Aldi, like arch-rval, Lidl, stock a fairly limited range of mostly own-brand food, and weekly non-food special offers, such as DIY, motoring, outdoors, etc. By limited range, I mean that they tend to focus on a narrower spread of varieties of each product, I quite like this - because I tend to procrastinate... now which variety of houmous to choose? Regular, Peri-peri, red pepper, chilli-infused, etc. Keeping it simple speeds up my shopping no end! They now have a "deluxe" range too, like Tesco Extra Special or Sainsbury's Taste the Difference. For a city-centre supermarket, this is probably the best in Glasgow. Prices way cheaper than Asda, and a far wider range than the Tesco/Sainsbury's convenience stores. And with a proper fresh fruit and veg selection. This store is popular with students at the nearby halls, as well as Merchant City residents. Currently, twin pack red pointed sweet peppers are 79p - compared with around £1.80 in Tesco. 500ml Williams Bros beers are £1.60 or so, tinned tomatoes 30p, 6 large free-range eggs, 99p, cherry plum tomatoes 59p. The weekly super-six fruit and veg deals is epic, last week a bag of six oranges for 59p... amazing! A special mention has to be made for Aldi's Ribera del Duero red wine - this is absolutely one of the best budget (sub-£15) reds you can buy. Trust me on this, you'll impress the snobbiest of dinner guests with this one, it's awesome, and under £6. In summary, really good quality stuff, large range of fresh fruit and veg, good meat and chilled section, great booze, and who knows, you might pick up a bargain riding crop or air compressor!

Generally these days, if I'm in the City Centre and my shopping list consists of much more than eggs, milk and bread, this is where I go. Their range is just that bit wider than that of their nearest neighbours and that makes all the difference. I don't want to have to visit four city centre supermarkets to find cornflower, for example, so I just start here. The other advantage of a slightly larger store is that they have more price point options than your average convenience store. It still won't be the cheapest possible shop, but for at least some items they'll have the "budget", the "regular" and the "luxury" options to choose from. They also have space to run just a few more promotions and, as they insist upon reminding us, every little helps.

The self serve machines have been pretty temperamental lately, but the staff are always friendly when sorting them out. Oh, it's a REALLY busy shop - especially in the evenings.

Fresh produce, large selection of wines, beers, and spirits, and it even manages to squeeze in 2 'self service checkouts' which is entertainment in itself - it amazes me how students in the area, studying highly intelligent subjects, cant understand how to use one of these machines, "it's in the bag! *BEEP* look it's in the RUDDY BAG! It is however, a curiousity. Straight across the road from a Co-Operative and in close proximity to a Tesco as well, I don't know why they decided to open a store here on George Street. I wont argue with them though. They have a much better produce section than I expected with a really good bakery. They also have self service checkouts which is ace. The selection elsewhere is modest, but ideal for my needs. They are also open until 10pm everynight. Awesome!

Stupid self-checkout machines- there were enough staff members around that saw that I was struggling with the machine and instead of assisting me or offering to let me pay in a normal cash register (there were 3 right there)- they were mean and unhelpful. One old lady even scolded me for using plastic bags, which were available for free, to put a chocolate chip muffin and an apple- she said I wasn't allowed to do that and took the bag away. Now, I live in Germany/Austria/Israel and in our supermarkets, those are given for free. Sorry if it's not the case in Glasgow (the only sigh next to the small thin plastic bags said not to use too many since they are bad for the environment- which I completely agree- I grabbed one)- I didn't know and certainly didn't mean to misuse the bag, but to TAKE IT AWAY from me? What was the plan? surely it won't be used by another customer as it was "dirty" and full of chocolate chips. So i felt bad and the environment lost. Well done you Sainsburys staff. Rude.

I've seen at weekends like melon or even fresh asparagus for 20p. Sainsbury's are heading to the route of having little staff and more of those awkward self service counters. Overall the store has less variety & selection than a regular store but serves your basic need's.

