Great local book store. Since the closure of Yesterdays in Modesto I have been searching for a good bookstore in the area. Lightly Used is a good addition to the area. Great selection of older and contemporary books as well as fun offerings of blind dates with books. I also love their local authors support and see planets of more things to explore. Will be back and make it a regular stop. Would recommend to anyone who loves reading or those that are looking for something for the bookworm in their life. read more

Found a Gem!!!! This store has it all!!!! I went in for children's books for a baby shower and stayed to look for myself. Having been out-of the book world for a long time cause of busy work schedule, I was taken back to a simpler time in my life when books were all I needed. All of downtown Turlock is having a back to school sale on Aug 6th, but the prices are unbeatable and quit competitive. I am totally recommending this bookstore and will be taking everyone I know there and will be back again. read more

Very nice small used book store. Jenni the owner is really nice. Sometimes when I'm in a pinch I call to see if she has a title and she'll save it for me up front. I ask for recommendations when I'm in a reading slump and she always come through. The staff has read my kids books while I shop. The overall feel is friendly and welcoming. You could spend all day in there just relaxing and talking to the staff about their favorite reads. I highly recommend this place. read more

I absolutely love this place! Great selection of books and the prices are not bad at all. Sometimes I find some pretty new books for a good price. The lady that works here is always fun to talk with and is great at helping me find any books Im looking for. They have lots of clearance books for a 1$(hardcovers). Great selection of classics, romance, youth oriented, horror and mystery, biography's, fantasy . The list goes on! Today I went in again, found out this establishment is now under new management by David and his fiancée Marissa. Both were so amazing and sweet. David definitely had a passion for books and helped us with recommendations on authors that was in the same type of books I was looking for. i ended up getting two books and as I was checking out I asked if there was a hard cover of Eragon and he was nice enough to get one from the back. He also mentioned that they are now open everyday besides Monday till 8PM and they will be introducing Open Mic Night and maybe some music/a reading corner (if I heard correctly) They're definitely trying to rearrange and organize this book store to make it easier for customers. It'd be great if they implemented a rewards system or a money value system, maybe for every $50 get $5 off or every $100 get $15 off or something like that. That could definitely bring in more customers, overall satisfied and found 3 good book. Thanks guys. We will be back. read more

I used to work at the University and retired three years ago. This was my favorite place to go back then, as I love used books. Last time I was in the area this store was closed. Today I was in the area helping someone move and decided to check if it had reopened. To my delight, it was open. The store is as I remember, maybe a bit more organized now with an excellent selection. I browsed the stacks and found a book I've been looking for. At first glance I didn't see the price in the book and asked the young lady at the counter. She said it was either on the first page or on the back written on a sticker. It was dark in the store and as I found out later, the price was written in very light pencil and in small print. When I handed the book to her after not seeing the price, I mentioned that I had frequented the store back when I worked at the University and that I was glad to see it opened again. Here reply almost caused me to walk out of the store and leave the book on the counter. She replied to my comment about the store with "Do you want me to tell you the price now?" with a deadpan stare as if I was inconveniencing her with my comment. Many responses came to mind, but I simply responded "yes". Not sure what her problem was, but she came across dismissive and rude. I ended up buying four books. I had been looking for months for one of them, so I was not going to walk out without it. However, I'll never step foot in this store again. If you're looking for good used books, this is the place. If you're looking to be treated like a customer and not an irritation, don't talk to the help, you'll regret it. Amazing. read more

One of my favorite used bookstores anywhere. The owner is so friendly. She is very knowledgeable and down to earth. She knows exactly what she has in the store and where to find it. This is officially a 4 star review but I felt the need to offset some of the outdated and unrelated comments posted. It's a good used bookstore that is organized in a somewhat decent manner. They have a great selection of all sorts, but be prepared to browse. I don't recommend it if you are looking for a specific title but rather if you are just in the mood to find something that looks interesting. I have been here a few times now and have always had a pleasant experience and have always left with a few books to read. read more

Sorry (I don't care) I called looking for a book my son needs for school. Doesn't answer phone: I called all morning off and on from the time that say they open 9:30 till after my lunch (1:40) Didn't offer a follow up: I asked for the specific book we need. Rather then look it up he said Whats that (maybe he can't look it up.?). I explained and he said it's in such and such section if we have it. I said can you check for me I'm out of town. He said, I just bought this place and it's a mess. I have customers here. You will have to come in and look. I gave one last chance to earn my business. I said, "I understand, can you take my number down and check later?" He said you should just come down, sorry. I'm sorry too. When your a new owner and building and/or maintaining a customer base you go the extra mile. I would have been happy with the extra yard. I finally went in after longingly gazing as I drove past on my way to do other things in downtown Turlock for the last few years. It. Did. Not. Disappoint. At. All. This place is a maze of gloriously smelly (you know that good smelly) books (in all kinds of conditions) as well as comics and audio books and a myriad of other reader-friendly items. This place is a gem and David was kind enough to immediately offer us a quick tour of the place. Found three great books for a great price in wonderful condition. The world needs more of these places, please stop by and take a look! If you're a bookworm or know one, you'll see that it is beautiful in there. No exaggeration. read more

