Fortunately, my friend reserved a time for us! There were so many walk ins (overheard it was ~20min wait time for walk ins) early in the morning, around 11:30AM on a weekend. The entire experience was really fun and informative. Big shout out to Joanna who was super friendly and helpful! Very knowledgeable and I could tell she genuinely loves what she does and was eager to help us. She helped us every step of the way, from picking a base scent to giving us many options to explore with the base scent. It was definitely a treat for myself. It was ~$80 per person, $20 more for intensifying the perfume smell, and $45 for the solid palette (the base + 2 scents). It was an absolute steal with their promotion today! They had other promo items such as body wash, shampoo, diffusers, etc that were on sale today. I'm very happy with the options and loved the outcome of my special perfume! Crossed this off my bucket list!
Came by on a Sunday afternoon for my boyfriend's birthday. The space is very clean and bright, and you immediately smell all the delicious perfumes. You start by picking a base, and I liked that they include info about the creators and their well-known perfumes. Then you work with an employee who asks what you like and don't like, and they mix a few combinations for you to smell on paper. Definitely step outside because the air inside is so full of scents it's hard to tell what you're smelling. Once you narrow down to 3-4 favorites, they're tested on your skin and you select your perfume. The final step is making your bottle and naming it. Employees were very kind & helpful. I believe Kate was who helped us and she was great! Overall, it's a fun experience! A bit pricey ($85 for 50mL + tip), but I love my everyday scent and can't wait to keep wearing it.
It was a cool experience over all but I was expecting something more high level. The whole thing took 30mins. You choose a base scent but you choose from pre made combinations and there are about 10 different options. Then you choose a layer which, again, are premade combinations based off what you tell your guide you like. After you choose one base and one layer, they add them together and you're done. It came up to $103 after tax and tip. It was okay for what it was but I probably wouldn't do another one.
I brought my daughter here for her 18th birthday. She thoroughly enjoyed it, and major plus, so did I. We had an appointment but it wasn't busy so I am sure we would've been fine without one. But the staff were very kind and greeted us. I definitely asked our "chemist" his name and totally forgot. So he's in one of the pictures. He was so patient, educated us on a lot and overall made the experience special. It's been over a week perfume smells amazing! Can't wait to return for my spring/ summer scents.

Interesting experience. Full processing of your nose... so be prepare! Take your allergy meds. Result - your unique scent and walk out with a pretty bottle. I went on my bday and wanted to recreate a scent that was sadly discontinued. Worked with Seth, he was amazing! He level set and let me know - "it's quite challenging to replicate the exact scent, but can try to get as close to it as possible". He guided me through the process, selecting a base and then adding top notes to it.... Side note, it can get overwhelming. The variation and other customers' also testing - be sure to walk outside for a break and reset your nose. Although I couldn't replicate my precious Flower Market, the scent created was pretty good - fruity floral. You end with "creating a unique name" for your scent. This is where I didn't check the spelling... lol. I wrote out the name "Bklynmoi" ... didn't realize til I got home, there was a typo. It's ok, no one will see it but me. Be Sure To Check The Spelling! Great for 'girls date' experience.

He is great at exposing the notes and asking questions to help understand what you want. I left with an amazing new scent for spring and I can't wait to come back on my next NYC vacation- it's so fun having a fragrance as a souvenir of my trip.
This is the place for fragrance lovers who love wearing unique scents. Allergy /scents sensitivity warning- it's quite overwhelming so keep that in mind. The staff advises to take little breaks and step outside the store for fresh air. At the time my friend and I visited it was just 2 of us in the store but closer to the end of our appointment 2 other people came in. Our scentologist Dalton was so knowledgeable and patient and made the experience even more fun with his gentle humor. I was honestly losing track of all the scents I was sampling but he kept track of my likes and dislikes and made great suggestions to help me decide on my final perfume. I made a perfume and my friend made a scented body lotion. They also have a solid perfume option in a really nice palette that would be great for travel. Walk-ins will be accommodated depending on capacity so it's best to make an appointment especially on weekends. This would make for a great date or couples activity but equally enjoyable as a solo trip.
I promised my partner a custom perfume for Christmas and six months later we finally got around to making it. Olfactory is a fun experience where you get to try different scents and then work with the scent scientists to add other notes to their selection of base fragrances to make one your own. My partner and I had a great time trying the different fragrances and honestly as a super smeller- the whole experience was a bit overwhelming for me. We were really satisfied with the level of service and the scent we made and its great to have the opportunity to think back on the experience each time he wears the scent.
Our experience was awesome! They take walk-ins if they aren't too busy, but we made an appointment online about a week before we went. The whole experience takes about 30-40 min. You first choose a base scent from their fragrance wall and then you are paired with someone to help you create your custom fragrance. It's best to know what scents you like and don't like to know what combinations to try, unless you want something completely different than what you normally wear. Either way they are patient and give you the time to ask questions before you make a final decision. Molly made our time even better. She was welcoming & knowledgeable in helping us find the perfect scent for our wedding.
My matron of honors and maid of honors took me here as one of my birthday surprises. I am obsessed with perfume. I had a great time and the perfume I created literally last all day. They allow you to create a name for your fragrance and choose a color for your fragrance bottle. The best part is that you can re order the scent you created . I'm not sure about the cost as my girls covered my cost and I did not see the bill . This is a perfect spot for a date night or to hang with your girls . The only downside is that they do not have a bathroom
I dropped in without an appointment and although they were busy still found a way to see me. Miles was wonderful, extremely knowledgeable about scents and fragrances, friendly and kind. I'll definitely be back with my friends! Great experience and I got a new perfume custom to me. read more

