So we were invited to a pool party for our friends son's 3rd birthday. Heard there was going to be lifeguards on duty which is great because we have 3 kids that don't really know how to swim yet. There were two incidents ( twin kids!) who were in the pool struggling which everyone else thought they were having fun when they were actually struggling. I can't tell you how many times parents have said how reassuring it was to drop off their child once they saw the lifeguards on the job at our party. About 5 years ago we had a small party for about 15 children (between the ages of 11-13) and their parents. I let it be known that we did not have lifeguards so please make sure that you watch your child if they are not a good swimmer. One of the children who I found out later could not swim at all drifted into the deeper end where he couldn't touch the bottom. He started going under. His father couldn't swim either, my husband jumped in to save him. Thank God he was ok because it could have been so tragic. Our lifeguard for the party was Rick, who was totally diligent the entire 4 hours we had him booked for. He was kind with the kids yet appropriately firm when they were breaking any of the rules (running around the pool, etc.). I never once saw his eyes leave the pool. I used lifeguard help for my daughter's 5th birthday party and was very happy I did! It was a great investment. This was the first time we hired a lifeguard and I would absolutely do it again. Keith and Kelly came and I was impressed with how attentive to the pool they were and how they actively managed it (I don't think Keith ever sat down). When parents (and/or they) identified kids that needed floaties or life vests, Keith and Kelly made sure the kids kept them on and they kept the non-swimmers in the shallow water. Many of my family and friends didn't think a life guard was necessary because several parents swam too (some thought I was kidding when I said a lifeguard was coming), but by the end of the party everyone thought that it was a "good idea," "worth it," or even "ingenious." It was totally worth it to me because it was the first time that I was able to relax during a pool party. I was able to focus on my guests and not worry about keeping eagle-eyes on the pool. Other parent guests were also able to sit back and enjoy a drink instead of keeping close to the pool. While I didn't see it, my guests told me of at least one little one that Keith had to jump in and help. Once the pool was filled with little ones (a lot of them weak to non-swimmers), Keith stayed in the water close to them while Kelly watched from the side.
