I've always liked the Interlude especially for the fact that it spawned one of the best blocks in downtown Dartmouth, now boasting Two If By Sea and Nectar all in one wonderful row! You can even order off the Nectar menu while at the spa and have it brought over if you're feeling particularly indulgent. (You should...you totally deserve it.) The spa itself is remarkable in design with grandiose staircases, half floor steps up featuring zero-gravity yoga studios, and beautiful decor (underwater yoga photography - check it out) all around. Front desk staff are friendly enough although sometimes distracted with their own conversations, and the beauticians and massage therapists have always been both welcoming and professional on every visit. The spa treatment area on the bottom floor has a luxury feel with big, comfortable couches, the warmth of a faux fireplace, and large rooms for your relaxation pleasure. Between the three massage therapists I've been to (they keep leaving which can't be a good sign), they've all been fantastic although I'd definitely rather be able to have one for the long-term rather than keep readjusting to new folks as others quit. I swear it's not me... I didn't have such a great experience in the hair salon portion of the spa although that was just one cut with one stylist. She didn't do anything wrong - just didn't love the cut. On the other hand, friends go there all the time and come back looking stunning consistently. I have been going to The Interlude in Dartmouth for over 15 years and I have yet to have a single thing to complain about. Each time I have a massage by a different therapist, I think ...wow! That was awesome! I tell my 2 sisters who go to the Interlude when they come up to Halifax from Cape Breton and the Valley. Everyone has always told me to go to The Interlude. So when my regular salon (Thumpers) was closed on a Monday and I needed a blow out I decided to try somewhere new. The spa itself is beautiful. I was completely shocked by how large it was. I only wish the staff matched the pleasantness of the decor. I felt completely ignored by the front desk staff. They were too busy with themselves to really meet my needs. I had no idea where to go to get to the salon itself. Eventually she pointed it out but I felt like I was inconveniencing her. I then waited upstairs while I watched the two stylists chat amongst themselves making me wait an additional 15 minutes. It felt awkward and inappropriate. Not really a pleasant spa atmosphere as the 80's music blared in the background amongst their chatter. The stylist was pleasant but was more of a sales person. The entire time she tried to sell me products I didn't need or want. My hair is straight and she went on and on about how I should purchase the new line of shampoo for curly haired people. I had a round brush blow-out that day and I was not happy with the results. Truthfully, I would have been better off doing my hair at home. I had specifically emailed them before asking if they had someone there on Mondays who did phenomenal blow-outs and they said yes. Oh they were quite wrong. Not to mention by the time I made it to the event 2 hrs later by hair looked the same as when I went in. The downstairs area is both large and cozy with dim lights, plush couches, and soft music. The treatment rooms I've been in have been warm and inviting. The massage tables are large and swaddled in soft blankets and heading pads; everything you need to forget your worries for a moment and let the stress be rubbed away. If you're looking for a way to wind down from a stressful week, I recommend the healing stone massage. Warm stones are used during the massage instead of just healing hands. The only thing to note is that it is more of a superficial massage, so if you're looking for a more deep tissue approach to work out those knots, you'll have to stick to the therapeutic massage. If you really want to pamper yourself, I highly recommend throwing in a mani-pedi combo. A wonderful soak and massage prime your digits for a coat of pretty polish expertly applied by their estheticians. If you're a first-time pedicure indulger, make sure you bring some flip flops to avoid messing up your toe polish until it's completely set. On your way out, you can pick up a number of relaxation and beauty products to give yourself a bit of a spa experience at home between visits. But if you can swing it, try to schedule your next visit sooner than later. After all, the world can't be that bad after a scalp and foot massage. read more

The Interlude, located in Downtown Dartmouth, is a high-end spa specializing in massages, hair and aesthetics. I have only been there on one occasion. I went one afternoon for a massage. When you first arrive, they ask you to wait downstairs in this room filled with leather sofas, elegant decor and soothing music - to help set the mood for the services you're about to receive. However, no sooner had I sat down when their music began skipping - slightly irritating to say the least. Shortly after, I was met by my masseuse. I've only been to Interlude once, and am not sure if I will return. I booked a massage about one year ago and wasn't particularly impressed with the service I received. The RMT was about 10 minutes late, not very friendly, and not especially professional. The massage itself was unremarkable, and I felt reluctant to pay the high price once it was all said and done. I found out shortly afterward that the RMT was no longer working there, which did not surprise me in the least. With that being said, Interlude's interior is absolutely breathtaking. I cannot remember the last time I was so impressed by a spa's decor! As other reviewers have mentioned, the spa is quite spacious - even the bathroom is massive. I took my husband here for a couples massage for his birthday this past weekend. It was both our first time here but let me tell you, we will be back! We were welcomed warmly when we entered and were shown the way to the massage waiting area. We couldn't believe how big this place was. From the outside it looks tiny and unassuming, but WOW! You get in there and it's just like the Tardis! Our therapists provided us with an information sheet to fill out and then took us to our private room. They asked about any previous massages, injuries and ailments, and what we'd like to have focused on today. I was with Mike and my husband was with one of the female therapists, but I can't remember her name. Both were extremely knowledgeable and made sure that we were comfortable for our full hour. My friends and I made the trip over to Dartmouth to try the most unique fitness activity offered by the Interlude, anti-gravity yoga, yoga done in a hammock, silk-like slings, suspended from the ceiling. This type of yoga is designed to increase strength, flexibility and agility with the added decompressive benefits of hanging upside down. And because the Interlude is the only studio in Canada to offer anti-gravity yoga, you also get to imagine that you're a Hollywood celeb while doing this exclusive activity. As a way of making it fun to try this new fitness activity, the spa offers anti-gravity yoga parties. For $30 each, you get one hour of instruction and a $15 gift card to spend on food and drinks next door at Nectar Social House owned by the same family. While some basic yoga poses are included in the class, it reminded me more of circus school as you soar through the air. I considered it a preview of what it would be like to be a Cirque de Soleil performer. Regular practice would certainly strengthen your core and upper body. Classes are available on a term basis. Under the guidance of the instructor, we spent our one hour of instruction laughing as we attempted to master hanging upside down. The Interlude is my go-to place for an indulgent, relaxing massage. I love that it's in downtown Dartmouth just a few blocks from my house and close to other ammenities like Two if by Sea. The spa sets me in relaxation mode the second I arrive. Everything feels very high end and luxurious. If you head downstairs for a massage there is a lovely waiting area complete with comfy sofas and faux fireplace. Soft music plays and I feel like I would be shunned if I took out my cell phone and broke the relaxing vibe, but that's the way it should be! My massage therapist has always been on time and professional. I love Aveda, so it is a definite plus for me that they use their products in the spa. Although you have to agree that the Reno's done at the spa are magnificent. I went for a massage downstairs (I forget his name). He was amazing. Would go back for that service any day. The problem is they can't keep staff. every time I tried to book an appointment with the same person, you are lucky if they are still there. I had a pedicure done there and the girls wasn't very good at what she does. She nicked the nail polish on my big toe putting the sandal on and instead of starting over and making it look good-you will never believe what she did!!! She took nail polish remover and smudged it over and tried to repair it. The nail polish bubbled and look horrible. You should of seen it. I was in Cole Harbour and went into Creative Cuts and Natasha repaired it for me properly. She removed the damaged polish and redid my nail. It looked great when I left. By the way, when I went to Cuba, my pedicure didn't even last me 4 days. read more

