We had a bar snack sandwich each and was impressed by the staff and the quality of the food, so we had a quick look at the full menu and decided to book a table for that evening. The food is quite traditional, but with a wonderful eastern influence. Beautifully presented with fantastic flavours, every course was a delight and I thought the bill was very reasonable. I've certainly paid more for lesser fare than this! I would heartily recommend anybody who finds themselves in the Barnstaple area check this place out!

This pub is a slippery fella to track down. The pub was very quiet at lunchtime on a weekday. Split into two bars (like many older pubs), I had a section all to myself. The other section was large with a TV screen and a pool t, the section I was in smaller and cosier. They brew their own beer on the premesis and the one I had (Marathon Ale10p per pint to charity) was quite nice. It's a little more expensive than your pub chains, but it's well worth it! We've become regulars there, and I don't think we've ever had a bad meal. The portions are large, and the food is of fine quality and locally sourced - they list their suppliers on a black board in the bar. The wine selection is good, there are local ales on tap, and they serve good coffee. We tend not to have desserts simply because we're so full from the main course, but when we have had room for it, their deserts are every bit as good as the rest of the food. The only problem with this place is that it can get very busy, especially for Sunday lunches and during the holidays. Booking is recommended. There are two beer gardens (one out front, one out back), the cosy bar area in the front, and an area that's more like a restaurant in the back, with The Den that can be hired out for functions.
