody else bagged our stuff and gave us everything. But I saw like a bigger party come in right after us and got seated immediately and I just felt like we kinda got a lesser experience than others. Lip Lab Soho was more of a visual experience than immersive. From the moment we walked in, we were hit with bold pinks and a setup that felt more like a beauty showroom than a retail space. I loved all the pink! I went as part of a birthday celebration with six friends, and even though we were a bit late for our 4:30 reservation, the staff got us seated after a bit of shuffling. My color expert, Monee, was the highlight of my experience. She was patient, funny, and gave honest, helpful feedback while I tried to choose the right shade of fiery red. I don't usually wear lipstick, but I ended up naming mine Phoenix Flame (inspired by my love for Harry Potter, lol!) and the boldness of the shade. Watching the mixing process behind the scenes was cool, though you're not the one making it, which I think is important to know beforehand. My biggest issue was how steep the price of this experience was. Between the $25 deposit (which doesn't count toward the $65 minimum spend), I walked away with one lipstick and a branded bag. At nearly $100, it's definitely a luxury experience. And with only one bathroom for all guests, the setup wasn't quite as elevated as the price suggests. Still, if you're going for a special occasion--birthday, bachelorette, girls' weekend--it's a memorable and super custom way to mark the occasion. I visited Lip lab and I had good experience making a lip balm and lipstick. I took off the expiration sticker off my lip balm and there is a big hole. There is nothing protecting the lip balm besides the sticker. Their customer service team stated that the hole is their company's standard. This is odd considering any lip product in the pharmacy does not have this issue. Their lipstick container does not have this issue. Their solution to this unhygienic issue is just don't remove the sticker. They did not offer any solution, declined to provide a replacement or credit. This gaping hole was not brought up by the sales associate at the time of purchase and it is not shown in their website so there is lack of transparency. Had I known that their lip balm product is unhygienic, I would not have spent $35 on it. read more

You not only get to blend together your own perfect shade, you get to choose the color of the lipstick tube and get it engraved with the name of your shade (I just put my name with a kiss because I'm unoriginal and could not think of one). Cute store, cute experience! Staff were nice, but a little disorganized. We were greeted and "checked in" for our reservation by one person, and then another person comes up to ask for our information again, but then seats us at the makeup bar without giving us any further detail. So we waited there for about 10mins before grabbing the attention of the woman who sat us to inquire what was next. She apologized and another woman came over to start our session. She thought we had chosen what we wanted, but as it was our 1st time and no one had instructed us on the process, we didn't know what to do. Aniya then apologized as we were supposed to have been explained how to choose what we wanted to make (gloss vs lip stick), matte/satin/sheer, color family, and other details. It is about $85-150 per person, depending on what options you elect. She was very knowledgeable and made the rest of our experience awesome. The lipsticks and liners are vegan and very creamy, even the matte. It was such a cute process, and we loved the way our cosmetics turned out. Not sure why the party of children was accepted or if they do children's parties, they don't have a separate area for them. This was so fun!! Took our tween and teens for a Sunday day of fun. The first step was that you tell the "chemist" what color you want and if you want a gloss, balm or lipstick. My experience at lip lab was extremely lack luster. The technician that worked with my sister and I was very dull and very unwelcoming. She messed up several times making my lipstick. First she did not mix the correct amount to make the lipstick so she had to do the mix over, then when putting the lipstick into the bottle she did that incorrectly so the lipstick went into the bottle slanted. Because of this, she had to complete the entire process over. When she was engraving the top of the lipstick bottle the name did not go on completely so she had to do that over as well. I did not use my lipstick the day it was made I used it the following day. When I opened it the following day the entire lipstick broke off and fell out the bottle now I can not use it. Also I asked for a matte finish and was given a sheer finish. Loved, loved, loved our experience here! Literally came here to replace my discontinued favorite Bite lipstick (their former subsidiary). I thought I could walk in and just find a suitable color that was a close match and walk out. As it turns out, Lip Lab doesn't really make premade/mixed colors. I always knew that you could book parties and custom make lippies, but I didn't know that pretty much everything that comes out of their store is custom made. We were a group of four and as walk-ins, they squeezed us in between their scheduled bookings. The whole process was so fun and interesting from choosing colors to watching them mix and play with colors to get close to my discontinued lipstick. You also can choose the scent/flavor for your product (mango and pomegranate are top contenders), your casing, and the font you want engraved. And you get to name it whatever you want. The initial custom lipstick is $65, but to reorder in the future is $45. You can also bundle if you want to add other items like gloss, or lip therapy etc. Paige was so knowledgeable of all their products and knew how to make the best recommendations. She 99% knocked it out of the park on my discontinued color in her first try! I was happy with it but she said she needed to pull one color back, and on her second pass, it was identical to my color. A true pro! On top of this, as I mentioned previously, I only came to replace one lipstick, but with Paige's recommendations, I left with a custom lip gloss as well as a lip liner too. Vv happy with my purchases! She and Weslin (not 100% sure of her name as she was helping the other ladies in our group) another associate, were extremely helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. My friends and I had an appointment on Friday, April 22nd for the three of us. This has been an almost decade-long desire of mine to go to one of the Lip Lab locations, and Kaley and Grant made it everything I dreamed of. I came in with inspiration for two lipsticks. The first lipstick is $60 and each additional is $40. While this may seem like an extravagant purchase (to be fair, it is), you are paying for precision shade creation, the finish, the scent (if you wish), the pick of packaging, naming your lipstick, and having the color recipe to repurchase in the future. To walk away with your own creation is so incredibly satisfying. Kaley is an artist. She matched both the colors I wanted perfectly, and was patient and worked to create these with me. As they make each iteration, you get to try them on and give your feedback of what you want more or less of until your reach your ideal shade. Her and Grant--who helped