EVERYONE there has been helpful and friendly. It's a comfortable place for care. I found my home for all my eye care.

Probably capable for less serious eye issues; Dr. Carim too impatient with less routine procedures…read more Plus Side: He exceeded others in Reading area in seeing the problem, knows the graduated levels of treatment, and is familiar with them. Developed a blind spot in one eye - neither Eyeland optometrist nor ophthalmologist at Campanella & Pearah could ID the cause. Dr. Carim saw a hole in the retina and immediately injected a bubble to pin it back before laser affixation. Bubble was augmented once. Negatives: Impatience and questionable judgment in my estimation. After the proscribed days of waiting (and head positioning to optimize the bubble's effect), saw him again. Dr. Carim stated that the retina was not all the way back but decided to proceed with the laser procedure (maybe he expected it would get no better, but he didn't go for more days despite feeling that could help). What started as a quick laser attachment procedure turned into a long laser light show and torture session as he grew increasingly frustrated with the retina's remaining detached area. Another bubble. Days later, the blind spot was expanding into the center of my vision. The next step was the more "intense" step of cryogenic attachment. Apart from the glorious feeling of poking multiple instruments into my eyeball and freezing it, my situation ultimately became a full retinal detachment. In this timeframe Dr. Carim noted that my retina had at least three holes that allowed fluid to get behind it. This could have been the result of multiple laser burn-throughs from my military service, or maybe his premature laser attachment action. Blind in one eye now, I went to Dr. David Fisher in Philadelphia (3 locations for him), who laid out my options. A vitrectomy (removal of all fluid, pin the retina back) was performed. Vision in that eye is hazy, non-correctable to anywhere near what it was, and depth perception is off from other eye - the resultant of full retinal detachment.

All-around good place for eye exams; I did not purchase eyewear…read more First routine eye exam in three years to get more contacts. Dominic Orlando, O.D. was knowledgeable and up to date. Having had a retinal detachment and vitrectomy to reattach, I was looking for 'above average' in the optometry department and he seems to have it (despite coming from Atlanta Falcon territory). He understood the critical timeframe involved in detachments and the issues with balancing the power despite the loss of vision. Seems to know more about how other health factors play into vision, and he might surprise you by making connections you didn't know existed. Austin, who first fielded my call, was pretty sharp too, and that stood out in my calls to four in-network optometrists. However, his handling of an insurance/financial issue took some of the shine off the experience. Customer Service: They make an effort to answer calls quickly and by a real person. Criticisms: First, the pre-screen was done with a tech who was probably a long-term smoker in a small, small closed-door room. Second, my astigmatism may have been measured well by the new machine (new to me) in the pre-screening, but Dr. Orlando's vertical and horizontal lines ("which ones appear darker?") did not fill me with confidence as my previous screenings had a much finer breakdown (like every 15) of the 360 degree continuum. [Ok, going to get something off my chest here, so it may be time to stop reading for all but the most thorough reviewers....] Third, a little bait-n-switch seems to be going on. Despite a pre-call to my insurance ("routine eye exams for contacts or eyeglasses are 100% covered"), and a second call to AB to confirm that this was a routine eye exam without other charges, an assessment of $34 out-of-pocket was added at the end to my $45 covered eye exam for "fitting." When asked about this surprise billing, Austin stated that my "INSURANCE required this" (why? insurance isn't getting any money from this), even though no "fitting" was done. I didn't even buy or try out contacts. An extra charge for contacts is not unheard of - one less-service-oriented Wyo office stated up front that an additional $75-$150 charge was coming, depending on "how the doctor feels" - is that how much effort he "feels" he put in, or how much he "feels" he can soak the patient for? But in this case NOTHING different from a routine exam was done. This could be an ethereal 'doctor evaluation' based on the measurements, but that need only be done for new contact wearers, or once a decade, if that. He could have spent no more than a few seconds on any such 'evaluation' based on my appointment and I know they don't charge customers who are paying out of pocket for that. It was not stated up front, and laying the blame on the insurance was a canard - a call to the insurance confirmed this, and they, of course, said PROVIDERS may have extra charges that are not "routine." Austin stated he'd need a call from my insurance stating that they didn't "require" this charge, which I had Lana-the-rep do while I was on the line. Even after that he said they "required" it; but given that I was right there with exact quotes, and willing to follow up with an appeal and complaint, if necessary, he wisely employed discretion and refunded the extra charge. Still, despite the argument I had with Austin on this subject, he stayed professional and kept me as a customer and my recommendation of AB to others.

This is the ABSOLUTE BEST practice for glaucoma patients…read more My husband needed an emergency appointment for high pressures in his eyes due to his glaucoma. He was given an appointment in short order. I was out of town for this appointment, however, Dr Michael Izzo called me on the phone during the appointment to include me in the conversation to go over everything including the need for surgery. He explained everything in an easy to understand manner for my husband and for me. He said the surgery would be scheduled for the following week when I would be home. The surgery went great. The aftercare has been amazing. Dr. Izzo is so caring about his patients. He makes sure that you understand everything that is going on with your eyes, he's very detailed in his examination and encourages questions and concerns! With my husband, who is 71, he explained why he should no longer be driving due the type and extent of his vision loss in a way that was not demeaning or harsh. My husband and I both appreciated the kind manner in which he did so. In short, he is an amazing doctor and we couldn't be happier with the care we received. As to the staff, they were professional, understanding and caring. Our appointments were made to accommodate our schedule regarding times and days. The staff in the back helping the doctors are just as amazing. We love this practice and would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone, definitely as 10/10 stars!
