I first got Japanese hair straightening last year with the wonderful stylist Kai, and I left a review then raving about how amazing the service was. Since that first visit, I've had two root touch-ups, and I still have nothing but great things to say about both the treatment and the stylists. Yesterday, I had my most recent root touch-up with the amazing Akemi. She's incredibly knowledgeable about the treatment, she performs it almost every day and has over 20 years of experience. I always feel completely confident in the hands of the stylists here. Akemi was very careful not to over-process my hair since I'm mixed (half Black and half White) and have a unique texture with different textures throughout. I left the salon feeling fantastic! This morning, my roots were super straight, and my hair looked shiny and healthy. I have had the weirdest experience at this salon and I'm very disappointed. I came for a cut and highlight with Ahmed over the weekend. I came with a gold blonde color and a layered bob that I'm growing out. He took me to a very light, beige, ashy blonde. When he asked me if I liked the color, he could tell on my face that I was pretty shocked by how beige it was. When I told him that I unfortunately didn't like the color and felt it washed me out he got very defensive. "Well I guess I failed you. Someone else can fix it." I told him that I didn't know we were gonna take it beige, and his response was that I didn't tell him NOT to take it beige. Why would you change the hue of someone's hair without asking them? I want to point out that I am the stereotypical apologetic millennial, so I was in no way rude to make him defensive like this. I kept saying I was sorry that I didn't like it, but was there anything we could do to fix it? Ultimately, he refused to retone it, said he was too busy and somebody else could do it. So I came back in a few days later and they were going to charge me toner + another $55 to dry the hair after I tone it. That is wild to me and the owner refused to budge. I could swallow paying for the toner because Ahmed took it off his bill but that would be another $100+ a tip for the other stylist! I even asked if i could just dry it myself and was told no. I tried to correct this the day of, took the time out of my schedule to come back, and think it was ridiculous that they would charge me over $50 to dry it just because I wasn't willing to walk out of the salon with wet hair. Another flag: you have to pay a deposit for any kind of color and they make you fill out & sign waivers that they can't guarantee color. I have never had happen at a salon before. This makes me think this may happen often. Oh, and the cut is fine. It's a bob but he took out all of the layers so it's just one length and not what I asked for. Whatever at this point. Weird experience, I'm still not happy with my hair, and out almost $250. Won't be returning. (I do wanna shout out Steven who was the stylist supposed to fix my toner. He seemed like a really nice guy and I think was just stuck in an awkward position with the policy. I wish I'd started with him.) read more

I was disappointed with my experience with Ahmed. I came in prepared with pictures of the haircut I wanted, and I specifically asked him what he noticed in the photos (layers, angles, etc.) so he could recreate the look. Every cut I showed him had an angled shape, and I asked for his professional opinion throughout, but he gave me no real input and just followed instructions without offering guidance. I also explained that I'm postpartum and have lost a lot of hair, and because my hair is already on the thinner side, I was concerned about it looking even thinner. When I asked what could make my hair look fuller, he told me there was "nothing" he could do. Then he asked me about my diet, which was not only irrelevant after I'd already explained it was postpartum hair loss, but also felt dismissive and impolite. At the end, when the cut wasn't angled enough, I asked him to adjust it while I was still in the chair. He told me "no, next haircut" because it would mean re-wetting my hair. I've never had a stylist refuse to fix something when I wasn't satisfied, and it was frustrating to be told to just live with it until I make another appointment. Overall, I didn't feel listened to, I left unhappy with the cut, and the way my concerns were handled was unprofessional. read more

I received a Japanese thermal hair straightening treatment at Junko Salon from Kai, and it caused severe, irreversible damage. My healthy, smooth hair is now brittle, frizzy, and breaking off in small pieces throughout. The texture has changed entirely--dry, rough, and poofy--and I am experiencing hair loss. To make matters worse, I brought my concerns directly to the salon manager. To my shock, instead of listening or addressing my issues and concerns, he flat out dismissed me entirely and claimed there was nothing wrong with my hair, offered no acknowledgment, no solution, no apology, and no refund. When pressed, he suggested that if there was damage, it must have been caused by something I did at home, not by Kai's work--completely refusing to take responsibility. This level of damage paired with the lack of accountability from management is unacceptable. I will not return, and I strongly advise others to avoid Junko Salon--especially for chemical straightening treatments. read more

