I attended a fundraising event recently for a cause near and dear to my heart in Murphys and saw a basket they had donated. I was so proud that this bookstore I love would participate like that in their community. I highly recommend you check them out. do not come here if you are a person of color. I promise it is not worth supporting. I have been coming here for YEARS with my family and friends, and after my most recent visit I will not be coming back. every time we stop by, we usually browse for awhile and sit to see if we like a book before we buy. and that's exactly what my friends were doing this past saturday, we didn't think anything was wrong with that, seeing as there are nice comfortable chairs for patrons to sit in. however, after a little bit, the two young girls who work there started making comments about my two friends, who are both women of color. I noticed there were other people browsing around and reading books, all white people who were minding their business like we were. yet only my friends got comments for being in the store. I remember the girl "Ani" (pronounced aw-nee) and her sister or friend with darker hair made a comment along the lines of "I don't know why people read books in here, it's like picking out a redbull at a store and not paying for it". then why the HELL are there chairs in the middle of the store?? is it illegal for people to read books in a bookstore? people do it all the time, but I know why they were making these loud comments about my friends. they wanted to unwelcome them so they would leave, because they are people of color. my friends both told me they were planning on buying the books they were checking out, but they immediately felt very uncomfortable by this and left. I even stopped by a few minutes later and did the exact same thing as them. I sat in the chair for 20 mins looking at a book, and got 0 comments, because I don't look like them and I was not making them uncomfortable by that. to the owner, please look into the two girls who are always there. they do not treat their customers kindly. I hate to stop coming here after six years but I can't support a bookstore ran by racists who have nothing better to do with their life than to make comments about people who were going to buy your books. read more

Went to Books on Main in this charming little corner of gold country and what a fabulous stop! Very well organised with an inviting cottage energy. Not only is this bookstore oozing with charm but they also have a wide selection of literary genres and gifts. The owner is very kind, welcoming and helpful too! A well curated bookstore with an impressive array of books - considering the intimate size of this store. I picked up a small journal here and the staff were friendly as I checked out. I didn't get a chance to talk to them for long, but I suspect that they would be great resources if you have something specific that you are looking for. If you're looking for a small gift for yourself or others - this bookstore is a solid spot. I live an hour or so away from Murphys, but I love the town a lot so I make day trips every month or so and Books on Main is always on the itinerary! The perfect little local bookstore. Feels like it's right out of a Hallmark movie. This is a tiny book shop but you can tell each book is carefully curated. And there were plenty of wonderful options for books. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful - I heard them recommending several books either they or other coworkers had read. Books on Main is great! I love to read and the staff is very helpful. They will make suggestions and order books for you. It is a cozy cute store as well. I love the positive vibes that the owner has created with posters and slogans on the walls as well as the kind of progressive buttons and other merchandise! I bought two buttons-Black Lives Matter and Ban Guns, Not Books. I appreciate having these items available in a county that is very conservative. Great prices too! read more

If you are reading some of the reviews posted here on yelp or perhaps on Google you might be seeing a group of reviews that accuse this bookstore of being racist. As a long time resident of this community I do not deny that racism still exists among some members and tourists, however, Books on Main is absolutely anything, but. In fact, Books on Main is often the subject of hatred, because they openly celebrate our marginalized communities. I don't think it's easy to be a small business in a small town standing against an overwhelmingly conservative demographic that may disagree with some of these expressions of support ( also absolutely not making the assumption that conservative are all racist because that too is a completely unfair assumption as well). I do think it is incredibly unfair to accuse or assume or to make that situation about being a person of color. It may be fair to say the staff could've handled the situation with more tact, or been more direct in their concerns over the extended book preview, and those might be very fair comments, but accusing this small store that time and time again at their own expense celebrates the diversity of others is totally off point. I encourage you to rethink the nature of those reviews and focus on what maybe you didn't enjoy about the experience, but not make the assumption that it was anything to do with race. Kirsten is a champion for all, donates tirelessly to the community and schools, will curate reading lists, and has experienced as a mother of biracial children what racism looks like. Please don't make hurtful assumptions. read more

Very disappointed with this store for many reasons. The employees are disrespectful to guests/customers in the store. When the owner is confronted all she does is defend the store employees. It is inappropriate to treat people differently due to their race. Unfortunately, this store finds that to be acceptable and excuses it. Needless to say myself, my family members and anyone I know will no longer be frequenting or purchasing anything from the store. read more

What an adorable bookstore!! The owner was so helpful and I had a great conversation with her about fantasy books (a genre that is pretty unique)! She recommended a book to me that I bought and I was able to snag a few others. I wish I could have sat there by that fireplace forever and read my books lol. Favorite book store in the area! It is so quaint and cozy, the fireplace really makes it a nice place. They have so many books in their small store and they're organized well. I love the display of books they have on the front tables with New Years resolution themed books. They also have great gifts like literary mugs, fun socks, and candles. Prices are good. I probably hung out with my 2 kids in this book store for at least an hour yesterday trying to find a book to put me in a good mood. I bought my daughter's some books and although I did not make a decision that particular day I had some amazing customer service. I believe she was the owner of the shop and she spent a lot of time telling me about handfuls of books that she loved in had read. Beautiful place that I could have spent all day in! read more