My best friend and I were looking for things to do in the city and I came across Olfactory as an option. The idea of creating your own custom perfume was so cute to me, and it seemed like a great useful keepsake from the trip! You're able to make reservations online I believe, but since we were going on a Monday, we decided to keep our schedule flexible and do a walk-in when we were ready to stop by. REALLY strong scents when you go inside, almost the entire time actually! The staff greeted us immediately to see if we had a reservation and since we didn't, they walked us through what the process would be like. You first pick out your base scent - there are quite a few to choose from, and I had to eventually step outside to distinguish between the smells a little bit better. After you pick your base scent, you let your staff know what you liked about it, and also scents you generally are adverse to. They then mix together a few combinations and have you once again pick your top 3-4. They then put those combinations onto your skin so you can smell how your own scent mixes with the perfumes. It was definitely hard for me and my bestie to decide, maybe we took a bit longer than most people would! I do wish they had something to help cleanse our noses from all the different scents. I also wish they gave us wipes at the end because we had 4 different perfumes on our arms from the tests! At the end, you get to pick your color for your bottle as well as name it! You only get 9 letters so definitely think ahead! read more

Torn between a three or four star rating for my experience. This is more of a 3.5 star review. It was one of my best friend's first time in NYC and I thought how fun will it be to create our own fragrances? It's not like we have this in our hometown. Making a reservation is available but I figured we'd be okay as walk-ins especially on a weekday. Upon walking in, we were greeted and felt welcome. Our 'scent specialist' led us to the wall where there's about 11 base scents to smell and pick one that suits our liking. My friend EASILY was able to choose quite a few that she loved. I, however, struggled. Nothing stood out to me. It was either way too light where I can't smell it or way too strong and masculine. I love light florals, beachy, clean/fresh and none of the base scents were any of that. In the end, I settled for "Rae" (smells mainly citrus?) as my base while my friend choose "Reed." After choosing our base, our scent specialist started adding different drops of other scents they believe you'll like on top of your base scent. They combined plenty of different options (like over five different combos). I ended up choosing a mix of hydrangea, geranium and lilac. Sounds good to me...hey, remember I like fresh, light florals. Sadly, even with all the scents of florals mixed in my finished bottle, I ended up only mainly smelling the citrus from my base scent. This was a cool experience but left disappointed. You're essentially mixing pre-designed perfumes/scents together to make "your" blend, you're not creating a perfume totally from scratch. I've read some reviews about weak staying power. I also have a friend who made her own bottle before and also said the same thing. However, I can smell my freakin "Rae" headache inducing scent HOURSSSS later. Go figure, right? The total was about $93 and that's tax included for a 1.7 fl oz. bottle. read more

