I didn't see a sign asking to refrain from using "Sir" or "Ma'am." However, if a sign politely asking you to not use gendered titles upsets you to the point you'd refuse to shop at the establishment, I'd challenge you to really ponder whether you use those titles out of respect or out of discipline and habit. WOW, these customer service people at LIGHT YEARS mean business! I had a return that got lost by UPS. They didn't wait for the return to process through UPS claims, they immediately replaced my returned ring, free. I cannot believe this kind of GREAT service, in today's market. As I was checking out of the store today, I noticed a sign at the counter that said "please refrain from using terms such as ma'am (and a few others that I don't remember because I was so shocked that i was being told what i can and can't say by management). I like the store but I will never support them again as I find it rude and disrespectful, especially when I'm a paying customer. The sign is not necessary and it offends those of us who were raised that such terms are out of respect. It will be light years before I ever visit that store again. read more

My wife and daughter are fans. I think they used to have locations in Chapel Hill and in a different spot in the Streets at Southpoint mall. They are currently in a new space at the mall but offering the same earrings, baubles and gifts. The style is more modern and funky rather than classic estate jewelry. I could spend hours in this store, browsing through their cute selection of sterling silver/gold & costume jewelry. The store is split up by type of jewelry, but the higher quality jewelry pieces are still super affordable. They get new shipment every week & are always trying to find fun & cute things. The employees are friendly & not overbearing, giving you the freedom to browse on your own unless you have a question or need something. Much prefer this over employees in other stores who follow you around everywhere, bombarding you with current promotions & not leaving you alone for 5 mins. This is probably my favorite store at Southpoint. They have a lot of very small, inexpensive stud earrings to choose from, which I appreciate because those are pretty much the only style of earrings I wear. They also have a little gift shop-type area with a great selection of fun socks. read more

I love all the Light Years locations I've visited, but I think the one at Southpoint is my favorite. Those Franklin St. spaces are just so tiny and claustrophobic. I end up spending way too long at the Franklin location just because there's so much merchandise crammed into one tiny spot and I'm always afraid I'm going to miss something. I love the jewelry and novelty gifts at Light Years, but the real reason I always stop in when I'm at the mall is because they have such a unique, eclectic selection of handbags. They're all usually under $50 and they're so colorful and funky. I bought a yellow purse there a few years ago that I've gotten more compliments on than any other item I've ever owned, and I keep hoping that they're going to order more of those bags so I can buy a back-up. They have a fairly wide range of jewelry at decent prices (some things for $8, some for $12, and some for $24-$36), and it's excessively crowded around the holidays. This is the best jewelry store for earrings. The selection of handmade, unique, and (some) local designers is unmatched. I have so many pairs from here. They often clearance small portions of their collection, and this is the best time to get a steal, of course. The only thing keeping this store from a 5 star review...the service. Whereas at the counter or when asked for assistance the staff is great. Unfortunately, in an effort to stop sticky fingers, the employees have picked up a creeper, watch you from the corner of their eye vibe. This Light Years is larger than its Chapel Hill counterpart, but for some reason I tend to favor the merchandise at the Franklin St. location. This one still carries cool jewelry (tons of earrings, some necklaces, and a case-ful of rings and bracelets), but I have better luck at the other one. I do like to swing in here for their hair accessories (cool barrettes and headbands), and their little section of novelty and gift-y items: photo mobiles, kool-aid colored hair dye, crystal ornaments, earring trees, silk clutches, and so on. read more

Great shop,poor service! I was in the store about 6:30pm on 1/10/17 and there were two associates completely engrossed in their own conversation ignoring the customers. I stayed in the shop for about 15minutes to see if it was only me they were ignoring or all of the customers. During this span they ignored all customers who entered and exited store. I had yet to hear a greeting or an how can I help you? I stood by the register with an item in my hand pretending I wanted to purchase and they didn't move. These two associates need to be coached, I wonder how many sales they missed out on that night? read more

Hooray for Light Years. Walking into the store makes me happy. I love their unique jewelry and trinkets. I bought many a headband there during my headband phase (the cause of my two-months-to-get-back-to-normal-receding-hairline I will have you know) and plenty of jewelry as gifts and a few bobbles for myself. They carry a great brand called "Sienna Sky" which I have only seen at art/craft fairs. I love their earrings - plenty of stud and hoop choices. If you are looking for one of a kind gifts. When a customer walks in the store, there is a friendly environment. The items being sold are just as catchy as the name of the store. Love everything from the specialized jewelry to the accessories to the novelty gifts. While mainly used for women, there is something in there for everyone. Their jewelry selection is a favorite and love being able to find that original piece for the occasion or everyday. It lasts a long time and rarely have a problem. Wish there was one a little closer in the Raleigh - Durham/Brier Creek area but other than that it's a great shop. Depending on the item being sold, the piece can be a little pricey, but overall reasonable and affordable. Keep up the great work, Light Years. read more

When I was in college, dropping into Light Years on Franklin Street and buying some earrings was a sure-fire way to turn around a crappy day or make a good day better. Now there are locations in Cary and Durham and the one I visit most often is at Southpoint. The Durham store is bigger, which is nice, but retains the same funky feel. I like Light Years for their broad selection of cute, affordable jewelry (particularly the afore-mentioned earrings). They also sell quirky gifts and home decor-y items. read more

I bought a necklace from LightYears for my boyfriend for Christmas. The necklace was to hold a Native American pendant he got when in New Mexico for his best friend's wedding. Clearly the pendant had a lot of sentimental value. A month after I gave it to him (note it was barely more than a month after I bought it for him), the necklace just fell apart, causing his irreplaceable pendant to shatter on a tile floor. I took the necklace back to LightYears, and they would not refund my money. They have a 30 day return policy. So even if your product is completely defective and falls completely apart at 31 days, they will not refund your money. I will NEVER do business with this company again. If you want to buy jewelry, I recommend going to a jeweler whose craftsmanship is worth standing behind. read more

I've honestly been going here for years and never had any issues until today. The store had signs up clearly stating "all blue topaz jewelry 20% off through the month of march" I purchased a ring with blue topaz in it before realizing this, and was told "it's for items that only contained blue topaz." This wouldn't have been such a big deal if the people who were working inside didn't go through and take down all the signs as we were still in the store. Extremely rude and distasteful. I will not be going back. Called in and talked to "the manager" who acted like they didn't believe me. Seriously unprofessional. read more
