I wasn't sure where the cafe was in the park - if you're driving and wanting to park near to the closest entrance, park near the Lubnaig Road entrance and it's only about a 1 minute walk from there. The cafe is in the tennis pavilion and it's a beautiful restoration job, appealing from the outside and cosy inside. I didn't expect it to be quite so busy on a Thursday afternoon but nearly every table was taken - thankfully I managed to grab one of the last ones. There's seating for about 30 people inside (at a rough guess) as well as some seats outside if you want to brave the cold. There's table service so I had a quick look over the menu and knew that French Toast was what I needed for the day. Served with bacon or berry compote and for £7.50 I was pretty impressed with the portion - on lovely thick bread it was just the right size and a good amount of compote (I actually didn't need it all, which was a first). I love that breakfast is served all day and can see myself heading back here very soon. It's got a nice vibe to it and the staff were pretty friendly. The menu might be short but I actually prefer that over a really long menu where you can tell that nothing will be fresh. Notes: - kid friendly - dog friendly (outside undercover seating area) - wifi (password is at the till) - lots and lots of luscious cakes - table service

Based on this morning's visit it looks like they've got the measure of their local customers. Yummy mummies ( and grans ) were out in force with their babes and toddlers as were a fair selection of the park's dogs (accompanied by their doting walkers). Dogs are welcome at the outside tables and in the covered enclosed area along the front of the building. A waitress distributed some complimentary dog muffins which no doubt will ensure repeat visits - dog icecream is also available I believe. My dog loving but not dog owning companion was in heaven. The decor is bright and tasteful - love the unusual vintage chairs - and the staff are friendly and helpful. The fruit scone was freshly baked and one of the nicest I've had recently. Served with home made jam it was a little smaller than some but that's not necessarily a bad thing, some scones are so enormous they're a tad off putting. The food we saw going to other tables looked tasty, including a cloud of fluffy scrambled eggs. There's a small selection of foody goodies and well chosen craft items on sale.

It's far too busy (for some unexplainable reason) at peak times, the prices are appalling, the service slow and the food mediocre at best. This mediocre food is really what saves it from the two star treatment, as given the limited amount of local lunch time options, this still remains an option. Sadly. Though, if you are happy to eat only cakes for lunch, maybe this is not such a bad thing. As the cake selection is definitely the best thing this bakery has going for it. Therefore, I'd recommend this for a quick in and out job in order to pick up cakes for a leaving do or something along those lines. However, do try and time it well as you could end up at the back of a long and very slow moving queue if not careful.

The food was very expensive and I remember buying soup and a plain roll for £2.40... pretty steep! I do not recommend getting a bacon roll from here, the bacon was just put in the microwave which gave it a rubbery texture similar to that of an old welly boot. Not too appetising. It is usually very busy and you can often wait for up to fifteen minutes to get served in this small shop. It's always choc-a-block and you are always behind dithery old dears who can never find their purse in their Mary Poppins style bags. I have to say, they do have pretty moist gingerbread on offer which is always a plus! On the whole a handy little bakery but I've experienced better.

The extra good news if you are feeling guilty is that they are all made with organic and free trade ingredients. Everything is homemade and you can order cakes big or small for special occasions or because you just want cake. Why wouldn't you? If you prefer something even healthier they make delicious banana bread and carrot cake too. It's a really new shop, and thumbs up for being brave enough to take such a risk. They look like they're trying hard enough to keep the customers happy and coming back including delivery of gift boxes at a humble £5. Hard to argue with them really.

I dragged Stu out of his festering pit and we made our way to Grant's the Bakers. I had passed it several times while sprinting for the train and the smell emanating from the bakery almost caused me to forget all about the train and go and live in there. Hot rolls and hot drinks are available to take away at very reasonable prices. At 10.30 on a Sunday, the queue was out the door and spilling untidily onto the street. Builders, locals and hungover tramps waited patiently in front of the cake filled counter and sizzling hotplate of over-processed meats. The smell was fantastic. Thanks to the two wee wummin behind the counter the queue moved quickly. We bought 6 totty scones and hastened home to fry them! They were big, misshapen and had an almost meaty bite to them. This makes them high up there in my Totty Scone Hall of Fame. Yes, I do actually have a Totty Scone Hall of Fame. I am rather a freak, I do fear. Next time I think I'll go for an iced donut.