Omg. I LOVE this place!! I found out about it thought Tik Tok and I just HAD to go!! We worked with Seth who was amazing!! He was so knowledgeable with what scents would work well with each other. I'm definitely coming back!! Here is a tip: They will give you three scents to choose from at the end. I would recommend having them write down what each scent was before you leave. I choose whatever was put on my left hand (which I love) but whatever it was that was on my right hand, stood all day long and now I will never know what combo was created!! (they do save the perfume you purchase in the computer for you to repurchase if you want for next time. ) read more
Olfactory provides you with a unique experience to create a personalized fragrance based on your favorite scents. You pick a base fragrance and continue to build upon it with help from a knowledgeable scentologist. Our scentologist Seth was extremely helpful, thorough and kind. He worked one on one with me to craft the perfect fragrance. The process is relatively quick, 20-30 min, but is definitely a memorable experience. I would recommend! read more
Sunday 11/24 MY 33rd Birthday: I absolutely LOVEEE MY PERFUME. I am glad I made this my bday solo experience. Luke greeted me and paired me with Jodie. You choose your notes and customize the scents to your liking. You can't take apart scents by themselves they come in pre made scent groups that you combine and make your own. Aja took my photos, most appreciated. I got there around 6:30 and was able to create my fragrance in 30 mins. It was a little delayed because my card locked and declined EMBARRASSING. All because I was a Facebook shopping days before and I was tapping my phone all day on my birthday the bank was like WHOOOAA. The delay caused me to leave at 7:15 so sad cause they close at 7 but the staff was so nice and understanding. Anyways, Chase sent the fraud check text. I responded that it's me making these purchases and I took my perfume and headed on home. I do want to go back and get my perfume and the lotion version. I didn't have time to do that on my birthday because like I said they were closing soon. read more
The staff might be the best part of this experience I very much like the idea of creating your own fragrance however I do believe there are a lack of combinations of scents I expected more depth more scent options. After finding a scent you like you have a banner option for your bottle and you get to put a name on it after choosing banner color I would've like to see more bottle designs Perhaps more bottle options as well. All in all it's good for first timers I just don't think I would return read more

Came to the Nolita location with a few friends and had an amazing experience! Dayton was super knowledgeable and patient with us. I had a really enjoyable and positive perfume customization experience at Olfactory NYC. Luke was an absolute gem throughout the entire process. His kindness, knowledge, and genuine question made my experience positive. From the moment I stepped into the store, Luke greeted me and he listened attentively as I described my reason for my visit (first time mom wanting to create a fragrance that reminded me of my child) and asked me scents I wore and what notes I enjoyed. Luke created various scents and listened to what I liked. Luke explained the significance of custom notes and guided me through the choices. His kindness and chill vibe fostered a great conversation (he even asked me questions about my daughter, lol). Honestly, I am more than happy with the final result! He got my vibe pretty spot on and it was nice for someone to listen even if I was unsure at the beginning. He made this experience encouraging and approachable. If you're seeking a one-of-a-kind perfume customization experience, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting. Came here on a tuesday afternoon with my bf. We made a 3pm reservation but showed up at 1:30. Due to us coming from NJ, traffic, and wanting to find parking, we headed here early. We were able to be served quickly despite that. It was one other couple there but as we went through the experice it got crowded. We started off by smelling 9 undernotes, and were told to pick our top 2-4. I picked Lulu and my bf picked Hunter. We the sat at the bar where our nice person we worked with (forgot his name but he had a nose Piercing). He told us he will pair different scents with our perfume and we can choose 4 we like. Once we did that, we were told to go outside and try 4 scents on our skin. They did smell different on our skin than on the paper. After we chose our favorite he mixed them. We were then old to name our scent but could only use 9 characters or less. This was very hard, maybe the hardest part lol. The experience lasted about less than 30 min. I had a lot of fun. It was $85 per perfume and we each made 1 and gave a $20 tip. It was a good experience for $200. read more
AMAZING!!! Not sure about bathrooms, parking is street parking. Wonderful experience! Very involved and knowledgeable staff! Very friendly and helpful and I was nervous the process would have been overwhelming with too many scents but they broke it into three very palatable steps! First, you pick a base. They have about 6 bases to chose from and three seasonal specials. They remind you this base is meant to be built on. For instance I got the Hunter (vanilla ambrette and cedar wood) I thought it was a bit sweet but I loved the undertones of the smell. They said that was perfect for the second step. So the second step they talk to you about your favorite smells and what you typically like. I gave her a faint idea, that I like musky, earthy, and crisp florals. She suggested citrus too. Our girl was so nice and it seemed like she had worked there for years! She had so many great suggestions and patiently walked us through each step. So the second step is building. She adds a drop to about 6-9 strips, and your base to each. Let's each breathe and talks to you about each scent and what the smell resembles (an earthy summer scent). She tells you to not re-smell any until the end because it will ruin how you interpret each smell. The last step is choosing your favorite 3-4 and put them on your skin, then you walk outside and smell them. It is wild! The ones I thought I loved actually weren't my favorite. It definitely changed the smell. I LOVE mine so much I also purchased the lotion that had my scent in it too! It was great they also have the option to get the body wash with your scent. Amazing experience and so personal and fun! They have a back room for private parties and I just think it would be the best! So fun and personable and a gift you can keep for so long! I love my perfume and it's so fun to show everyone! read more

