New Jersey Born But BIRMINGHAM ROOTS…read more I had the opportunity to visit The Shop @ 1417 during my family's reunion weekend in Birmingham, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip. After our Friday night all-white meet-and-greet dinner, our group wanted to keep the celebration going, so we headed over to The Shop. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was incredible. Admission was only $5 per person, the music was on point, and the energy was nothing but positive. The DJ immediately noticed our group dressed in all white and asked what the occasion was. When we told him we were in town for a family reunion and had family from New Jersey, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Dallas, and other places, and that our family name is White, he gave us shout-outs throughout the entire night. That personal touch made us feel truly welcomed. The venue itself is unique. I was told it used to be a mechanic shop, and it's been transformed into a spacious entertainment venue with both indoor and open-air vibes. The fans kept the place cool, there was plenty of room to dance, and the setup was perfect for a grown-and-sexy crowd. Our group had an amazing time. There were only two men in our party and nine women, and everyone danced the night away. The bartender--if I remember correctly, I think her name was Crystal--was friendly, attentive, and helped make the experience even better. The owner was welcoming, the staff was great, and the regulars made us feel like we belonged. If you're ever in Birmingham and you're looking for a laid-back spot with great music, great people, and an unforgettable vibe, I highly recommend The Shop @ 1417. A friendly bartender at Up-Down Arcade Bar (another must-visit!) told us about this place, mentioning it's one of the few bars open 24 hours on the weekend. Naturally, curiosity won. From the jump, this place had character. There's a bouncer at the door, a makeshift elevated DJ booth to the right where you have to pay cash for a "membership." Don't worry -- there's an ATM conveniently behind the booth, ready to charge you a nice little convenience fee if you didn't bring cash. The membership lasts a year, but still, that was a first for me. Inside? Small. Crowded. Lively. And at 1 AM, there was a guy passed out in a chair right by the entrance -- with his dog roaming freely around the bar. I honestly couldn't make this up if I tried. The bartenders were solid -- fast, cool, and trying their best to keep up with the rush. There's a selection of local beers (pretty good ones too) and two pool tables... well, technically one, since they only had one cue ball. The pool sticks? Ancient relics. The bathroom? I'll spare you the visuals. Outside was much more breathable. There was a local guy named Walter -- from Georgia, of all places -- selling BBQ. Cool dude. The turkey wing was a little tough, but his attitude made up for it. Now, the real highlights? The people and the atmosphere. You've got folks eavesdropping on your conversations, tossing around racially backed jokes at me (that I politely corrected), a row of chain-smokers out front, and a woman openly asking for cigarettes or change that may have been homeless, but was definitely a crackhead and she so eloquently vocalized. It's a gritty and downright raw type of place, but somehow, it works. There wasn't any live music when we came, but I'm sure that's what makes this place shine more than it already does in its own unique way. I'll definitely be back for a performance night. Bottom line: Five stars because The Nick is exactly what it's supposed to be -- an unfiltered slice of Birmingham nightlife that refuses to apologize for being itself.

I went at 4:30'ish on a Tuesday for happy hour with some pals. Very slow time which was perfect for us. The bartender was very laid back. The customers seemed like regulars... familiar. Good drinks. The walls are super super busy. You can't look and not see something you didn't see before. I definitely recommend going for the experience if you've never been.

I'm so happy I went a few times to enjoy live music (I've also been when live music was not an option), drinks, food and all around good vibes. Location is not hard to find, parking is easy, bathrooms are clean, service can be slow at times but they are always friendly. Great space for a group, meeting a couple of people or going alone. I recall the owners being husband/wife. Very sweet and you can tell they love what they do.

The ribs were very tender but needed more smoke flavor. The baked beans were not good; lacked flavor and tasted like canned pork and beans. The mac and cheese was decent, nothing to brag about. The owner/manager stopped by and apologized for the wait. It took a while for our appetizers to arrive. I appreciate the fact that he took the time to address the wait as he did with other customers. Our server was friendly, very attentive and also apologized for the wait. We do plan on returning to try other items on the menu and to have a good drink.

It was most recently Palm & Pig. I tried it when it was Palm and Pig and I thought it was rather good. Hillside is located near the Vestavia City Center right next to Bob's Power Equipment, which ironically has been in that location for over 20 years at least. Hillside is located on at the end of a small strip so they have a nice outdoor space with a covered patio. It's great for a guitar player and with big heaters is even pleasant to sit out there (when it wasn't Hillside). The interior is quite large despite the small entrance. It extends quite far to the back. They have a nice little bar and a good side stage for their many live performers. In fact their very model for this restaurant thrives on live performers with "Band Inquiries Call 205-901-2225" centered on their menu! Our party arrived on bustling Friday evening. Luckily we didn't have to wait long at all and got a table right away. Our server arrived quickly and got our drink orders. There wasn't a performer but the place was loud with chatter. While we were there, a two man guitar group started setting up. Our drinks arrived promptly and our orders taken. About 15 minutes later our food arrived. Matthew tried the Diablo burger. I had to have a bite and it was spicy as promised. Their "Dooom a -que" sauce wasn't bad. Tammy and Jack tried the Philly. Shaved ribeye, caramelized onions and topped with American cheese on a cuban roll. It also wasn't bad. Plentiful grilled beef and good bread. Sarah had the Hillside burger. It was also good and burger a nice medium. I tried the shrimp poboy. Lettuce, onion, pickle were topped with 6 perfectly fried shrimp in a slightly toasted hoagie bun. After I lathered it with the smoked tomoato aioli sauce which was served on the side, I took my first bite and was impressed. I've had worse and this poboy was quite enjoyable! Yom Yom Yom. We also really enjoyed the "okra fries". The cucumber salad was rather underwhelming and the fries were soggy and undersalted. Surprisingly none of us tried any of their bbq. A good reason to return. We had a good time and had great service. If you enjoy good ole southern comfort food and good live entertainment, give Hillside a try.
