I was told my hair was thin and limp, and could not stand up

So here's the thing. I went to Najha three times. My hair never looked good, it never looked anywhere near what it look like in her videos and the whole experience was just incredibly disappointing. I decided to wait to leave a review to see if maybe we just started on the wrong foot but after 3 visits im done. So here's what happened. I waited almost a year to get an appointment with her because she wasn't accepting new clients when she called me and told me I could come in, I was thrilled. Appointment #1 I arrived 15 minutes early and then sat there for 45 additional minutes before she started my hair. No apology know nothing. I just sat there silently for 45 minutes waiting. One of the things I don't like is when a stylist puts me under the dryer for too long and dries my hair out. My hair was dry 20 minutes before the dryer turned off and then I sat there for another 30 minutes waiting for her. By the time I left I'd been there for three hours and 15 minutes. I missed my second appointment and my hair looked horrible. She informed me that my hair was thin and fine. My hair is not thin and it's not fine. Here's a picture of what my hair looks like at my previous stylist and how my hair looked with Najah. She put tons of hairspray in it which cause it to be dry. I told her I did not want sheen because it makes my hair flat. She put it in my hair anyway. I literally don't need anything on my hair but she insisted I did, and this is what I got. I told her I did not want the top of my haircut because I was trying to let it grow out and she cut it quite short. I told her not to cut the gray streak in the front, she cut it . I don't even know what the $50 consult was for. Appointment #2. This time I told her don't put ANYTHING at all of my hair no matter what and don't flip it up. Instead style down so that way she could just see that my hair did not need product. I thought that was the easiest thing in the world and if she knew what she was doing then my hair would look beautiful. It looked better but nothing at all like those videos. Honestly, it looks like a grandma. I've been to my previous stylist at least 50 times and it looked beautiful and bouncy every time. Not with Najha Appointment # 3. First she called me the day before my third appointment and rescheduled it for the following week because of some clerical error. Then she called me the day before the rescheduled appointment and asked me to come in an hour later. I tried to be totally flexible so I told her I had an appointment in Acworth at 1 o'clock so I had to be out of her salon no later than 12:15 so as long as she committed to do that then I could come at 10:15 per her request. I arrived at 10:14 for my 1015 appointment and she strolled in at 10:45 with no apologies. I was immediately stressed. She didn't even try to comfort me and say "don't worry I'm gonna get you out on time. At noon I was still sitting in the chair waiting to be curled. I went to her and I said I really have to get out of here and she was like "I know I'm almost there" or something. Bottom line is I miss my appointment. She did apologize but immediately blamed it on her doctor. THEN She was like that'll be $135. She didn't even ask me if she cost me any money but we have an a missed that appointment. She didn't appear to care. The bottom line is this she doesn't really seem to be passionate about what she does. This is clearly just a job. That happy, smiling person in the videos creating beautiful hair.....I never met that person. The customers are not first, the customer service is bad. There was one other girl there, who was leaving her station constantly to answer the phone. She was very helpful and washed me while Najha was late. But they clearly need a receptionist. I don't know what's up with those videos, but I also noticed that a few of the really dope haircuts from the videos are also on her wall, so I don't know if they're a fluke or from 10 years ago or what. Clearly, she knows how to cut hair but my hair is very easy to do. I can make it bouncy and fluffy myself. I can make it stand up with a tight curl, and I can put hold on it to keep it that way, but for some reason she wasn't able to do any of that. Plus she's really over priced. She had no respect for me, my business or my time. The days of me sitting in a salon for an hour waiting on somebody to show up or being there. Three hours and my hair looking average went out of style 20 years ago. I gave it a shot, but this was definitely a waste of time. On the only positive note, she didn't gossip and wasn't negative like some hairstylist. And the other girl who works there seems really sweet and it's clean and the music was nice but as for the hair, none of it was worth my time.

You will not find a better place to get your hair done. Your appointment starts as scheduled. Everyone is super friendly. The stylist are the best in their field. Christina (my stylist) is a phenomenal colorist.

I'm not ecstatic about this "cut" or better yet trim. Back to the Bay I go.

I'm visiting from Cali (Bay Area) I just got a relaxer and cut a week ago. Saw this place on IG and I only wanted a wash and style. The atmosphere is nice (2 stars), the stylist greets me and we discuss my hair style (1 star) and the young lady who shampoo'd & wrapped my hair was great (2 stars). I sat under the dryer for a while. My stylist (Shoshanna) came and took the wrap strips off and I sat under for a few minutes until the dryer cut off.....I was under there waiting for every bit of 15 minutes. She comes to get me and we go to her chair. She says she'll trim a little off bc it's a bit lifeless. Which I understand bc my hair is like that with a relaxer it thickens up in about 2 weeks. I'm like cool, she's cutting and cutting. I'm thinking there's not much to cut bc I just got a cut last week. She tells me whoever cut my hair did it in a man's cut. Not feminine and cut off too much in the back. I agreed with the back and was a lil ehhh with the feminine part. Nonetheless when she finished I wasn't like ahhhhh haaaa. It was like oh okay. It looks okay. When I called last week for an appointment, I was informed it was $60 for a wash and style. The receptionist says $100 for a cut and style. (- 3 stars) I'm like what? A cut? Maybe a trim and that's reaching. I'm not happy with the price and services rendered. I almost want to call my bank bc I feel ripped off. She didn't "cut" much especially not $40 worth. I'll call my bank for the charges. If I come back, I'll only come for the owner and the shampoo lady with the cute blonde hair.

