Truly incredible. Everyone here is exceptionally talented. I get my highlights done by Graham at the Midtown location, and he never fails to do the best job I've ever seen. He's super friendly and is so great at conversation without being overwhelming. I've vented about a bunch of random problems and he's so insightful about everything. I really enjoy those conversations. Graham has an intern named Juniper who is also amazing. She'll typically be the one to blow out my hair after highlights. She is so sweet and fun to talk to. And you can tell that she really cares about doing a good job. And she does do a good job. And shoutout to Rob at the Midtown location for giving me bangs. I don't think I would love them so much if he weren't the one who cut them. They have free bangs trimmings here, so whenever I get my highlights done, I ask Rob to trim my bangs, and he does. He's very thoughtful about cutting hair. Especially with bangs. He will ask for pictures, and if you can't find any, he will pull up his own pictures on his iPad to help you figure out what you want. He also is an artistic genius and will recommend things that work with your facial structure better. I thought I wanted curtain bangs but he recommended a more straight cut of bangs, and I am so thankful he did. If you want a good haircut that makes you look like you can afford the best of the best (aka Rob), you need to see Rob. Even when my hair isn't blow dried or straightened or whatever, it looks amazing when I wake up and go to sleep. He gave me layers once and, if you'll believe it, it changed my social life for the better. Also he's very good at getting people to talk about their lives. Inquisitive and talented. If you have your own strong preferences and he recommends otherwise, you can still tell him what you prefer and he'll happily do it, but he knows so much about what looks good on different people, so I'd definitely listen to him. He's done my little teenage brothers' hair before and they appreciate him a lot too, which says a lot because they're picky teenage boys. They come home from the appointments with their heads held a little higher in confidence. I don't think it's possible to leave Van Michael Salon without your head held a little higher. read more

I have been coming to Van Michael for 13 years and now even travel in from a different state to see Christy, Graham, and Juniper!... they are a dream! To find a trusting stylist is so very hard, and knowing I have a safe space with my hair during all of its transitions and the respect I feel on a personal level is so heartwarming. Very kind stylists. I had a good experience talking with them. I visited on June 7th and opted for the new talent cut (midtown) and color (Virginia highlands). Unfortunately I have been really unhappy with my haircut since, here is the "after" photo taken on the day I got it. I don't understand the layer placement and haven't been able to style it to look normal. I've gotten comments about my layers and honestly have never gotten such a bad haircut... I showed inspiration photos and none of them looked remotely like this. Would be happy to speak with the salon about who performed the service. I told the stylist Ty I wanted a trim and shape up with length to my collar bones. It will take me a year to recover from this butchering. I now have a one length bob to my chin. Did he not listen??? The first time I was 15 min late for my appointment with Mary and they made me reschedule and drive there the second time (which, technically, is listed in their policy, but would I call this exceptional service? Probably not.) Anyway, I thought if the haircut will be done really well, it will be worth the wait. All I needed was a basic touch up of split ends and a gentle gradual frame around the face - nothing difficult. When my haircut was done, my hair was a lot shorter than we discussed and I basically had a short haircut with bangs. Instead of gradually increasing length from the front to the back, there is just this weird chunk of short hair by my face on one side and one side is shorter than the other so it looks patchy and uneven. (I paid $150 for this haircut, so it was not a beginner-level stylist.) I decided not to do my ombré hair color there, don't want to risk it because, quite frankly, this looks horrible. On the last picture you can see how she cut several odd "chunks" of short hair and ALL of them are a different length - none match the opposite side. Now I have to curl my hair every day, as this is the only way to conceal this disaster. read more

I went into the Van Michael Buckhead salon and tried a keratin treatment for the first time. The stylist, a straight, middle-aged man was incredibly flirtatious and border line inappropriate. When sharing how long my hair would be before and after the treatment he signaled with his hands, almost an inch away from my breasts. I felt like if I breathed, he would have touched me. All the while I was nervous, and laughed off his advances, where he said things like "if you were my girl, I would have you wear your hair this way..", "what's your situation, are you married, do you have kids?" "Oh wow, beautiful and smart." Before this experience, the hair salon always felt like a safe space for me. At the grocery store, the gym, and just out and about women are used to men invading their personal space. But not at the salon, it felt like a sanctuary. I called, and left a voice mail on the salon manager's line and a week later I have still not heard a response. It's important that the salon enact practices to protect other clients and stylists from unwanted sexual attention and have a no nonsense stance on displays of male power and privilege that threaten the well being of others. read more

This is my favorite salon ever! Normally salons can be so pretentious and stick up your butt gossipy but these people really hit a home run with quality work and attitude :-) so grateful to have found them! I never knew a salon could be so upbeat, friendly, and positive :-) I've been to a lot of different salons in New York City and everywhere. They have been extremely safe during the Covid pandemic, they require you to enter with a mask and hand sanitize and take your temperature, they will provide a new mask if you'd like one but ask that you put it on outside and then come in safely. They are very vigilant about enforcing the mask rule. I really appreciate this! I do miss the tea and coffee they'd give you, maybe they'll do one to go in the near future :-) read more

