i engaged this firm to consult then build//install a residential elevator. after months of discussions, site visits, planning and construction of a 3-story hoistway and accompanying demolition of an existing area of the home -- based on their direction and what was promised -- a deposit was given toward the elevator and its installation, and a contract signed. a couple of weeks later, the company missed a site meeting, then started to try to wiggle out of the deal. they claimed that they didn't have the ability to 'take on any more work' for 2023, which seems really odd for a huge company. they refused to budge, notwithstanding all the pre-planning, time, money and work that had gone into the project. we were forced to find another company, lost months of planning time, and suffered a huge amount of financial damage as a result, in addition to not being able to have the elevator equipment room where we were told it could go, nor the design planned for, as well as other costs and problems. the company is virtually impenetrable in terms of talking to someone who will help; they deny responsibility for putting me in this position, and are essentially washing their hands of the project. i would avoid this company at all costs. one of the worst experiences i have had in residential construction in 30+ years. the vendors response below is not correct: the deposit was paid in full; i relied on the contract, and the vendor is simply hiding behind the fact that the gc walked off the job. moreover, much of the advice i was given, including that an equipment room 50' from the elevator would be fine (trench dug, other construction done to rely on this) turns out to be erroneous. the vendor didn't 'refer' me to another company -- i was left in the lurch and had to source a company myself, and start the process over completely, remodel existing space for an equipment room, pay additoinal fees to the architect...and even have to pay more to the elevator manufacturer, as the delay has now result in a price increase at the manufacturer leve: they bobbed and weaved; they apparently are out of teh residential elevator businesss and the excuses below are simply that, and part of their corporate ethos. it's been a difficult, harrowing experience, and there is absolutely no grounds for this behavior. i am engaging a lawyer to try to recover my damages. read more

After calling the company who sold us the lift in 2007 we were told that they couldn't send a technician out for 2 weeks. I looked on Youtube and found a trouble shooting video online posted by Gamburd. The video was helpful but it didn't get our lift working. I purchased a Bruno Elite stair chair from Gamburd after getting quotes from 3 companies. It is a straight basic stairway but I wanted the 400lb capacity that only a few chairs including the Bruno Elite have. Manny from Gamburd listened to my requirements and showed how the Bruno met them. He answered all my questions about the manufacturer and model as well as Gamburd's approach to installing that chair in our house. He emailed me a quote that night and ultimately Gamburd's bid was the winner because their price was competitive, their service capabilities matched or surpassed the competition, and they were willing to handle the extended distance to an electrical outlet, saving me from finding an electrician to install a new one. The back and forth communication was easy and responsive. The equipment arrived from the manufacturer in a couple weeks as planned and the young men arrived early in their projected 2 hour window the next day to install it. Richard and Jacob did a good clean job and finished in less than 4 hours. There was a lot going on in our house that day but they walked me through the training and left me with no questions and a good feeling on my choice. All of my family members enjoy using the stair chair and it has enabled them access to the upstairs that they didn't easily have before. After a couple weeks I e-mailed Manny with a few questions and he responded promptly, giving me helpful links to YouTube videos on maintenance and troubleshooting. Later I brought up what I thought was probably a cosmetic issue, some marks on the rail. They responded by replacing the rail and carriage on warrantee, saying that it was a reliability and quality control problem that would affect the performance down the road (probably after the warrantees had expired). Manny and David have been very supportive and placed such efforts on quality and customer satisfaction that I feel somehow unhinged from reality. My husband is disabled . The chairlift was on top of the stairs and had stopped working. He was downstairs. I was all stressed out because I didn't know how he was going to get to his bedroom upstairs. I figured the battery was out so I tried unplugging the charger and replugging it after a few minutes. Luckily the green led light started blinking again. When the led light was steady, it started working once again but very slowly. I managed to get him upstairs and called Gamburd. Mike was very helpful and patient. We tried to trouble shoot and I desperately asked him to send someone to see what was wrong with it. Mike tried his best but couldn't find anyone to come at that hour. So He promised to send someone as early as possible the next day. The next day, Augustine (Augie) came promptly at 9:00 am. I was so glad to see him, a cheerful, personable