Thanks to it being Sunday, street parking outside was free which is an added bonus. The staff were very helpful and friendly. I asked for my usual Chai but unfortunately they don't have it...yet! But I was advised to try the London Fog. Earl grey tea with honey and foamy milk, mmmm, very tasty! My friend got jealous so ordered one too. For food I had stacked pancakes and bacon. The only way these could have been better is by having streaky bacon rather than British bacon, but still tasty. I love that they hit brought the jug of maple syrup to the table, usually you have to beg borrow and steal at places to get more! Ben got a side of macaroni cheese because, why not. And he enjoyed it thoroughly, just the right amount of creaminess to the cheese. Very reasonably priced, great food, lovely staff. It's such a quaint little place, try it if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed!

Service was still really good, but their pulled pork is now a massive disappointment. Dry, tasteless mush. Luckily I went for the ribs and they were still excellent. Worth noting that BYOB price for a beer has gone up 20p to 70p per beer too.

It was my…read morebirthday and my sista from another mista Angela B. and I do like to have a wee day out for our birthdays as we are a week apart. I thought visiting the Southside for a wee change. It's somewhere I wouldn't normally go but Angela had been before and new some good places to visit including The Glad Café. We opted for a brunch and I had my favourite dish French Toast, bacon and maple syrup. Yum! I had a cheeky mocha and it just complicated my delicious mound of food goodness on my plate. The place was always constantly busy and it was like a tardis and much bigger than I thought. The entrance is just a door with a small shop beside it, once you walk down the corridor it just opens up and it was wonderful. It was bright and it's for all ages. I wouldn't mind seeing a gig here as they always promote local talent. It's a great project and I'm so glad, literally, it's became such a success.

Been wanting to check this place out since I first heard about it & finally, a couple of weeks ago,…read moreI got to go. Thankfully it lived up to my expectations of the place. I was only here in the bar for a drink after work but it is such a lovely and cool place to hang about it. Some might say living in the West End I am spoiled for choice for hip bars/venues but I really don't think there's anywhere WE quite like the Glad Cafe. It reminds me more of Stereo or Mono in that not only is the GC a great place to have a drink but also does really nice food (so I hear) and puts on gigs and other such events. It's what Shawlands/the South Side has been crying out for. If I lived local this would most definitely be my local. Beers on tap the evening I went were Brooklyn Lager, William's Lager and Caesar Augustus, West Munich Red and a Sam Smith's beer. This is a really good selection for a place the size it is. Prices were not too bad either ~ £3.50 for a pint of the William's Bros. lager. They also had some nice bottled beers too, including the Drygate beers. The wine list looked pretty substantial also and again, pretty good prices. I did have an issue with the West Munich Red beer in that it tasted bizarre/off but thankfully the nice girl serving let me choose another beer instead. I like the decor, furniture and layout of the cafe, it feels very boho and being in here on a Winters evening with all the wee tealights lit it was delightfully cosy & just what I needed after a long, tiring week. If you want to come here for food I noticed the kitchen stops serving at 7pm which surprised me as just assumed this was a place were folk could come for an evening meal but obviously it really is more a 'cafe' than just the name suggests. Great place, lovely vibe and providing that little bit something extra for the area ~ I'm a fan.

This adds to the dated feel, which is one of its main charms. That, and the hot muffin , ice cream combination, which extends the ice cream season into the winter. There is something nostalgic about this cafe, which is why I always order Bovril to drink and vanilla ice cream, despite the range of other drinks and flavours. The menu isn't extensive, and this is more like a sweet shop with cafe attached at times: it never gets busy, and isn't that great to sit in with more than three other people.

The Queens Cafe is a nice wee cafe too, with little red booths and an art deco set up that automatically makes you think of the 50s when Glasgow was littered with little places like this. The cafe is all but the same as it was when my dad was a young man, and the food, drinks and ice cream are all much the same as well. A few years ago the Independent did a list of the top 50 ice cream parlours in Glasgow and there was the Queens Cafe, pride of place in the list. Grab yourself an ice cream and take a nice wander in the Queens Park. A summers day gets little better than that.

We went to the 6.30pm sitting on the Saturday night so I was already aware of the good reviews from the Friday night, and it totally lived up to my expectations. Two long tables in the function room of the Glad Cafe, with reggae on the stereo and Bollywood on the big screen. Sitting at one big table encouraged people to chat and the whole place was chilled out and fun from the start. The rum punch didn't have quite the kick I was hoping for but it was yummy (and I was with a friend who was off the booze for January so I got hers as well!). The Sev Puri starter was awesome - lovely and spicy yet fresh as anything. When it came to the main courses, I really struggled to choose between them - I was in a party of three and we ordered everything between us and shared. The Curry Goat was fantastic, but in my opinion it was just pipped to the post by the Vanu Pau, the spicy potato burger served with chilli and coriander chutney and tamarind sauce in a Morton's roll. I'm not sure if that's because my Scottish tastebuds can't see past a dish which is essentially a potato fritter in a bread roll, but it was absolutely amazing. If I worked in the city centre, I'd be in Babu Bombay Street Kitchen every day having one of those. The other two dishes were both perfectly lovely and I'd happily eat them again, but the Curry Goat and the Vanu Pau were my two winners from the night. The ginger cake and chai combo to finish were also fantastic - seriously, there wasn't a bad dish served all night. It was a heck of a lot of food, but it was so yummy that I hoovered it all up and if I hadn't been so full I'd have happily have had more. All the staff present were friendly and relaxed and the evening was great fun. For £20 including the rum punch, I thought it was excellent value for money. The girl I spoke to from the Glad Cafe said this was the first event like this they'd done and they had been waiting to see how it went, but already by the Saturday night they were pretty sure it was a success and they'd be looking to do more. That gets a big thumbs up from me - I can't wait for more nights like this.