Samuel is AMAZING at highlighting and coloring hair. I want to point him out because it is SO hard to find a hair stylist who can actually highlight dark brown/black hair well without turning it brassy and orange! This is the first time I've ever had such an incredible experience. I came in today very disheartened about a poor highlighting job from a different salon (they turned my black hair into a mess of different orange/brown/blonde colors and my hair was damaged from the bleach). Samuel took the time to listen to what I wanted, showed me reference photos of what he could achieve given the state of my hair, and was so intentional with his entire process. You could tell that he carefully placed each highlight in a place that would look good and gave me the exact look I wanted in the first place. I went in thinking that I would just have to dye my whole head back to a solid black color, but he worked to give me the highlights I intended all along. I am so happy with my hair and cannot recommend Samuel enough!!! He is so talented and really knows what he is doing! Temp Checks, basic questions, routinely cleaning stations, masks and barriers made me feel like I made the right choice for my first haircut since March. Onto my stylist, Kat was just delightful. Free spirit, who took my request to 'do whatever you like' seriously. After a hair wash and a walk through of why my shampoo from CVS wasn't cutting it, we reviewed what she thought my hair could do and got to business! I have been going to Van Michael salon for the past 6 months and have had a stellar experience thanks to the magic Bailie has been able to perform on my hair. Going into the salon is usually the highlight of my week due to her peerless service and high-quality cuts. If you are looking to book a hair appointment you should ask yourself: "Do I want the best hair cut money can buy?" and "Am I ready too have my locks admired by all my friends and family?". If you answered yes to either of those questions then you would be foolish to see anyone other than Bailie as she is easily one of the most talented stylists I have ever had the pleassure of seeing and is truly a "cut" above the rest. Now I would not say my typical hair style is complicated; however, it is very easy to mess up. There are countless times I have experienced a queasy feeling in my stomach after seeing my hair "post-cut" when visiting other salons / barbers due to their shoddy cuts. Those days are long behind me now that I entrusted Bailie to work wonders on my hair. Now my hair is consistently trimmed just the way I like it and I come out of the cut feeling like a freshly trimmed poodle about to walk onstage at the Westminster Dog Show. I seriously think Bailie may moonlight as a magician with how magical the whole experience is. The thing that I like most about Bailie is that she willl take the time to listen to exactly what you want and make it her personal mission to carry out your vision down to the tiniest detail. I never feel rushed when describing what I want and Bailie does an excellent job at making sure she understands your hair goals. Not only are the quality of Bailie's haircuts unmatched but the level of care she has for her clients is mind-boggling. There was one time where my shirt had some hairs on it after one of my visits and Bailie took it upon herself to pull out a lint roller and wipe away all of the strays. Now that's what I call world class service! If I were to detail all of the positive experiences I have had seeing Bailie the list would be much too beefy to fit in Yelp's character limit. Instead, I hope my genuine enthusiasm in leaving this review speaks for itself and is a testament to Bailie's skills as a salonist. Welp... I hadn't gotten a hair cut in about 10 months. I called on a whim, hoping I could get in same-day at the Midtown location. Luckily for me, Bailie was available! I assume anyone at Van Michael is probably very well-qualified, but in my opinion, Bailie is the BEST. First, she is an absolute doll. She's so sweet and fun and didn't make fun of my split ends at all. And believe me when I say they were ROUGH. She worked a miracle with my hair, did exactly what I wanted (without knowing how to communicate it) and I loved it very second of it. She wasn't annoyed that I was emailing the entire time. Before she sent me on my way, she taught me how to curl my hair with a straightener!! After watching countless YouTube videos, I cannot tell you how happy I was to have a human take the time to teach me this coveted skill. My hair looked perfect when I left, and I know how to recreate the look perfectly, too! Highly recommend. read more

I arrived 15 min late because I was stuck in the traffic, so I called and they refused to blow dry my hair, in winter. I had to insist. I went to cover a few white hair, requesting a simple one-step color. They did a really poor job, using a color that does't match my natural base and moreover they burnt my hair using a warm lamp. When I kindly asked to switch it off they refused to do so, saying that they would have taken too long. Overall, an horrible experience, never again. read more

It was not a big deal, and we later found out that you can park at an area around the corner, and they will validate it up to 3 hours. We'll know next time! We were greeted with a smile and everyone was very friendly. The salon was busy and had limited seating, but they were very accommodating. Sue was our stylist and did a GREAT job. I would highly recommend her! She took the time to explain techniques to my granddaughter to help her with styling at home.