mix our final lipsticks--were wonderful and I could not have ask for better people to work with. An additional benefit is getting Bite Beauty products at a discount. They offer a few different things that you can snag at a good price. I was able to get the lip scrub for like $7! The Lip Lab was clean, with the workers wearing masks and gloves. It is a small space which is why they work off of reservation only, but they are able to accommodate larger groups. In the beginning of November my friend booked a private party at night and honestly it was the worst experience in my life hands down. As soon as we walk-in I notice everything was disorganized and clutter they had boxes everywhere it looked like they just opened that location. They rushed the whole process and didn't give us any information about the design of the lipstick or anything and when we asked questions they would say we already told you that even though they only told two girls out of the six. I have no idea what was going on behind closed doors but the tension was high. So part of the lipstick deal you could choose between three designs colors but they didn't have one in stock so we only had two. The Lipstick is suppose to be personalize so you pick a name for the lipstick and you have "options" from different fonts and symbols but they didn't tell all the girls so I said ask "hey, you didn't tell me that we could put symbols or select a font of our choice" the employee quickly and rudely responded "well it's too late " and I said "OK that's fine " naturally I was upset because this lipstick isn't cheap. It was like they were making the choices for us, and just wanting us out of the building. After a couple minutes, she said OK I'll change it if you want me to at that moment i didn't realize that she was just trying to be vindictive so she took my lipstick back and didn't even ask me what font I wanted and she did put the symbol on the lipstick, and she chose the font that she wanted, and it turned out differently from the rest of girls. The font was ugly. Anyways, long story short it's a huge waste of money and time especially for people traveling out of town to celebrate a special occasion. Your Personal tech will ask you short questions to help you decide what type of shade and texture you like. Try it on and sample different mixes. If you don't like it, try another mix. She was very knowledgeable, sweet, & patient. She explained the different finishes and everything we needed to know to create our own lipsticks. They provide micellar water to remove any lip products you may have entered with. They also prep your lips by providing a lip scrub and lip mask that feel really nice. My friend started and was having a hard time finding her perfect satin lip. Luna was super patient and mixed up a bunch of combinations for her. I tried out the sheer finish first, Luna nailed my color on the first try. I decided I preferred a gloss so she mixed that up for me. We ended up leaving with glosses we were both very happy with. With tip the 2 glosses ended up being $130. It is a bit pricey but it's so worth it! You're going to get a lip product you love & the experience itself is really nice. I didn't have the amazing time that others had. When my friends and I arrived for our experience, we were not treated as nicely as some of the other patrons who were there. The first tech who worked with us quickly sat us down and barely explained how the session would go. In fact, she placed the tray with everything we needed in front of my friends and I, and then expected us to figure out how we were going to select colors, cases, scents, etc. Because we were confused, we asked several techs to explain the process to us. Apparently that was a huge inconvenience to everyone. After several attempts, we were met with snide and snarky remarks once one of the employees who appeared to be the manager came to assist. The "manager" - who had orange hair pulled into a high poof and a single dreadlock - was extremely rude. Each time my friends and I asked questions we were met with rudeness. We were told that we could have a choice with our colors. When we asked for something specific, the manager would curl her lip and tell us that the specific color we wanted didn't match our skin tones. I'm sorry, but if I'm paying $55 and up for lipsticks or colors, give me what I want and don't use colorism as your reason for not giving me what I asked for. When I asked for beige, the manager looked at me in disdain and widened her eyes. She was so incredibly rude that I asked her if there was something wrong with my selection. I had to say something because her attitude was a little more than I would have liked for what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing experience with friends. The manager only became friendlier towards the end of the experience - probably because she expected a tip for horrible service and attitude. To add insult to injury, the manager was extremely helpful, kind, and courteous to another group that arrived after my friends and I did. I wouldn't waste my time, energy, or well-earned money at Lip Lab. Not worth it. No one deserves to be treated poorly when they're paying money for an experience. Next stop? Lip Lab by Bite is such a fun and unique concept for a girls night out! I came here for a private party, and loved every bit of the process. The location is perfect for small celebrations. They were able to close the space entirely for our party, which was awesome. First, we were greeted with a glass of Prosecco and a small snack. After this, the fun began with mixing colors to create our personalized lipsticks. There are tons of color combos you can choose from, in addition to fragrances and textures. Also, the ladies who work here are absolutely phenomenal! They were super patient and helpful throughout the entire process! Definitely give this place a go - so worth it! read more

Honest Review Below: I was really excited to make my own lip balm with a friend! However, we should've known how terrible the service would be from the moment we stepped in. We weren't acknowledge at all and when my friend told them we had made an appointment, one of the workers just told us to sit and wait. When we asked what colors they had, she didn't give us any leads and just told us to choose a color. We randomly decided on pink and she started making a color in front of us. She gave us a brochure which we looked through and that was where we read all the info with the color ranges. On the brochure, there was an option to choose a finish (matte, sheer, balm, etc.). While my friend and i both wanted to make a balm, i asked the worker if there were any differences between balm and sheer. She said there weren't any differences, so based on the brochure, i asked her if i could have it sheer. She agreed without telling me that making it sheer would turn it into a lipstick which was 65$ instead of a lip balm ($40) which i wanted. Not only that, the brochure that we looked at was old and didn't have any new information. This left us even more confused with the entire process. The entire process took less than 30 mins because nothing was properly explained to us and we felt rushed the entire time. Not only was i unhappy with the overall experience , when i tried on the lipstick at home, i realized that the color she showed us in store was entirely different from what i received.
