WOW WOW WOW where do I even begin ? I am a facialist and I have had very bad neck pain, upper back pain and lower back pain from sitting down all day. For the last 4-5 months I have been getting tension headaches from how stiff everything was even with monthly massages. My MRI results: L5-S1: 11 mm posterior right central disc extrusion & L4-5: 3 mm posterior central disc protrusion. My story: I was sitting at my desk at work in January, the week I turned 40, when I felt a shooting pain down my right leg. I started doing youtube stretches and exercises and walking or swimming daily. I also saw a couple of physical therapists (one thought it was piriformis syndrome), my PCP who offered medications for the pain and told me to go to the ER if I become incontinent, a massage therapist, and a spine specialist who asked me what I wanted him to do for me, and it continued to get worse. By the end of August I could no longer sit or lie down. I slept standing, leaning against a stack of pillows on my bed for several nights. I had a few people tell me that going to a chiropractor helped them with their sciatica, so at the start of September I reached out to my husband's chiropractor, Dr. Nick. I sent a text to Dr. Nick briefly describing my pain and asked if it was something he would be able to help me with. He called me back right away and told me what he thought the issue was (the MRI confirmed he was right a few days later) and saw me the same day. When I came in, he already knew what was wrong with me, but he still took the time to ask me how it all happened, letting me recount my entire life history and my many theories on how I thought I got to where I was because he wanted to make sure he didn't miss anything. He concluded that he thought I had a severely herniated disc in my lower back and he showed me with the spine model what that looked like. He said he wanted to see the MRI when it becomes available and he said he would work on putting together a recovery program for me, but that day, he performed an extremely gentle adjustment on my lower back, and that night I was able to lie down for the first time in a while (just for a few minutes, but it was a good sign). I started a 6 week, 3 days per week program which included myofascial release, gentle manipulation, decompression, and therapy exercises with Sam. By the end of the 6 weeks, I was feeling 60% better, sleeping 3 hour stretches at a time before having to get up from the pain, with the pain subsiding after about an hour of standing. I continued with a second 6 week session and at about 9 weeks I was feeling 80% better and I started sleeping 8 hours straight with the pain subsiding after only about 10 minutes of standing! Every session Dr. Nick asks me the status of my recovery and he makes adjustments as needed. Sam is the same. We started off with the simplest exercises, but each session he gives me something new to try, pushing me to do more while making sure it's never too much. I was a little scared of some of the exercises in the beginning, but I've only gotten better. I actually can't believe how quickly I've improved! Looking back, there were signs I was having issues with my back that I ignored, like my back would get stiff after surfing or after sitting on the floor working on a craft in one position too long. I had a couple of friends tell me that I might have a herniated disc, but I didn't think that was the issue at the time. I know now that they were right and I wish I had done something about it before it got as bad as it did. I'm not 100% yet, but every couple of weeks I make huge leaps in my recovery and I'm glad I went to Dr. Nick and Sam because I know it could have gotten a lot worse or taken a lot longer for me to recover if I didn't have the right support. Maryorie works at the front desk and she is a valuable player in this too. When you have to see someone 3 times a week and you're not feeling your best, it's really nice to be greeted by Maryorie who is always super sweet and super professional. Thank you Dr. Nick!