Because I always go here after work and it closes early (i think it's opening hours reflect the surrounding office buildings), things start getting reduced at about 5 and I finish at 5 so always grab a bargain. I picked up half a swede, a small bag of new potatoes and a cauliflower all for the princely sum of 90p! They didn't have any vegan butter which I also planned to pick up but I will survive without it...for now. This place recently got self scanners which amuse me because as usual there was a man telling everyone to come use them but only 1 person on the actual checkout and a huge queue. Self scanners annoy me.

I find the security staff intimidating and rude I think one guy there has mummy issues and should really have counselling and not be taking his anger out on customers who do no wrong. The self service section is a joke as half of them have not been switched on and the one l used made me feel as if l just won the jackpot on a fruit machine in a pub, how can a shop justify paying a customer 62p change in 2p pieces. Ice cream that has been defrosted is being re frozen and sold again when l reported the issue to the duty manager he did nothing. Tesco sort yourselves out!

I was doubtful & did wonder if he'd got confused but nope, taxi man, you were right! Gold star. Another supermarket in my neck of the woods is always welcome as I have sort of fallen out with Te*cos...long story, but basically I only shop there if I really have to/have no other choice and it just so happens the 2 nearest supermarkets to me are both blinkin' T*scos! *grumble* SO, HELLO MORRISONS! :-) Only time I've been in a Morrisons is once to the Mozzers at Easterhouse/Fort, once to le Partick one and a few times to one doon South in that Norfolk. Always thought 'Meh' about them before UNTIL (da da DA!) I stepped into the wonderful, shiny new Mozzers at Barrack Street! Wow. I am a tiny bit sad in that I actually ENJOY supermarket shopping. I love looking at all the new produce they have in stock and I could honestly wander around the bigger ones ALL DAY (just about). ROCK AND ROLL!! Whatever, we all have our 'thangs' and supermarkets are one of mine, okay? Cool. Now onto this place - I actually walked around the first part of the supermarket saying 'Wow!' and 'Ooh!' to myself (and maybe a tad too loud at points...) looking at all the wondrous things! So many weird and wonderful vegetables and fruits ~ a few I've never heard of ever, let alone seen before. The amount of fresh veg/fruit/produce this place has is outstanding and (dare I say it) even BETTER than Waitrose! (Shock horror!) I also LOVED their funky cooling/keep fresh pipe system they had ~ every now & then pumping out cool cool air onto the precious things, I felt like I was in some mental veg-filled disco at one point (FIRE IN THE DISCO! FIRE IN THE DISCO!) in fact I even did a wee dance of joy at one (sad) point to see such a beautiful thing smothering and freshifying (?!) all the magical vegetables/fruits. Yes, I'm a mentalist. Their selection of fresh produce, not only veg/fruit ~ with your very own greengrocer on hand to help you should you need it (I have visions of people walking up saying 'POTATO?!'), but also their Fresh To Go section ~ making fresh sarnies for you from scratch, bakery, fishmongers, butchers, cake shop, delicatessen and their Oven Fresh counter ~ offering fresh roast chickens, pies, etc. really is what makes this supermarket super. I could've happily filled my trolley up to the brim with all the fabby fresh produce alone before I'd even reached the other aisles. Really like the layout ~ feels spacious and looks clean/tidy and bright too. Also when I stepped inside I totally forgot I was in (a not so great part of) the East End of Glasgow. My only (totally selfish/personal) gripe is that I wish it was closer to me and wasn't at the end of a bit of a dodgy street. Apart from that I LOVE this place and will be back.

This branch is one of their newest ventures and it is one of my favourite branches. Even the new gimmicks make me smile like the chilled haze over the herbs and stem vegetables. The store has the standard "Market Street" consisting of freshly made pizzas, cheese counter, cold meats, hot meats, butcher, fishmonger and baker. The only thing missing would be a candlestick maker but that is beyond the point. They stock a great selection across all the ranges and the staff are always there to help. Food on the counters is fresh and looks appealing. Displays always appear to be being filled and faced up. Bakery always smells like there is fresh bread ready to eat. Nice little cafe/restaurant which serves everything from a cuppa and a cake to a full meal (kids eat free on weekdays, not sure how that works not having any children) and flower stand at the front of the store. Plenty of parking and easy access from public transport. I like a nice in-town supermarket that has all the bits and pieces you will generally need. I wouldn't be a repeat customer if they didn't have good service.