man with a nice smile on his face. He surely and immediately eased up my stress. My chairlift wouldn't move so I called Gamburd and Ivan came before the scheduled time and was very professional and knowledgeable in getting the chairlift to work. Despite the urgency -- my mother-in-law, who is 87 and who lives independently in a two-story home, had fractured her ankle -- the technician to repair the Bruno chairlift, which Gamburd had installed in 2006, couldn't be scheduled until nine days later. When he arrived (neither my husband nor I was able to be there that day), he told my mother-in-law that the cost to repair the chairlift, which he claimed needed a new chair as well as a new charger and some electrical work, would cost $9,000 and would take at least three weeks because Gamburd would have to order the chair. Then, he said that he could do the repair the next day for only $4,500 through a friend of his who worked at a different company, which somehow, amazingly, did have the chair she needed. He promised that he and his friend would be there at 8 the next morning. My mother-in-law, who was desperate to have the unit repaired, had the technician's name, but nothing in writing -- not his telephone number or information about the "other company." Meanwhile, she had to pay Gamburd $200 for the service call, even though nothing was done. By the next morning, after talking with us and questioning the technician's diagnosis, price and, especially, his ethics, she agreed that we needed to cancel the appointment. I went to her home at 8 a.m. to intercept the technician. He didn't show up, however, and I spent the morning searching for another chairlift company. Around 10 a.m., when we still hadn't heard from the technician, I called Gamburd, asking for the technician's number. It turned out he was still at the company's office in Pacoima. I told him we were canceling the order and also asked him why he hadn't shown up at 8 a.m. Later that afternoon, the same technician called my mother-in-law twice, hoping, I believe, that she would reinstate the order. Meanwhile, I called Look Stairchairs. They called back promptly and asked me detailed questions about the problem and the chairlift model, figuring out that the issue was probably electrical. They were refreshingly professional, honest, punctual and helpful. A day and a half later, their technician arrived and in 45 minutes the chairlift was again in working order, for a total of $550, including the $150 service call. We will be using Look Stairchairs from now on. read more

From a complete showroom with most brands of chairlifts to compare, to customer referrals, to the salesman and installers every aspect was great. Our experience with Gamburd has been a pleasure. We had our stair lift installed over a month ago and it's making life easier for my mom. Having access to the 2nd floor in the middle of her day is a huge help. The chair quality and build is really nice. The railing is sturdy and the entire set up is really quiet. David, was straight forward and communicative from day one. He was happy to show us the models at the showroom and gave us all of the info we needed. He answered all of our questions and responded to our inquiries in a timely manner! He's a man of his word. We shopped around quite a bit and had other businesses drop the ball on communication or pricing. We were also able to negotiate a bit. that was much appreciated! The Jewish Family Services referred us to this company for a ramp for my disabled daughter. Regina, who I was told is the owner's wife, was the rudest business person I have ever dealt with on the phone! I am a senior citizen, yet she had ME measuring the steps, taking photos then emailing them before she was willing to send one of the workers out! Is this how she treats all disabled customers? Luckily my daughter has me to assist her, as she would never have been capable of such tasks! The following week Regina said she would "squeeze her in from 2-6 PM between appointments" adding "it could even be as late as 6-7 PM." Apparently our job was not BIG enough to deserve an appointment of its own and she thinks disabled people have nothing better to do than to sit home all day for 5 hrs. waiting on Gamburd to show up between appointments. Regina also added "We are doing a big favor to Jewish Family Services." For the record, JFS was willing to pay Gamburd up to $500 for a one-step ramp and Gamburd's "on the shelf" ramps go for approx. half that price. This was no charity case! The worker, Richard, came out and looked @ the stair but Regina had not conveyed any of the information, photos, measurements to him, making me wonder what the whole point was in my having to measure and photograph everything for her. He thought it was for a person in a wheelchair and took a photo of the ramp in front of the step. It looked like an ugly metal strip lying on the ground, not an attractive wood plank with a handrail. Regina decided they would not do it due to the fact the A.C. unit was there, alleging it could be a liability issue. It was apparent to me Regina was not interested in doing this "small job" right from the beginning, seeking excuses to discourage me all along the way. Maybe they should just stick with selling high priced electric chair lifts on staircases since it's all about the money with them and not servicing the disabled in the community. read more