The Interlude...The decor is contemporary, however, cold feeling, like the staff who make you feel like an interruption to their morning coffee break when you walk in. They do not smile or make you feel welcome. They point everybody in different directions and send you walking upstairs or down without knowing where you are going. My experience and opinion of this overpriced windowless, basement "spa" would never be to recommend wasting your time or spending your money on unfriendliness. read more

I have only been to Interlude (Dartmouth) once and I can tell you I will never be going back. I went in to get eyelash extensions before an event and trip I was going on and was completely disappointed in the results. I've had extensions before but only classics and I wanted to try volume lashes at a place that had good ratings and I found interlude from a mix of online searching and recommendations. (That were wrong by the way) The staff there was not very friendly when I walked in and made me feel out of place. I had no idea where to go and had to wait until they stopped chatting to one another to get directions. Once I got to the waiting area it took her about 20 minutes into my appointment to come out and retrieve me. Once I was in there she wouldn't let me show her pictures of what I wanted and barely let me talk to her about It either. She ended up doing what she wanted and what she thought would look best. Which looked like shit! Not to mention she had me laying there in an uncomfortable position for almost three hours and asked me some questions that were to personal and made me feel uncomfortable answering. I wanted volume lashes and ended up looking like I had classics again. I wanted a full looking lashes with a cat eye shape and she gave me patchy, classic looking lashes with barely any shape to them whatsoever. Half of them were glued half way up onto my natural lashes and fell out the next day. Her fans were so minuscule it's shocking they could even call it volume lashes. Still they had me pay $230 plus and I was so unhappy with it but felt like I couldn't make a scene in their oh so quiet spa so when I went downstairs to complain, the employees wouldn't listen and insisted I looked amazing. So I guess I have to post it on here so that no one else makes the mistake of trusting them with doing their lashes because they still haven't responded to my call about the complaint. I went to Interlude last week for a last-minute haircut. They had something available right away, and it felt like such a luxurious cut. My stylist, Jenn, was awesome- super friendly, and seemed to know my hair despite never having cut it before. The scalp massage I received was incredible, and even got to spend some time relaxing under a couple of hot towels. It is the best cut I've gotten in a long time. I would definitely recommend Interlude and Jenn. read more

Upon entering the interlude my first impression of the spa was amazing. The old building creates a warm cozy inviting look. Once I entered the spa I was greeted as though I was interrupting a conversation had by what looked like the owner pr manager (a man) and the girls working on the desk. I said my name and the service I was there for (waxing) and was then sent upstairs. Being a new client I didn't know where to go once upstairs or where I was going at all, I felt uncomfortable but headed up the stairs and sat in what looked like the waiting room. Numerous girls walked past me in a rush and not one acknowledged the fact that there was a client sitting right there. I arrived 10 minutes early then waiting 10 minutes past my appointment for the girl who would be doing my waxing. When she came and greeted me I could tell she wasn't having the best day and wasn't excited to be doing my service which made me feel even more uncomfortable. She brought me into the room and told me to get changed and she would be right back. It was my first Brazilian wax so I didn't know what exactly she wanted me to do. As I waited for her to come back I could hear someone using the bathroom in the room next to me, not very spa like. What concerned me the most was how dirty the trolly with her uncovered supplies was. The wax pot was full of caked on wax and dirt. As she did the service I watched closely to see how sanitary it was, she continued to double dip the stick into the pot and onto my skin. Once I saw that I lied to her and told her I couldn't take the pain so I didn't have to continue with the unsanitary waxing. I will NOT be back and I urge anyone thinking of going to rethink their decision. If the wax pots and the presentation of the room is not clean, most likely nothing else is. read more