First time customer and I absolutely adore my haircut! Dani, did an amazing job! She was knowledgeable, attentive and made me feel so comfortable with my 1st haircut! Dani has gained a new client and the overall appearance, vibe and customer service was stellar! I'll definitely recommend and be returning to Like the River!

Absolutely love this place! The atmosphere is inviting, and service is top notch. Never had typical urban salon issues here: talking on the phone while styling, loud, double-booking appointments causing you to be here all day, etc... One problem: Appointments! If you do not book at least one week in advance, you will not be able to book an appointment with anyone. They are super busy, and all stylist slots fill up fast! However if you are looking for a stylist in particular, Tameka is great! She is very knowledgeable and can cut hair like no other.

Like the River Salon is more than just a salon. It's a place to enjoy good company with very professional and courteous service. The atmosphere is very nice and the stylists are so good at styling hair that it is never a second thought about returning. Regina has been my hair stylist at the salon for a year and I always look forward to seeing her. She is professional, polite, timely, and my hair cut/style is always a head turner each week. In a city like Atlanta where there are hundreds of stylists and therefore numerous options, its a pleasure to be a part of a salon that is a front runner in the business! Kisha H.

Hair by Toitti I promise this picture doesn't do the style any justice.

I'm coming off of a 7-month stretch between a chemical relaxer due to being mishandled and quite frankly traumatized by my last stylist (AVOID SP HairCare: decent results, with terrible professionalism). Thank God I like to maintain my own hair so I didn't walk into the studio necessarily in shambles. But I don't play around with strong chemicals and it was beyond time to go see a REAL professional. For some reason, there is a belief that Black/African-American hair can't be done at texturally diverse salons... WRONG!!! The experience started off wonderfully with a greeting from the host desk and an offering of tea, coffee, or water. I was relieved to see that the environment was neutrally colored, clean and organized (including the product display). The green wall behind the hostess stand is a beautiful touch. I was even more relieved to see that the bathroom was SPOTLESS. Junko is a medium-sized salon. There's only three wash stations and about 12-15ish stylist stations (iirc) neatly but closely arranged in the space. The stations are minimalist in nature and products/tools are brought out gradually on trays to minimize clutter -- I liked that. I came in at opening (10AM) on a Friday and I wasn't the only one. This place is probably packed during the weekend, but luckily they operate smoothly through a very efficient scheduling system. Deposits are required, non-refundable and are 30% of your estimated total. Payment was easy. Now let me tell you about Sharell. She is a multidisciplinary hair artist and master cosmetologist who used to own her own salon. Her passion for hair brought her out of retirement and into Junko. She has a calm, caring energy that makes you feel HELD. She can do any and everything -- I've seen the results! But she's especially passionate about given Black women better than what the "natural" salon industry has recently normalized (aesthetics over health). She loved that I asked questions and wanted to see me be knowledgeable about my own hair. We casually talked the entire time about life, but it wasn't forced. She also didn't forcefully upsell products or appointments, but the way she educates around hair prompts you to want more and better for yourself through gentle recommendations. Hair health IS a priority with her. She even apologized on behalf of the last stylist who did me dirty and didn't have to at all. AND she complimented me on how well I took care of my hair, instead of trying to manipulate me into wildly unnecessary services (*cough* SP HairCare). I left this salon feeling like a million bucks. I felt so relaxed and happy... which I realize is how you're supposed to feel! Other clients were also raving about their services during my appointment and it was nice seeing people and other staff so joyful. Now it did cost a pretty penny, but you have to be willing to invest in something as precious as your crown. I'm so so so excited to book again with Sharell and be back in the salon.

He's super friendly and is so great at conversation without being overwhelming. I've vented about a bunch of random problems and he's so insightful about everything. I really enjoy those conversations. Graham has an intern named Juniper who is also amazing. She'll typically be the one to blow out my hair after highlights. She is so sweet and fun to talk to. And you can tell that she really cares about doing a good job. And she does do a good job. And shoutout to Rob at the Midtown location for giving me bangs. I don't think I would love them so much if he weren't the one who cut them. They have free bangs trimmings here, so whenever I get my highlights done, I ask Rob to trim my bangs, and he does. He's very thoughtful about cutting hair. Especially with bangs. He will ask for pictures, and if you can't find any, he will pull up his own pictures on his iPad to help you figure out what you want. He also is an artistic genius and will recommend things that work with your facial structure better. I thought I wanted curtain bangs but he recommended a more straight cut of bangs, and I am so thankful he did. If you want a good haircut that makes you look like you can afford the best of the best (aka Rob), you need to see Rob. Even when my hair isn't blow dried or straightened or whatever, it looks amazing when I wake up and go to sleep. He gave me layers once and, if you'll believe it, it changed my social life for the better. Also he's very good at getting people to talk about their lives. Inquisitive and talented. If you have your own strong preferences and he recommends otherwise, you can still tell him what you prefer and he'll happily do it, but he knows so much about what looks good on different people, so I'd definitely listen to him. He's done my little teenage brothers' hair before and they appreciate him a lot too, which says a lot because they're picky teenage boys. They come home from the appointments with their heads held a little higher in confidence. I don't think it's possible to leave Van Michael Salon without your head held a little higher.

I hadn't considered that everyone has a different cutting technique and the description of the haircut that you've been getting consistently with one stylist may not be interpreted the same way by another stylist :( After the initial cut, one side was about 1-2 inches shorter than the other side. So then the end result was my hair being much shorter than I wanted in the first place. Much of it was dry cutting which can be so hit or miss depending on the stylist, and some texturing at the ends (which to me just made it worse... I prefer thick sharp ends) Love the color and I kept saying that but haircut wise, the more I look at it the worse I feel about it and it just complete takes away from the color since I will prob keep it up until it grows out.
