My barber (Josh) recently moved to this shop and I followed him to it. The cut was great, as usual, and the shop itself had a pretty cool vibe to it. In all, great cut, good price and good location. I'll be going back (at least as long as Josh is there). read more

Terrible crooked beard trim and head buzz cut with trimmers. 25 min total. All for the low price of $85 wtf. Seriously pay attention get off the phones and do a proper job. And well the price, clear theft read more

got a great haircut, morgan went the extra mile of asking me how it's looking from my perspective throughout the cut and was just generally very communicative about her methods and even showed me the back with her mirror at the end without me even having to ask which was all very appreciated and helped me to be more comfortable with how the cut looks, she also noticed i was fiddling with the back top bit a little after she said she was finished and offered to do a lil more trimming to accommodate my ocd lmao was super super appreciated, great cut n really nice vibes, would definitely go back! read more

So I usually dont go to the more boutique hair cut places. My cuts are pretty simple. But when I passed by this place on a whim and saw the old-timey chairs, retro look, kind of punk kind of hipster scene, I had to give them a try. My barber was great, we talked through what I was wanting, length, style, etc. That night, the style felt a little too long. I went back the next day and in 10 min he trimmed me right up, no charge. That is what I call satisfaction guaranteed. Really nice staff, great environment. Schedule in advance because they will book up. read more

Charming space, great people, and I got an excellent haircut from Ethan. Definitely recommend.

This place is very concerned about it's tardiness rules -The following found in the same email: "If you can't make your appointment, just give us a call and let us know or cancel via Resurva. If you no call/no show twice, we will need to block your account and information from creating another account until the missed appointment is paid for. Thanks, Sailor Bup's Barbershop - Halifax We allow a late arrival of 5 minutes. After 5 minutes your appointment will be cancelled and we move to the next customer or take a walk in. Late appointments push everyones schedules back so we ask that you show up on time. If you can't make your appointment, just give us a call and we can cancel it for you. No sweat! No call/no shows will result in your account being blocked from making any further appointments until the no show is paid for or you can come as a walk in when a spot is available. " So it was rather disappointing that even though I arrived right on time I was made to wait 20 minutes before being seen. During said wait there was no acknowledgement from staff or apology. A simple 'sorry mate' whist the other stylists/barbers cleaned up would have gone down a treat. All in all a medium haircut for a medium price. read more

I travel extensively for a living, which means I sometimes need a hair cut and have to trust whomever is on the controlling end of the shears or clipper. I was in Halifax the other day and found Sailor Bup's on Yelp. My choice paid off. The place had a great vibe, from the nouveau retro sensitivity, and awesomely hip staff. From viewing the cuts as I waited, I knew everyone at the chair was competent and knew their craft. The vibe is something special, somewhat hipster, rockabilly, rebellious, cultured, and pure. I hope this makes sense. Cory took my flat top and gave it a simple yet unique twist using a dab of Pomade. I have yet to repeat the result...will have to try it with a comb next time. They have what it takes and I will be back the next time I am in Halifax. A rare 5/5 for a first time try at a barber shop, unlike any other. read more

When I last lived in Halifax I had a friend who worked at Kara's Hair Studio on Barrington and so usually got my haircuts there. There, just dated myself. Now I'm back and I need someplace new for my trims. Some previous reviews made me try out Sailor Bup's. I am a middle-aged bloke with delusions of coolness and this seemed like a good way to affirm that. From their Facebook page there's a link to an online booking tool. I like these, because you can make appointments at any hour (and the thought occurred to me late at night). They have profiles of the stylists to help newbies like me pick who you'd like to try. I saw that Amber had a tattoo of Bub the zombie from "Day of the Dead": sign me up! Their lateness policy seems pretty strict (more than 5 minutes late and you get a black mark; two black marks and you're banned!) so I arrived right on time. It's a small shop with just a couple of chairs. And it's very hipster: there were more tattoos on the staff than I've had hot dinners. But it was clearly busy and popular. Amber was ready to go, I got into the chair, and I got a haircut I was very happy with. She listened to what I wanted, but suggested a couple of changes that in hindsight were bang on. She was friendly and just chatty enough, and gave me a few opportunities for comment as the haircut proceeded. Options that cost extra were discussed in advance. It was a professional and very pleasant experience, and my head is happier for it. The price was very reasonable too: only $16 for a haircut if you're getting clippers on the side and back ($20 otherwise). It's clear that this will be my regular barbershop. read more