The pros: it was easy to schedule online, the team was very flexible with accommodating a reschedule and everyone was friendly The Cons: I have had my hair highlighted for years and have never paid more than $250. The online price quote $165+ for full highlights which I knew would be a starting point but was fully expecting it to fall within the same range I've always paid. When I arrived I was asked to sign a waiver (First flag: I have never done this before at any other salon) detailing the price ($385-425). I was a bit in shock about the price but thought the service must be great if they're charging so much more but I was very wrong. It took more than 3 hours to complete the highlights/toning so I ended up having to skip the blowdry as I have young kids I needed to get back to. I ended up paying $400 + tip. After my hair dried I continued to be disappointed in the color and quality of the highlights. The picture attached is less than one week after the service and as you can see the stylist did not get close to the roots at all. Sudha (the owner) replied me with untrue statements. First, I called TWICE that morning (8:33 AM and 8:49 AM) when I realized I would be late. NO ONE ANSWERED THE PHONE!!!! So I even left voice message in 8:49 AM call! Second, I never keep calling the salon and yelling at reception.I ONLY CALLED ONCE after the service, which Ahmad yelled at me over the call. Third, the whole point is you charged me service that I didn' t aware. During the whole process no one mentioned there would be extra charge and you never showed me any itemized receipt/price. I had an appointment scheduled with Ms. Kai for a Japanese hair straightening treatment. While making the appointment online, I chose the option of "relaxer" since there was no option to select Japanese hair treatment" but put it in the notes that I wanted to get a Japanese hair straightening treatment done and also followed up by leaving a voicemail message to confirm this. I received a call back from the salon and they changed the appointment time to 3:45 PM from the initial 2:00 PM and was asked to talk to Ms. Kai who was going to be my stylist. She asked me if I have ever done Japanese hair straightening before, and I told her that I had this treatment done a year ago in December. During that time, she mentioned that since the last treatment was a year ago the whole treatment should be done for the full amount of $515 (and that is what she charges all her clients who had their last treatment done over 6 months ago). And she asked if I had any other chemical treatments or hair dye done (I said I do use box hair dye - semi permanent) and the last time it was done was two months ago. And I was informed that I would need to pay a deposit since it is a chemical treatment. But on the phone, I did hear the representative asking Ms. Kai if that is OK since I would be paying the deposit and she doesn't want an issue where I show up and Ms. Kai is not able to do the treatment due to the hair dye. The representative was told by Ms. Kai that that is OK and that shouldn't be a problem. Once I got there, Ms. Kai greeted me and asked me all the questions (for about 20+ minutes) and she gave me the apron to wear and was about to start when she told me that the treatment would only be done for new hair growth and not the old one. When she said that I asked if it would look the same all throughout since I didn't want the ends to be a little curly and the top to be perfectly straight. And I asked her how she would decipher where the new growth would end to apply the hair treatment and she informed me that she deals with hair all day and she knows exactly where that line would be. After that, I did ask her; since it is only gonna be applied to new hair growth and not the entire hair, would she be charging only for the touchup and not for the entire hair. She told me that it is going to be for the whole hair and when I showed her the pricing that was listed on the website, she asked for a moment and went to talk to the front desk (I'm assuming). When she came back, she told me she is unable to continue with the treatment because "she is uncomfortable since we have so many issues". I informed her I have no issues and I asked her what her issues were and she did not tell me any issues except she is uncomfortable and cannot continue. After requesting her to do it a few times if possible, and trying to figure out what her uncomfortableness was due to and failing; I requested her to find out if there is anybody else in the salon who might be willing to do it especially since I had to drive one hour to get there. Then she brought Mr. Ahmed who came and informed me that the stylist is uncomfortable due to the state of my hair. I asked what the issue with my hair was and he said the ends are too dry. (I do not understand that being a reason considering the fact that the treatment was only gonna be done to the new growth.) I do not know if the stylists are familiar with Indian hair, but I personally believe my hair is as soft as anybody else out there. I did inform both the stylists that I was okay with paying the whole amount multiple times and only had a question since this is my first time visiting this salon. I still do not understand what the whole issue was, but from my understanding, the issue was that she wanted to charge me for the whole treatment while only doing the touchup and when I showed her the pricing on the website, she suddenly stated that she is uncomfortable. I understand that Junko Hair Studio is a highly revered establishment that prides itself on providing great customer service and needless to say I am extremely disappointed in the unprofessional manner I was treated while visiting the establishment for the very first time. Also, I chose this establishment based on the 4.8 rating on their website, but when taking a closer look - all the reviews are from 4/15/2022 - 7/10/2022 posted almost every single day with 4 and 5 stars only; but with no option to post a review yourself. Scheduled an appointment a couple weeks ago with Kai, and I had some serious anxiety because I wanted to get highlights, and after a tiger stripe situation a couple years ago have religiously stayed with the same hair stylist in San Antonio. Cue my move to Atlanta, and unfortunately my highlights had grown out in a bad way. I'd had a bad experience at another hair salon near me in Midtown and decided to try this place based on other good reviews. My experience was really good! I never write reviews especially negative ones but i am very disappointed with how my hair came out. First, i only asked to cut an inch or two since i like my hair longer. I know it was a bit rough but she ended up cutting 4-5 inches and kept on saying it's for the layers which i didn't ask for a layer but she said it'll look better so i trusted. The layer is not symmetrical and way too short than what i asked. my right side has no layers and my left side has weird layers and one portion is just significantly shorter. Next, i asked for a highlight of blonde which i know my hair was dyed before so it could be harder to get those colors especially when it already looked brassy and dirty orange. i even came for a consultation first to see if she can do the color i wanted (second pic) and she said yes so i came a couple of days after. But after she already put the bleach and toner in she said she couldn't get the color and blamed because it was my hair colors fault. I understand where she's coming from and she's probably right but at the consultation she said she can do it and it was too late to fix it because she already finished it. i tried to tell myself it looks fine which it looks good but it's just not what i wanted and wished she would be honest with me at the consultation that it would be hard to get that color because it looks worse now. And the root where she started bleaching is one straight line and looks weird and unnatural which i thought highlights should be blended in more smoothly or start from the root more(see pic) i hate leaving negative reviews but i was just so sad after i paid $310... read more
