Last month I realized I needed a haircut more then I have ever needed a haircut in my entire life…read more My hair had not been trimmed in several months, I had 6-month old half-grown out colour that had faded to the max, and I was *thisclose* to taking the razor to the whole thing ala. Britney. I am particular about my hair and about it looking good so I don't like to trust it to just anyone. Seeing as my hairstylist I have had since BIRTH is in Cole Harbour, I now live in the North end of Halifax with no car, and she is extremely hard to get an appointment with anyway, I decided it was high time to find a place in my own hood. I had noticed Flaunt salon open up a few months before (it opened mid-October 2010) because I walk by the old house it's located in every day after work (you can't miss that big, round window in the front!). It looked like a nice, fun place, plus, you can't beat a 5 minute walk from my apartment. So, I thought I would give it a try. Well, seriously I think I had the best haircut of my LIFE that day. Now, I really really needed a haircut so to be honest, ANY change to my style would probably have made me completely over-the-moon, but it was more than that. I was randomly paired up with Laurel and she was lovely - very friendly with a sunny personality - so I felt in good hands right from the beginning. I brought a picture to give her an idea of the kind of look I wanted and she made it look exactly like that! She gave me a great asymmetrical bob style with tons of layers, but kept it long enough that I could still pull at least the front back - you know, she actually LISTENED to me (which doesn't always happen at salons, am I right, other high-maintainence hair people?). The salon itself is small (I think only 5 chairs) and so it's quiet but also encourages conversation amongst patrons. There is an air of exclusivity to it - like you are at a place that requires you to make an appointment 6 months in advance and where you could easily shell out $200 for a cut. Now, don't get me wrong, this place is a tad pricey - I was actually surprised when she told me the total at the end of my appointment and it came to $57 before tip (so almost $70 total - eeps). However, to me it was worth it because she did a great job with my cut. Also, I don't necessarily mind paying a bit more money for the convenience and experienced stylists. Unfortunately I can't speak for how much a colour or other treatments would cost but I imagine they are not cheap either. One thing that I also found a tad odd was that they don't take credit cards (only debit, cash or cheque) so those of you on a budget and who like your plastic, be forewarned. Also keep in mind that they have more limited hours than other salons (the latest they are open is 8pm and that's only one or two nights a week I think...the other nights I believe it is 6pm) and they are limiting their hours even more over the summer, so book at least a week ahead. One thing is for sure about this place - you will definitely walk out of here with something to Flaunt!

Orla was great to discuss what I was looking for with my blow out. She "got me" and made awesome suggestions of what we could do. I would definitely go back the next time I'm in town and needed pretty hair.

I've been eye balling this place for months now. I've been to a similar concept blow dry salon in…read moreMontreal and was more than impressed with it. Hoping I'd have a similar experience here I booked an appointment. It seems difficult to get an appointment here on the weekends, so I was super excited when she told me there were spots open. I came in at 7 on a Saturday and gave the girl doing my hair a very simple instruction: I want curls but curls tend to fall out really easily with my hair. This is what I tell most of the stylists who do my hair and it seems to work well. She decided to do round brush curls initially. Which didn't work very well and was kind of painful as she had to de-tangle my hair multiple times, and there wasn't much curl in the end. She then asked if I wanted more curls in it. I said yes and she put some curling wand curls in it. It looked ok. It was $50 with a tip. Ouch... My hair fell out 10 minutes later and I ended up curling it myself and doing a much better job.

Wow, I'm totally thrilled. I'm way behind on writing reviews for places around town, but I'm all…read morehappy today and I decided to do this one. Why am I happy, you ask? 'cause I treated myself to a cut and style from the knowledgeable, personable Michael here. (I've visited Angela before and was happy, too!) And the day after the cut, I CANNOT stop running my hands through my hair. It feels and looks amazing. It doesn't tangle like it did, the split ends are gone, and no more ponytails (well, unless I want one) for another six months, at least! I can actually do something with this hairstyle other than "blowdry it and hope for the best". The deep conditioning treatment has turned my hair from straw to luscious. *rubs hair again* And it looked absolutely fabulous the day he did it, too... I went out with my new hair and felt more confident than I have in a while! I love this place. I'm going to be visiting twice a year, now. Note: the prices are a little expensive, but my hair grows verrrry slowly and is hard to handle. Therefore, I find it SO worth it to pay $75 for a cut that will last six months or more and the peace of mind that comes with not worrying about whether that cheap haircut place will ruin my hair for a year or more. If your hair grows super-fast and you change it up a lot, you might want to limit your visits to a treat. If your hair grows super-slowly and you want a style that will keep you happy for a while, maybe you'll want to visit this place too. :)

You feel like…read moreit's the first day of school in a brand new place...who do you trust? who do you sit with at lunch? who won't steal your lunch money? Ok, ok...maybe a bit of an exaggeration but for me, I was clueless as to where to go! Luckily, someone I know just recommended One Block and I called on a Tuesday, got in on a Thursday. Quick, easy and no hassle. Robyn was my stylist and I was slightly skeptical, as I am not what you might call "cool" or "hip" and from all the word of mouth reviews, this was the newest and hippest place to go! I explained to Robyn some of my ideas of what I wanted and she took that and ran (not with her scissors, don't worry!) She explained what she thinks would work best while incorporating my own request! That along with the amazing Aveda products and scalp massage created an amazing and relaxing time. I didn't think it was unreasonably priced, as you are there more for the EXPERIENCE than just a cut or colour. I have always gone to salons, so I expect to spend a certain amount, and not always is it worth it. This was most definitely worth it! The only thing that may be hard for some to swallow is the slightly "hipster" feel. They may be the coolest shop in town, but they still welcome you and make sure you enjoy yourself as well as having a great deal of pride in their work. As a walking billboard of their talents, they want everyone to be happy and look great! (they also are amazing at unique haircuts which include shaving and straight sharp lines...if you can pull it off!) Now that I know how great they are, I will for sure be back. And if you just recently had your stylist move or are looking for a new place, that is as cool and they are talented, then look no further!!