I am lucky enough to have a scent snob boyfriend, so on our latest NY trip we just knew we had to do something perfume-y. Olfactory NYC came recommended from a friend and, knowing that dear BF and I are always looking for fragrances with specific notes, we knew we had to give it a shot. The way it works is that you come in for your appointment and are greeted by the Olfactory team, who direct you toward a wall of perfume "bases," both perennial and seasonal. These are excellent and developed by noses behind your favorite perfumes (the guy behind my base did one of my favorite designer fragrances) -- I liked all the ones I smelled so it was a pretty tough sell between them. Eventually you pick a base and move along to customizing your scent. Next, Seth from Olfactory sat down with us to get a feel of what we were looking for in a fragrance. He was very knowledgeable in dealing with BF's elevated fragrance tastes and patient in dealing with my "uh, IDK, I like flowers" fragrance tastes. After getting a feel for what we were both looking for, Seth put forward a bunch of potential combinations of notes on top of our selected bases, walking us through the notes and potential for each combination. Seth was super helpful in being a thought partner in getting us to narrow down maybe ~10 scent combinations to 3-4 finalists, which we then skin tested, aligning on a final scent that we really loved. We then got the final scent bottled and got to pick the look of our bottle and the name of the perfume on the label (which we outsourced to ChatGPT). Overall for $85 plus tax / tip / etc., we felt like the full bottle of a fragrance that had all the notes we were looking for was so worth it. Huge thank you to Seth who made this experience so fun and so chill with his awesome energy, and whose knowledge made this experience as smooth as possible (reminders not to put the perfume directly onto my nose help lol). Highly recommend Olfactory if you're a pickly perfume lover and looking for something specific, or even if you're just getting started with perfumes and want to get the "gist" of how a perfume is built up through different notes and accords :) read more

I picked this spot for me and my broke BFF aka my 10 year old daughter, to have a date. We attended on a week night and there was a fair amount of traffic to my suprise. I did make reservations, so that secured my spot. Overall, the experience was nice. Something different to do. I would like to say customer service was great all the way around, BUT one young lady was stand offish and dismissive. I did not catch her name; young, white, curly hair, really cute but stank attitude. Luckily, Asia, another attendant, noticed the awkward interaction and swooped in and took care of us, and made sure we enjoyed the experience. So, while you do not actually make your own perfume, the concept is really cute. You pick a base fragrance, and then you tell your attendant will ask you about under notes you like. Then you will blind test up to like seven notes. Then they take your top picks and make I believe 3 or 4 sents....and you pick from one of them. After you pick your sent, you chose a custom name for your new fragrance and a color strip for it to be printed on. While many may say it's pricey, I found it reasonable. For two 3.2 oz fragrances with tip came out to $197. If you can, you should give it a try. read more

Olafactory was on my list of places to visit during my birthday celebrations and i'm so happy I finally got to visit! I made a reservation online for my bf and I and was able to walk right in. I thought it was by reservation only but there were a couple people that walked in. I guess it depends on how busy it is. The staff was super friendly and attended to us right away. Just note, there are two locations. The Mott St. location is the main one. It is a bit small so keep that in mind. The staff said the other location is bigger. Make sure you double check the location you make your reservation at! You start off by smelling all the perfumes on the wall and picking which ones you like the most. After that, the staff combines different scents to see which ones you like the most. They dab the scents of the finalist on your arm and hands and tell you to go outside so you can smell the scent better. Once you pick the winner, the staff puts it in a bottle and then you pick a name. Since I just turned 30, I named it "This is 30." They packaged the bottles nicely in tissue paper, put it in our bags and we were done within an hour! After tax and tip, we spent around $195 for two scents. My boyfriend and I are enjoying our personalized scents. Thank you Olafactory! read more
This was such a fun experience I was honestly so impressed. I was truly shocked (in a good way) about the value of the product and experience for the price we paid, it was really amazing. I loved being able to create my perfect fragrance. The staff was really knowledgeable and that really made the whole thing so much better, since they guide you through the entire process. It was since a fun girls day out activity. The shop is beautiful and I really appreciate how nicely they packaged my custom bottle of perfume. My best friend and I go on bestie dates a few times a year. I was visiting New York which overlapped with her month-long stay there and she surprised me with an appointment at Olfactory NYC. We've been searching for a place like this where you can create custom perfume/fragrance ever since we saw this on a reality dating show idea! Olfactory is such a fun experience where you get to try all these different scents to create a custom fragrance and name it. It did get a little overwhelming with the scents at one point where it was getting hard to smell the difference because your nose is being used so much. I appreciated that they did have you also try it on your arm because every person has a natural scent so it smells different on you than just sprayed on a paper. It's a really fun experience and makes for an awesome date idea! I highly recommend it. The hardest part was coming up with a name at the end. read more

