I went to the Lip Lab in Soho years ago but didn't make anything. I remebered when this location opened in Williamsburg and opted to gift this experience to someone. Naturally I made a reservation for myself too. For our Lip Lab experience, I made a reservation for Lip Layers which included a custom liptick and a custom lip gloss. When we got to our reservation we basically had the place to ourselves. Right before we arrived, a private party was ending. I didn't know what I wanted to create but ultimately for the lipstick I wanted to recreate one of my favorite Kat Von D colors. To start off your reservation you meet with an employee who explains the experience. First you choose your shade then choose your finish (satin, balm, matte or sheer), add choose your scent (mango, vanilla, peppermint, pomegrante and rose), after that choose your case (sage, penny, copper etc). For the last step, you name your product and they engrave it. I love my products. Great size and value. The product is long lasting. You won't be disappoinnted. This was fun. The staff was really helpful and friendly. I loved how they work with you to get your perfect color. In the event that you want to order again, they give you a card with your fomula. Lastly if you don't want a customized item they sell ready made item likes from lip care, lip liner, lip stick, lip balm, blur cheek sticks and brushes. Had the best time w/ my 3 girlfriends on our field trip...LOL! I thought this would be a fun activity. I didn't want to dinner or brunch, b/c we always do that. We like make-up so thought why not. Celebrated my birthday here and loved how pretty it was decorated. I came with my 3 best friends and everyone left with 1 lippie and i left with 3. 1 lip balm & 2 lipsticks. My friends chipped in and got me one of them and i got the others for myself. I love that you can pick the colors and the names of your lipsticks. I want to come back to make a lipgloss and matte lipstick. The only reasons i gave it 4 stars is i felt a bit rushed by the staff member. I wanted a true brownish nude lipstick but was not liking the colors and settled for a color i liked but didn't love. Mostly bc i felt rushed. The pink and coral colors were more spot on. I wanted matte but they recommended satin and i went with that instead. Another issue is there's no restrooms. When I first saw this place, I told my daughter & her friends about it, and I made it happen- I took them here! The night before, they called me to confirm my appt and said for 3 people, it'll be an hour & a half. They work with each person individually. We arrived about 10 min. early, and got seated @ exactly 3:30 (our appt time). The girls opted for the lip gloss. The mixologists who worked with them were amazing and patient. You get to create your own shade (they mix it to your liking), you get to try it on and see if you like it or not, then you choose a flavor scent, & the best part- you get to name it/ add symbols, choose a font and they engrave it. The girls had a blast customizing their own lip gloss- they loved it! However, it did not take an hour & a half. We left @ 4:10, which is a total of 40 min. from start to finish, and $180 for 3 lip glosses. Not complaining, just saying. Overall, it was such a fun experience. read more

Wonderful experience we had at Lip Lab! We were a group of 5 and went during the afternoon and had the whole place to ourselves. We had 2 lip makers helping us with the color. My lip maker was so attentive, especially with me switching colors back and forth, she was more than willing to try different color tones, I knew I wanted a red undertone, so she was testing between red and blue, red and pink, red and orange. She had a lot of patience with me! Overall, I did end up with a beautiful red and blue color that all my friends agreed were perfect for my skin tone. I have visited this location twice and made four different lipsticks at this point! Still very in love with them all!!! It's such a unique and fun experience to go (especially with friends)! It's completely tailored to you and the Color Experts work with you and take their time to make sure you love every aspect of your lip product! I really took my time and tried a hundred different tweaks to my lipstick and I swear they were okay with it! There's disposable applicators for you to test every tweak you make to the product and makeup remover as well! There's different lip products you can choose from and you get to choose every aspect of it. As for mine I got lipsticks every time and I chose different finishes and scents for them all! I was able to tailor a custom red, pink, peach, and brown lipstick. You're able to pick the name of the lipstick as well and have it engraved on the case. You get a card at the end with the specific measurements of the hues used to make your product (Ex: how much yellow, white, and red went into the brown lipstick you made) so that you are able to reorder it online when you run out! Overall Fabulous Experience! I came here on a Thursday with my best friend as an early birthday treat. I had an 11:30 appointment but was running a few minutes late. I called to let our lip expert, Rachel, know and she was completely accommodating. When we arrived she welcomed us in and explained how our lipstick making reservation worked. She was super nice and knowledgeable. The swatches My friend and I made 10 or so swatches. We never felt rushed and Rachel listened to us. Phenomenal concept poorly executed. I had such high hopes for this experience and it fell a bit flat. Firstly, it felt incredibly transactional and like the folks