One great starter followed by 2 out of 4 main choice selections (I had an excellent butter chicken that wasn't sickly buttery, I'm looking at you Mother India's Café, and goat curry) and then a sublime ginger cake with an excellent Indian tea all for £20 was grey value. That included a cool rum punch served in an old bottle too. Glad café is a perfect location for such an event and I hope some other vendors will come back and carry on the battles!

Gizzi opened just along from the very recently closed Coffee Station today (Monday 2 February 2015) so I popped in for a very quick visit. It's a narrow space and yet they have quite a bit of seating. At first I thought this was just a coffee/cake place, but somehow they're also doing pasta and pizza. Pasta such as lasagne, penne arrabiata and macaroni for around £5 eat in. The stone baked pizza options are also pretty simple: margherita, inferno, Italian sausage and misto and again, around the £5-£6 mark. As I was just making a brief visit I grabbed a couple of pieces of raspberry jamaretti (yes, that's amaretti biscuit with jam in it) which I'm going to eat for dessert tonight. The guy serving me was super lovely and welcoming, and seemed busting with happiness about their first day. I can't wait to pay it another visit.

Gizzi Espresso Bar, formerly Caffé Armando. Family-run,…read morefamily-feel cafe with incredible pizza! When I first moved to Shawlands over ten years ago, I always walked past this place as it looked like a basic greasy spoon. About a year ago I finally went in as I fancied a hangover roll with something better than slice (square sausage to you Weegies) on it. I was shocked at how good the Salsiccia and roasted peppers on focaccia was. Then they bloody closed down! Thankfully this was just for a long overdue re-fit, and they were back open in a few weeks. What a difference! Having now tried the pizza, I can say the decor now lives up to the grub! Across a half dozen visits plus numerous takeouts, I will say that the standard is very good for the grilled sandwiches, salads, soups and pasta. The coffee is Italian Aroma supplied, reasonably priced and above the (admittedly rather poor) general standard for Glasgow. Service is always warm and friendly, a definite benefit of a family with a long experience in the trade. My usual gripe as for pretty much everywhere in Scotland, tables could be cleared-wiped-reset a bit faster, but this is from a used-to-be-in-the-trade viewpoint, and have never seen a customer inconvenienced by it. Now the pizza. Let me qualify this; I have eaten several kilos of pizza from Bella Napoli over the years, and even ate from the Crolla's previous premises at Italmania in the city centre (showing my age?). Domenico Crolla has justifiably won loads of international awards as a pizzaolo, and will probably continue to do so. Well, the pizza at Gizzi is hand made from scratch too, by seasoned Italian hands, and the results are just as good. Super thin, with random pockets of crisply bubbled dough and the odd deliciously chewy bit, everything you could want proper pizza to be! Makes your face and your belly smile, and causes strange noises of longing to elicit from those sharing a table with you. Add to this the happier, friendlier atmosphere in Gizzi, and I know where I would rather spend my cash. Other reviews have already mentioned that Bakery47 supply the pastries, so no need to go into detail their, suffice to say they are uniformly excellent. Barring some catastrophe, they have a customer for life.

I've often slowed down long enough to peer longingly in the window, drawn in by the impressive shop front, admiring the comfy warm interior and awesome cakes. This shop boasts a fine selection of tasty, sweet treats. They don't appear to serve anything savoury, so this would be perfect for anyone like me with a sweeter than sweet tooth. When I sauntered up to the counter, I was greeted by a lovely server behind the counter who was happy to engage in a wee bit of banter. Unfortunately, they didn't have any non-dairy alternatives to milk, so I couldn't have a hot chocolate, but as they had a nice selection of tea I wasn't too bothered. Confronted with the choice of so many beautifully presented home made desserts, I was stumped. After ogling the plethora of dainty delectables behind the glass for some time, I finally ordered me a nice Caramel Apple Pie and a strawberry / mango tea and settled to chill out with my book for a wee while. Total price? The handy dandy price of £3! Fantastic! According to the shop window, this lovely new establishment also provides cakes to order, including wedding cakes. They're definitely worth a wee look in if you're ever in the area. Support the purveyors of perfect pastries! :P
