You know the theory of dating up and dating down? That whole, reacher/settler thing in…read morerelationships? Well, sometimes I apply that to the businesses I support. For example, places like the Brooklyn Warehouse and Two If By Sea, make me feel like I'm becoming cooler just by association. Standing outside of Willy's waiting for poutine while its still daylight out? Still awesome, but yet, I draw just a wee bit of shame from it all. I'm adding haircuts at Saint Lou's to the 'dating up' column of local stops that I make. I've had a long love affair with my go-to hair place but c'mon...at a certain point a guy needs to admit that he can't afford $55 (with tip) every three weeks. So, when faced with the scary choice of new hair help, I decided to take a leap of faith and go with the one that all the cool kids are talking about. A wee space in the Historic Properties, Saint Lou's oozes cool factor. A gorgeous guitar and rotary phone share one wall, black-and-whites of Elvis in a barber chair and vintage gear hang on the other, and a single chair sits in the middle of it all. The main man himself, Rob, is bringing barber back with these sweet digs that have tourists and locals alike stopping to take pictures. No really - that happened! Now, a couple of things: 1) It's cash-only so come prepared. If you don't? Well, no big deal actually. Rob insisted I get my cut before running off to find a working ATM which was really helpful especially since the one in Historic Properties is usually bunk. 2) There are no appointments. "What? No appointments? That's crazy talk!" Yes. At first I would have agreed with you. But hey - no appointments means you can just pop in whenever...and that's actually pretty awesome. I showed up, I sat down, I left looking awesome. It was that easy. 3) While Saint Lou's definitely goes for the barber vibe (and succeeds), let's get serious and remember that Rob spent five years at Spirit Spa and the past three years working in Australia. This isn't just a buzzcut destination. You're working with a pro. 4) Yes - the rumours are true. Cuts at Saint Lou's ($27 for a full deal, but there are options for quick clean-ups in between cuts) come with a drip coffee from Two If By Sea down the hall or a beer if you feel so inclined. Which. Um. You obviously should. This one's a winner, gents!

All cleaned up and a cool parting gift. Happy 6th anniversary.

I've got to admit when I first came across the name Brewery Barber, I was sightly more than intrigued. I decided to call ahead. I should have figured the place was in the old brewery near the waterfront by the name. Close enough to where I was in the south end and if I can get a cut and a beard trim for twenty dollars I figured I would give them a try. This guys' shop was clean and simple and the barber looked close to my Dad's age so I figured he had done a few cuts in his life and knew what he was doing. Been a while since I'd seen a one man operation and I liked the small town feel of the place right away. As luck would have it, there was no wait. A quick assessment and off we went. Never seen anybody handle a clipper like that before. The guy said he started out back in the seventies and that I can believe. Twenty or so minutes later and everything was clean at the edges and looked just great. Just what I was looking for. I wasn't aware he didn't have a debit terminal, but there was an ATM in the restaurant across the hall... problem solved. Good banter and a real trip down memory lane. His shop was playing a radio station from Ohio that featured nothing but music from the sixteens and seventies. It was just like spending Saturday night with my folks. I really enjoyed this place and wish I could bring my Dad next time. read more

Some people choose a barbershop because it's a 'cool place'. Unfortunately, the retro decor, free beer and staff with great beards at other Halifax barbershops tend to hide the fact that what a person really should be getting from a barbershop is a top notch haircut. And, when it comes to getting the best haircut in Halifax, there's only one place to go. Eoin, the owner and sole barber at the Brewery Barber has 4 decades of experience and 50,000+ men's haircuts under his belt. He's a master of the works - a hair physicist, if you will. Every move he makes on hair is purposeful, careful, and precise. Simply put, Eoin knows exactly what he's doing with with his clients' hair. He gives a great haircut every time. When I first came to Eoin, I had a 6-month old shaggy mop on my head and he turned it into a work of contemporary art for just $20. The barbershop itself is no frills - no retro decor, no beer, and Eoin doesn't sport a cool beard (in fact he doesn't have a strand of hair on his head). However, what the Brewery Barber does offer is a real high quality haircut. ***Note to all shaggy mop heads out there - Eoin will take care of you, but do him and yourself a favour and don't let your hair get that disheveled a second time around. read more

This is truly the best barber in Halifax! Eoin has been cutting my hair for years. He is conveniently located off of Lower Water St in the Brewery Market or you can cross through the Courtyard off of Salter St. Prices are worth the care and work that Eoin puts in to accommodate the cut you want. And if you love to talk, Eoin is right there with you. Atmosphere friendly and inviting. Don't be fooled by the music you hear. No, you didn't transport back to the 60's or 70's. No, Eoin had a career in radio long before doing the gig he's doing now and really loves to share his knowledge about the tunes, artists and the crazy good announers. I love coming here! Trust me on this, you will not be disappointed by the cut he does for you. Book an appointment online today at Brewery Barber. This is a service I love. Fast and convenient. read more

Best cut. No gimmicks, just fast efficient friendly service. The barber doesn't try and up sell his own products and will give cheap fix remedy's. I love the location in the brewery. Best of all this barber offers free neck touch ups between your appointments. I have never had someone provide this service and genuinely appreciate it when I have a meeting and do not require a full cut. Tip, just tell him what you like and let him work his magic. Barbers know best, he has converted me from my previous style to something that is definitely more suiting and for that I am grateful. Thank you read more

Eoin has been my barber for over 12 years even before he moved to the Brewery Market. As a veteran I like to have my hair cut in a particular way and Eoin always does a fantastic job. He is very competent and takes his time to get things right for me. While waiting for my appointment I have noticed that he treats his other customers with the same care. The scheduling system is easy to use and efficient. I have and would recommend the Brewery Barber to many of my friends and famly. read more

Brian's makes it an enjoyable experience. The place has grown in popularity over the years. When I started going back about 8 years ago, it was just Brian and one other hairdresser. He's since grown to include another 3 employees and the shop has become quite popular. Brian himself is a nice guy and as someone below as mentioned, he's a "wizard with scissors". He will take time to cut your hair, however when it get's busy, he can pick up the pace to the point where on one particular day, he cut all of my hair in about 3 minutes. And he did a nice job too! Because the place is so popular, be prepared to wait at least 15-20 minutes at peak times (Saturday Morning-Afternoon) for someone. It is quiet during the off hours (Most mornings, early afternoon) Compared to the other shops in Sackville, I like the one-on-one feel of this place. All of the staff know me by name, are very friendly and we have good chats while they clip away. Pricing is on par with most barber ships and hairdressers. A men's cut with a tip costs about $20, which is a reasonable price. And Brian has only raised the price once in the 8 years I've been going here. Overall, Brian's is a great barbershop and I wouldn't go anywhere else.