that worked there didn't want to be there and were going through the motions. Secondly, the available options were so limited that my 2 friends and I ended up getting such similar colors, not because that is what we wanted, but that is all that was really available. Since you are paying for a lipstick, you might as well get one made. Thirdly, there isn't a restroom available to customers. This is shocking, especially since we booked for 3 people, and there was only 1 staff member working with us, so the whole process was around 2 hours. Super cool idea. We got so lucky having the opportunity to go in during Covid. We didn't have an appointment ( they are appointment only now) and just had noticed that they didn't have anybody in there after we drove by. We popped in, they asked if we had an appointment and we ofc didn't, and they were able to fit us in. Now we have some amazing lip colors for upcoming events and I have not stopped getting compliments on them. I love trying new things and with CoVid it's been harder than usual to get out and have fun freely. My godmother turned 60 this weekend and I'm so glad I was unexpectedly introduced to this gem of a spot. As far as CoVid measures initially we were the only 2 customers in the shop. About an hour later two others came in to be serviced. We were socially distanced and masks were enforced. There are also glass partitions between the customer and employee. We were also told that they are limiting guests during this time. Reservations are suggested but walk ins are welcome if there is room. The experience was a good one. We got to create, try on and create some more colors (up to 6) for choosing. There are different finishes and scent for the lipstick that you choose. The lipstick takes about 30 mins to mold on site and you can name your color for the name to be placed on the tube. I mean a really great time. Lastly our host , E!!! AMAAAZING . Yes I mean to have extra A's lol . She was so cool and fun making the experience an even better time. We had a great time together. I would recommend everyone request her as your colorist. Poor customer service and underwhelming experience. I was so excited for this experience but unfortunately we had a very mellow and non enthusiastic employee. She offered no insight, was one-worded with her responses and barely engaged with us. It seemed like a bother if we did not like the shade she mixed and had to do another. At times she was snappy and cut us off while asking questions. The other stations had really enthusiastic and fun employees who would say things like "I know what color would look good on you" and give feedback, whereas ours was very indifferent towards us. There was a mix up with making our profiles and she asked a manager (I assume), who also had a rude attitude. It was our first time and we didn't know how the profiles worked. We weren't satisfied with the end products but preferred to end, instead of continuing with the blank stares that she gave us. Really fun and unique experience. I booked my appointment through classpass (excellent deal) and was the only customer on a Friday early evening (at the end of my session a large group came in - this definitely would be a fun girls night out experience). I worked with my consultant who was very friendly and explained the process in detail. You get to build your lip color and then customize it to the max through finish, scent and packaging. The hardest part is determining what kind of color you want. I ended up saying I was looking for something in between a neutral and a going out shade and we worked together to determine what that actually meant ;p. Each final lipstick is made of 3-4 colors and the consultant blends it on a laminated paper with measured portions before you can try it on. Then you can modify based on the results. I did two rounds of modifications before finding a color I thought looked best. I was not a fan of the light in the store and recommend checking your color out close to the window for the best results. I enjoyed the color process so much that I decided to add on a second lipstick ($40, first color is $60). This time I went for a red and didn't like the initial direction we went it so took a 180 turn for the second revision and loved the final result. Once you have your color decided on you get to add the finishing touches, like naming your color and what font to use for your magnetic lipstick case. While you do this your lip color is melted down and mixed before it's poured into an old-school bullet mold. Then voila! Your lip color is ready and perfectly yours :) read more

The $20 that you put down for your deposit you do not get that back and it does not go toward your final bill and you do not get a one on one person. I am so angry right now because of all the unnecessary back and forth emails with Rachel from the Williamsburg store regarding my daughter's birthday event at your location since October 28th.  Rachel should have sent me an invoice for my event date of 11/20 @ 12 pm like I asked her to over a week ago and I would have confirmed by paying for my daughters party. I clearly asked for her to send me an invoice back on November 2nd to which she either did not see or disregarded my request.   This was completely unprofessional and bad business practices as she did not make any attempt to ensure that my date and time was confirmed or called me to solidify this event.  I have sent out invites to my guests with the 12 noon to 2 pm time frame and I have a meeting at 5 pm for my organization that I cannot miss because I am the president.  