Affordable, Local, Friendly, Skilled, Fun. All the things a great barber shop should be. Stop in any time for a walk in (expect a wait time to chat with folks) or book a time on their web site (super mobile-friendly). A chill vibe with a professional attitude. 5 star all the way, NEVER had a bad experience and have been a customer since they opened over a year ago. read more

Recently relocated to Halifax and this is now my go to after my appointment today. I was lucky to catch Robyn on a cancellation on a Friday afternoon. She was extremely friendly and down to earth. Listened to what I was looking for an made sure I was satisfied with my end result. Shop had a great vibe to it, everyone was friendly and open. Felt like I was in a room with family. So gals, if you are looking for a fantastic gift for your fellas, or guys if you just want to treat yourself, look no further. Last Father's Day, my daughter, Lord love her, gave me a certificate for the "Full Monty" experience at Sailor Bup's Barbershop, located on Sackville Street. Today, I finally got around to using the certificate. I called and made an appointment and was told not to shave for a couple of days before my appointment. The Full Monty comprises a haircut, shave and a head and face massage. I was told that the appointment would be about 1.5 hours. I arrived early as requested and was offered coffee or other beverage. The playlist was 50s and 60s classics. Thinking back, I recall sitting in a barber's chair in my teens listening to these songs when they were hits on the shop radio rather than an iTunes playlist. I was then called to a chair by, who I was to find out was a very talented, barber named Sarah. She asked what I would like in the way of a cut and I said surprise me. Needless to say, once I put my glasses back on, I was very pleased. But, we were just getting started. The chair was reclined and for the next hour, there were hot towels, pre-shave gels, more hot towels, a rough shave, more hot towels, a close shave, a final hot towel, then a cold towel to close the pours. Finished you say. Au contrair, mon frère. Next came the aftershave lotion and a face and scalp massage. When this was finished, the chair was raised and I was so relaxed that I had trouble getting up and standing. After a few minutes to orient myself, I left the shop feeling 10 years younger. So, if I were to rate this on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, I would have to give it a 6 or 7. read more

The barbers here are really experienced. The barbershop has a very nice atmosphere. Make sure you BOOK an appointment beforehand.

Had TERRIBLE customer service from a blonde haired 'barbette' from Sailor Bups today. I booked an appointment 6 days in advance. All week I was looking forward to getting my hair trimmed up for an important meeting. The night came and traffic made me 7 minutes late. Upon entering the little cramped shop I immediately apologized and took my jacket off in anticipation for my hair cut. But then, the unexpected happened; the barbette said they had a 5 minute late policy and since I was 7 minutes late she refused to cut my hair. "2 minutes?" I said, "yup" she remarked. "You're joking right?" "Nope" She said. "That's pretty strict I said" "It's policy she said" "Are you sure your clock might not be a little fast?" I replied. "Yes I'm sure. There's a walk in shop on the other side of town that opens at 10am tomorrow" she uttered. "Um, okay, thanks". There was only one other person getting their hair cut and she wasn't doing anything. Then I realized I was the last booking of the day and she'd be getting off early by not cutting my hair. I wouldn't advise booking a haircut here if you need your hair cut for something important, incase you're 5 minutes and 1 millisecond late. I tip my haircutters well and I spent $50 at this place on hair products last month, but I won't be going back now. read more

Pricing good. Hair cut poor... I spike my hair, my entire front hairs are significantly shorter than the rest... clearly visible. The fade took 35 minutes and it was barely noticeable.... read more

Staff and facility all appear to be great and they definitely do a great job but the atmosphere in there made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable - like I walked into a party I wasn't invited to or something. That and some of the staff's mannerisms made it hard to shake the feeling that I was in a trendy place with trendy people who all looked at and treated me with conceit. read more

Was a customer for a few months and asked why the increase in cost for children's cuts following my boys' (who are amazingly disciplined) haircuts. I was told "It's because we don't really want kids to come in here" ... as I was paying for the three of us. Haven't been back since. read more