Smell like the idealized version of yourself with customized fragrances that don't smell cheap. I visited Olfactory as part of a team building experience and we had the space all to ourselves, complete with wine and a cheese board. While we could've gone through the fragrance creating process (which you can also do online only or via an at-home kit) very quickly, taking our time and letting the scents sit on our wrists before moving forward with each stage was fun and made for a very low stress, chill activity. I could easily see this being a fun date or even a way to treat yourself. There was a whole wall of scents but the options still felt limited to me. I think I was after a particular fragrance combo that I couldn't quite emulate here-- it would be cool if they could help us create scents inspired by popular perfumes already on the market. I didn't receive much guidance on that front. I still came away with a scent I like and loved customizing the name, which was printed on a label for the bottle. All in all this was a unique concept executed quite well, in an intimate and bright space perfect for small groups. At $85 per fragrance, the price feels reasonable for this custom experience. read more
Such a fun experience! It may seem a bit pricey at first however, I felt as if it was worth it based on the experience and product you receive. I enjoyed the experience and being able to test the scents on your skin. They have so many options to choose from and the staff is great in helping you narrow it down based on your preferences but also showing you different options if you are open to it. The shop itself had many photo opportunities however did get a bit busy/crowded. Unfortunately, I felt as if my scent smelled differently than what I originally smelled with the testers but that's okay. I've worn it a few times and feel as if the scent has lasted pretty well. read more

I visited Olfactory this past weekend for a girl's day out. I had little to no expectation of what it would be like to customize your own bottle. I would say this was a nice, pleasant surprise. We started by smelling all the base notes which got pretty overwhelming halfway through. You can always step outside to recalibrate the nose. I wish there was some welcome instructions and tips on what to look out for. I felt like I was a blind duck using my overloaded sensory cues to make a decision. After my millionth sniff of the testers, I decided to go with the Ashton base scent. After that, a staff asked what kind of scents I usually like, so I said "clean." They would then concoct 9 different combos with your base scent. There were a few unique and interesting scents. In the end, you get to choose your top four scents to spray on your skin. I had a hard time choosing my final pick since my top four were all so different in their own ways. I think what helped me decide, was 1) how well the scent smells on my skin, and 2) if the scent changes as time progress. After you have chosen, they mix and bottle up your fragrance and there you can customize the color of your label and choose your scent name. The whole in-store process took about one hour and a half, from entering the door to leaving the door with my final product. It's not a cheap experience, but it was fun to engage my olfactory senses. read more
I came here during my birthday weekend. I was trying to look for different activities to do in NYC with my friends. We all had a lot of fun! The experience felt personal and the girl who worked with us was so sweet. She even gave us recommendations for local restaurants and stores while she was helping us. I'd say the only downside is that after a little while everything starts to smell the same. Even after you go outside it's just like at one point your nose can't take it anymore lol. I had the pleasure of working with Seth yesterday. This was an amazing adventure. Seth is personable, professional and patient. I arrived at the shop with my own ideas and inspirations, which he was accepting and appreciative of. He listened respectively. He encouraged me to express myself. I came away with two beautiful bottles of cologne. One for me and one for my boyfriend. My special formula is now on file for my future needs. Seth matched the bottle colour to my irises and affixed a beautiful label. My personal scent is labelled, "I Am". Seth is a valuable asset to the groovy experience which is Olfactory of Mott Street. Hi Martina! Yes! All of our fragrances are eau de parfums, which means they will last on the skin around 8 hours.