I have decided to not book with this business anymore as this has ruin my child's birthday and I rather not do business with people that have no regard for their consumers requests or needs.  I hope that in the future, this will not happen to another person. This was my first time going to a lip lab but I kinda new what to expect(I follow a lot of beauty gurus on social media) but honestly.. Forget expectations. My experience was like no other. To start, Rachel and Fran are the most wonderful, professional, BEAUTIFUL women inside and out. They were both soo incredibly helpful and just SWEET! It was a long process (about an hour) - I'm super picky. But they were soooooooo patient. I ended up walking out with not one but TWO custom lipsticks. I actually wish I had more money on me at the time because I wanted more . My favorite part about my experience was the teamwork/relationship between both Rachel and Fran, you could just tell they work well together. One of the plus sides of the pandemic is that things I would normally have to do in person, I'm now able to do virtually. When I found out the Lip Lab had virtual appointments, I immediately booked myself a spot--I wanted my "dream nude" (along with probably the rest of the humans who go in to make a custom lip color). As someone whose complexion practically glows in the dark, most nudes are either too something: Too brown, too pink, too pale, too dark, too orange...you get the idea. My artist, Paulette, and I definitely joked about how literally everyone wants this elusive perfect-for-them nude. She asked what I've liked and what I haven't liked about lipsticks in the past; we discussed finish, flavor, and name (the coolest part), and the mixing process. She tilted the camera so I still got to watch the process of the colors being mixed together. The initial mixing was honestly way closer to my vision than I thought it would be, and two small tweaks later, it was perfect. It was a beautiful intersection of brown, pink, beige, and peach, which in typing out sounds like it would be muddy, but was absolutely lovely. I also found myself telling her a second shade was "dealer's choice". Y'all. If you have the means and the time to do this? DO THIS. I wound up with a gorgeous satin orange that I would never have picked out for myself, but I know is going to look absolutely killer when it shows up. Truly, it TRANSFORMED on the mixing sheet. She nailed it on the first mix and I absolutely cannot wait to try them both when they arrive. Through the whole process, Paulette was knowledgeable, never pushy (but still guiding--important for my indecisive Libra self), incredibly kind, and super, super cool. I'm only mad that I live in Chicago and that I can't go visit all the time! I'm not being hyperbolic when I say this was probably the greatest beauty experience that I've ever had. I don't have enough good things to say about this experience!! My friend made an appointment for us and another friend and I really had no idea what to expect. I've never been big on lipstick or known what to use, so I was intrigued by the idea of personalized lip colors and it also just seemed like it might be fun. We had an appointment at 2pm and the three of us had Marquis and Tanya dedicated to us. They were absolutely incredible from the beginning. They explained the concept to us patiently and walked us through all of our lip prepping. The process from there is that you mix together two shades of lipstick and a "finish" to make lipsticks that you try on to get your perfect shade. As you go you place the ones you like on this cute sheet to hold onto for the end to make your decision. Once you've tried on all the ones you want, you choose your shade or shades and corresponding scent to go with it. Then you get to watch them basically build the lipstick. You also name your lipsticks, which is silly and fun. Marquis and Tanya really made the experience. They were the perfect balance of knowledgeable and fun. They let us be silly as we tried on different shades (even ones we would never get), but were also so helpful in finding the shades that actually worked for your lips and skin. We each chose an everyday lipstick and more of a going out one, and they were honest and helpful with what would work for various occasions. It was really just such a fun time and I think that's mostly because of them! The cost is totally worth it for the experience and nice lipsticks. The two lipsticks were $120 and getting two it also came with what you need to prime your lips. If you only did one it's $60 and comes without the primers. The fiancé surprised me with a trip to the Lip Lab and we both had a ton of fun. I have a penchant for finding the newer locations; so off we went to the Brooklyn location (I've heard that SoHo is continuously busy). We were promptly greeted and sat down, then my lip lab mixer (lol) introduced herself to us and got to know me and what I was after. I decided on a true red with mint flavouring and I was not disappointed. She let me try all sorts of colours and combinations before we settled on my top two; a brown colour and a red. I got one lipstick made in front of me with my exact formula mixed for me. It's $60 for one lipstick, $80 for two. As you can see in the first picture I got a lot for my $60.00 USD. My fiancé loved the science behind the cosmetic manufacturing process and was a great photographer/videographer. We were made to feel comfortable, welcome and valued as customers. I've already booked my return for March! Oh! And I'm coming from Ottawa Ontario and it's definitely worth the trip to Brooklyn. read more
