After my old barber became wicked busy at every time of day, I decided to switch it up. An even stronger impetus was that Phat's is just around the corner from my new apartment. Less commuting, shorter waits and cheaper prices are going to beat out a hip decor and a beer while you wait. Down to the brass tacks though. Phat is a pro doing a quick, but well done cut and providing some great banter, whether it's with you or giving s#!t to regulars waiting in the handful of chairs along the wall. If there is a few people waiting when you come by, don't worry, as you won't be waiting long and you'll enjoy the show. The space may be a little rough around the edges, but this is a case function of form. Phat gets it done and at $17 for a cut ($16 if he forgets that he increased prices haha) you should be coming here to get your ears lowered. read more

Really crappy barber. If you want a cheap and inconsistent cut go to this guy. He talks too much and doesn't focus on providing his clients the best service. He charges $20 a cut and it's just not worth it. The owner has an attention span of a child, he stops while cutting your hair to small talk with anyone coming into shop for no apparent reason. I go to a barber expecting a relaxing and accommodating experience to leave satisfied with a solid haircut and tbh you will not be getting any of that at this place. Never again for me and I wouldn't recommend this place unless you want to be overcharged for a mediocre cut and poor service. read more

Guys have it easy when it comes to hair. Phat's Barber Shop is a perfect example. It's an old school type of place that you would see in an old movie. There is no booking appointments, simply park yourself in a waiting chair, grab an old magazine and wait. I'm sure it's not the greatest haircut, but in the last 10 years no one should demand a great haircut. Well unless you want to really pay for it. This decade has been all about short hair or messy hair. Short hair is simple. Start the electric razor, apply to head and move it around until there is little hair left. Messy hair is also simple. Go to barber shop, have barber hack away at your hair. Later apply styling gel and wait for a taxi to take you to a bar. Guys have it easy when it comes to hair. read more

I took my husband to Phat's for the first time this evening, for a haircut. He has tight curly locks that need a bit of extra effort to get just right! We arrived at Phat's at 7:27pm, and the place closes at 7pm. Phat noticed us pull up and about to pull away. He hustled to the door, opened it and waved us in. This earned the first 2 stars. Phat took his time, made us laugh, only needed to ask a few questions to complete a good short cut and we were impressed with out having to point out any spots that were not to our (my) satisfaction! This earned him another 2 stars! Phat has some funny signs up on his mirrors, remembers names and who people are, makes just enough great conversation and truly makes you feel important while you are there. Another 2 stars. Oh wait, I can only give 5... From a female perspective, the back wall could use some cleaning and organizing, but as my husband pointed out, this is a men's barber shop and he didn't even notice. We were both extremely satisfied with our experience, this will now be his regular barber shop and we gladly recommend Phat's! Tip well. He earns it! read more

So... I have the side of my head shaved. Pretty cool, I know! But what I didn't realize is that hair grows quickly (I've never had my hair that short before, so it's all new to me!)... I also didn't feel like spending a whole lot of money to get it shaved by my hair stylist. So my little brother recommended that I just walk up the street and go see Phat, and I thought, why not? He's awesome. He knows every single customer by name (like he knew who my brother was and my brother does not go there regularly, he likes his shaggy look). Anyway, he did an awesome job with my hair.. and guess what? It only cost $8.00 for my side to be shaved. Sweet! read more

Phat's assistant barber is always very polite. Phat himself is always funny and polite. However, there were two guys sitting by the window while I was having my haircut having a long conversation and kind of blared (whatever they were saying) into my ear...within a meter. One of my favourite places to get my hair cut in HRM ... not because there is anything particularly outstanding about the cut, but because Phat never fails to entertain. In a day and age where conversation seems to be a dying art among barbers, Phat is an artist from the old school ... you just never know what he might say next. Tried Phat's shop as the wait for my old barber was getting crazy and there was no slow time of day (Same one as Murray W. on 11/27/2013). Phat is a decent cutter. Maybe not the very best but quite acceptable and you can see that he does take care in what he does. The décor is ....errr...ahhh....unique. But you're there for a haircut, not to study furniture. He's awesome as he has taken the time to learn my name, about me, and always knows exactly how I want my hair cut. He is ALWAYS consistent and ensures your hair is cut to perfection. I've come to learn that Phat knows one hair cut, doesn't know modern styles and takes poor direction. I kept giving him chances because I figured maybe I just was giving poor instructions plus he had a good sense of humor sometimes and seemed like a nice guy....not always the case I learned. The last time I went to Phat's, the shop was empty yet I sat and waited for 20 minutes while he talked on the phone...I related this experience to a co-worker who shared with me that Phat once made him wait while he swept the entire shop before serving him. When I finally got in the seat, he hastily gave me a trim - I then asked him to trim my beard....which he proceeded to do with the hair clippers he uses for everything (scissors are not a tool in his arsenal apparently) where he hastily proceeded to shave my neck which lead to a terribly infected beard rash which I had to get medication for. It's been months now and it still hasn't healed. read more
