Last month I realized I needed a haircut more then I have ever needed a haircut in my entire life…read more My hair had not been trimmed in several months, I had 6-month old half-grown out colour that had faded to the max, and I was *thisclose* to taking the razor to the whole thing ala. Britney. I am particular about my hair and about it looking good so I don't like to trust it to just anyone. Seeing as my hairstylist I have had since BIRTH is in Cole Harbour, I now live in the North end of Halifax with no car, and she is extremely hard to get an appointment with anyway, I decided it was high time to find a place in my own hood. I had noticed Flaunt salon open up a few months before (it opened mid-October 2010) because I walk by the old house it's located in every day after work (you can't miss that big, round window in the front!). It looked like a nice, fun place, plus, you can't beat a 5 minute walk from my apartment. So, I thought I would give it a try. Well, seriously I think I had the best haircut of my LIFE that day. Now, I really really needed a haircut so to be honest, ANY change to my style would probably have made me completely over-the-moon, but it was more than that. I was randomly paired up with Laurel and she was lovely - very friendly with a sunny personality - so I felt in good hands right from the beginning. I brought a picture to give her an idea of the kind of look I wanted and she made it look exactly like that! She gave me a great asymmetrical bob style with tons of layers, but kept it long enough that I could still pull at least the front back - you know, she actually LISTENED to me (which doesn't always happen at salons, am I right, other high-maintainence hair people?). The salon itself is small (I think only 5 chairs) and so it's quiet but also encourages conversation amongst patrons. There is an air of exclusivity to it - like you are at a place that requires you to make an appointment 6 months in advance and where you could easily shell out $200 for a cut. Now, don't get me wrong, this place is a tad pricey - I was actually surprised when she told me the total at the end of my appointment and it came to $57 before tip (so almost $70 total - eeps). However, to me it was worth it because she did a great job with my cut. Also, I don't necessarily mind paying a bit more money for the convenience and experienced stylists. Unfortunately I can't speak for how much a colour or other treatments would cost but I imagine they are not cheap either. One thing that I also found a tad odd was that they don't take credit cards (only debit, cash or cheque) so those of you on a budget and who like your plastic, be forewarned. Also keep in mind that they have more limited hours than other salons (the latest they are open is 8pm and that's only one or two nights a week I think...the other nights I believe it is 6pm) and they are limiting their hours even more over the summer, so book at least a week ahead. One thing is for sure about this place - you will definitely walk out of here with something to Flaunt!

However, as I get home less and less for visits, it seems appropriate to branch out into our city's hair services. Foxy Moon is a small salon located on Agricola, and its charismatic title drew me in for further inspection. Its a quaint little space, but fresh and well maintained. My entrance alloted for a prompt greeting, and the esthetician was more than happy to explain the jist of the salon offerings. With just 2 stylists and 1 esthetician, they seem to provide quality services at reasonable pricing. The esthetician introduced me to the stylists passing by-- everyone appeared friendly and professional. Cuts go for $35 and upwards, while coloring/ highlights average in at about $75(+), depending on your mane. Esthetic services run along the same lines; moderately priced services, and offering mainly the basics. (No massage or specialized facial services here.) I'm unsure if I'll make Foxy Moon my next hair destination. The friendly approach and well priced services provided appeal, but there wasn't anything particularly "stand out" here. This spot doesn't exactly scream salon suavé, but its a neat spot with a quiet confidence.

On occasion I find myself saying that I may be in the market for something when in fact I'm simply hoping to learn about their business. Oh, the dilemmas of a community detective... So, when I went into this hair shop today I found myself thinking - hey, maybe I do want foils or a buzz cut! I could get these things, right? "Of course" is the answer, so I ask the questions to find out costs and the like. Redmond (if I remember his name correctly) greeted me and was very friendly. He showed me a price list with very reasonable numbers, as well as a list of esthetic services. For a hair cut it's $40 and under! Hooray - great prices turn my crank. We talked about foils and that a half-head is usually recommended while a quarter head is simply for touch ups. As well, if you're looking for lash tinting or waxing - this place offers up the goods with comfortable price tags to match. The space was bright and clean, and I could definitely picture myself in one of the chairs, chatting away while getting my mop-top resculpted. With friendly stylists and a modern space, this place seems like a fantastic decision if you're looking to update your look!

The space is easy and simple; with only two stylists gracing the scene, it makes for a quiet and relaxed experience. My hair was in a crazy state when I first went in to see Brian. I had buzzed my head and my hair was in the midst of renegotiating itself around my melon. I had been giving myself some random snips, and really needed someone to assist the process. Brian was funny and helpful suggesting that I not take the scissors to myself again. I also had a single dread from a trip to Spain, and Brian assisted me with letting go by snipping it clear off. I had some nice chats with Brian and quite enjoyed my haircuts. I even went with some color at one point and it turned out well! The cuts are reasonably priced, and the service is attentive and genuine. I reckon that they only take cash or cheque so don't get caught with plastic in your hand! The space is sweet bright, and you'll definitely feel at ease when you take a seat in this simple boutique salon.

My hair dresser was named Georgia. She is Greek and unfortunately did not speak a word of English, however there was another stylist nearby to translate for me. Georgia was friendly in the little English that she knew. I requested choppy layers with just a bit being taken off the length, and was concerned my request would be lost in translation, but thankfully I ended up being really pleased. It was by far the best hair cut I've had in quite some time. She made my bangs look perfect, which is quite the feat considering I have a few monstrous cow licks and the layers she put in my hair were choppy and noticeable just as I requested. It was extremely flattering. I've been told that anyone educated on hair dressing in Europe has a heads up over anyone educated in Canada, and since Georgia did such a great job on my hair I'm inclined to agree. I can't remember how much it cost, but it was reasonable. I'd say $40-60. I'd definitely recommend Georgia for a good hair cut.