This is easily, the best bookstore I've ever been to. My favorite used to be one on the Sunset Strip in L.A., that dealt with a lot of rare first editions, and autographed stuff. This place is amazing. They had a first edition I had been looking for, and I just like the guy that runs the place. There's nothing like going into an old school bookstore, and having a person that works there, know his stuff and holding a great conversation. It makes going to bookstores or record stores (remember those?) so much fun. There's a movie coming out soon called The Bookshop, based on the popular book from the '70s. This place reminds me of the bookstore in that fictional 1950s English town. Let's just hope Amazon and other websites, don't destroy these small institutions we adore!!!! read more

I went to the store for the first time at the insistence of my daughter. She found Moby Dick there as a present for me. What a wonderful place! In the days of electronic books, this place is a throwback to a day when people actually turned pages and enjoyed the peace and quiet of reading. While a little cluttered, I viewed that as another opportunity to find a hidden gem. Everywhere I looked, there was some book I was interested in. Marissa was very helpful and pointed me in a couple of directions to begin my hunt for the right books. For those who are used to and expect the antiseptic world of Kindle and expect everything to be in its proper place, this store is not for you. This was to be my first visit to Lightly Used Books. I arrived at 12:45 on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. According to the hours posteon the door, the store should be open, but it is not. I returned to my car and called the store. Their listed number is disconnected. I'm not sure what's going on, but it's unfortunate that a bookstore that came so highly recommended was not open during it's advertised business hours. Moreover, how does one contact a business with a phone number that has been disconnected. I'm confused, and upset as I traveled from the Bay Area to visit Lightly Used Books. Updates to their information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you to Jennifer for informing me that Lightly Used Books is back in business! It was my first time going to the bookstore, and I was really excited to find some cool books. Unfortunately, while I was there my experience wasn't as I imagined. I was with my younger sibling and they had purchased books before I had, when they returned to me after, they showed me the great amount of pennies they had since I guess the bookstore had no other change. Once I went with my books the cashier gave us attitude for the cents we were paying with, saying "I gave you all that change don't you want to give some back" since we had gave her a dime instead of the pennies for cents... All I've got to say is that, it is not the costumers fault that the bookstore didn't have no silver change. Also, to mention her costumer service skills are not it, how do you look irritated and try to say something when the customer takes a bag for they're own books when you didn't even try to give us one once the purchase was already over??? I am so sorry I have to give this book store a thumbs down!! My husband and I love book stores! We are new to Modesto and the one major bummer is there are only two book stores here. So we went to Turlock with hopes of finding a gem, instead the women who was working there was so rude, she did not say "hello" or thank you when I purchased a book. So no matter how nice the book store could be, the employee was so rude we will never be back! This is a wake up call to people with businesses large or small, even if you are the only business in town, you will loose clientele! So be polite and friendly when customers come into your place of business! read more

This store is great. You can trade your old books for new old books. I was able to find the books I was looking for plus more. There is something for every reader. The sections are labelled nicely. Once you get the hang of how it's laid out, it's easy to find your way around. I could spend days walking the aisles looking at books. The staff is very helpful, if you want help and able to find what you're looking for. I even called to hold a book once because I didn't want to drive from Atwater if they didn't have it. ever since summer came around, i watched an empty storefront turn into this wonderful addition to the slow-to-progress historic downtown of turlock. while independent bookstores are sparse these days thanks to conglomerates like barnes and broders, it is nice to see one opening up instead of closing down. while i kept telling myself i'd go in at some point, it was a couple days after winter solstice that i decided to venture in to pick up some books for the kids in the family. i felt it necessary they enjoy literature outside disney books they're bombarded with because they feel the need for some fantastical life that's unrealistic. the store is laid out nicely. the vintage decor throughout makes you almost feel you're walking into a saloon and wish you wore your chaps and spurs. though, a recliner in the corner would make it feel like a library in someones mansion. the shelves look as if they've been built out of reclaimed woods, some glass cabinets showcase vintage pieces as if it was someones library and the while the books are sectioned in respective genres, they are a bit out of order. yet, that is the fun of going to a used bookstore, the hunt of whatever it is you're looking for. the owner was very helpful, guiding me to the sections but let me be and allowed me to parooze without telling me what i should or should not get. it was a nice sincere and quiet way to spend an hour on a cold winter day. after about $40 worth of book purchases (which was about 10 books) I would definitely recommend this place for used children books. i ended up getting some babysitters club, some environment for kids books and a huckleberry finn as part of the set. the prices are great, anywhere from under $2 to a bit more pricey for select rare pieces. a definite plus and i hope this store manages to stay open. read more

This is a nice used book store, with a decent selection. I'm a little puzzled by the negative reviews, as I have never encountered anyone being rude in the store. Personally I rather like the more relaxed, less hurried feel the place has. I enjoy browsing the many titles and authors without a clerk asking me every two or three minutes if I need help. Frankly if I really need help, I will seek it out. When in Turlock and looking for book to read, this is my first stop. read more

A very enjoyable little book store in our town. Recently I called about a book, the clerk found it and put it on hold for me and I picked it up within 15 minutes. Best part, the book was in good condition and cost only 4 bucks. Per posted hours they should be open but are not. This bookstore was excellent until one of the owners died unexpectedly. Not sure if the remaining owner is keeping it open or not. The last few times I was able to shop there (several months ago) the people working were less than friendly or helpful. Will plan to shop on Amazon. read more

I went in here about a year and a half and was not impressed. The guy behind the register didnt acknowledge me and the place was kind of a mess. I went again a few weeks ago and wow, what a transformation! The new owner is super sweet and is working on getting the store in order.
