I usually go to center nails nearby, but yesterday I was in the neighbourhood to get a fresh acrylic set and learned that center nails had raised their prices. I was worried because with what i set aside for this set, i wouldn't be able to tip there. I remembered that a set was $10 at Lian and figured if it wasn't great, i wouldn't be out much anyway ( it was actually $16, which is what i used to pay at center. Anyway i regret going so much. These nails are FAT and do not taper to the cuticle at all. They looked grown out when i left. Very trashy looking. Definitely get what you pay for. Can't wait to ho back to Ben for a fill. Hope he can fix this disaster. I guess it's a fine set for the price if you are not picky, just the kind of fat set your aunt lois had in the 90s. Stick ons from cvs would look better read more

Lian Nails is close to 24th st mission BART which is convenient. The place is outdated, chairs worn, doesn't look very clean. I walked in and they were empty. The tech did not acknowledge until said hello I'd like to get a full set. I was asked to pick my polish from an OK selection, I chose the shade "cotton candy" by Verity. A simple pearl color, not gel. The lady who did my nails didn't say anything but payed attention to detail and was gentle with the files and drill. GoodI wouldn't go here for a detailed set, but for a simple quick set I'd definitely come back as they're inexpensive. Update: All my nails have cracked off doing simple tasks, mind you I get my nails done often. Usually just get fills but wanted a new set and my nails never break off. The result wasn't bad and the lady that did my nails was nice. Extremely unclean. I went here to get my legs waxed. I was taken to a back room that could only be a storage room and I was made to lay down on a USED towel! The lady who did the waxing kept reusing the strips over and over until my legs were just ridiculously sticky. The quality of strips were really poor and the threads started coming out. To top it off they had no respect for my privacy and another lady kept barging in every minute to share the one tin of wax that they had. Was very dissatisfied with this experience. I swear, sometimes the best stuff is right under my nose and I don't even know it. Lian Nails would be one example of this. I pass it every day walking to and from bart. The scene: lots of people waiting in the front with their kids running around and screaming, the staff hollering at each other in vietnamese, small, cramped, sort of run-down looking...mission local ladies getting scary long-ass acrylic nails put on while their boyfriends text on motorola sidekicks outside and check me out as I walk by...just another day in the life, really. People in SF love to get uptight about nail salons that aren't super prim and proper and perfect and professional in every possible way. I used to be one of those people because I worried about sanitary stuff, etc....but really, I mean, let's face the facts here ...it's a rough world out there...I've backpacked through central america, i've done tons of stuff that most "nail salon snobs" would probably never do anyways...so if something hasn't taken me out yet, I doubt that going to an ever so slightly more ghetto nail salon will! Okay, to be fair, I did bring in my own opi nail polish because I couldn't deal with their no-name neon, metallic-y colors (see, I can't ditch my elitist self completely!) I've been here a handful of times because it's dirt cheap and really close to 24th St. BART, despite the filth, inconsistency, crowds, indifferent staff and sucky selection of colors. I even went a few times and got a pretty good foot massage with my pedicure. However, last time I went was just so wretchedly horrible, not only will I NEVER go there again, I felt compelled to get my money back and warn others. The pedicure was painful. Really painful. She made both of my big toes bleed with the cuticle nippers and then had to pour that super stingy stuff on my open wounds to stop the bleeding. Good thing I don't have a bloodbourne illness, and hopefully the person in the chair before me didn't either. Crappy massage. It wasn't even a message really, she more just slapped some lotion on the tops of my legs. Lame. The manicure was even worse. I tried to ask the fellow a question about the difference between gel and acrylic and he didn't understand me, which was really frustrating, and he did such an atrocious job-the acrylic was all lumpy. The worst thing though, while he was really hurting my fingers with both the nail file AND the drill, I repeatedly said 'ow' and tried to pull my fingers away from him, it was obvious I was in pain, and he didn't even care or say sorry. I even said 'Can you please be more careful' because he kept hurting me. Grrr, what a jerk! I was seriously on the verge of tears when I left, I was so frustrated and nursing my wounds. And my nails looked like poo because there was gnarly scabs on them from him filing away my skin. Is that nasty or what? I get my nails done so they look good, not so they look like they went through a blender. I brooded about it for days before I went and asked for my money back. I could get that place shut down, just based on how filthy it is and how they don't sanitize any of their instruments between clients. It's disgusting. So basically, yeah. Don't risk it. I started going to Queen's nails on Mission and Fair. Yes, it's a little further away, but it's still super cheap and fast, and they do a much better job, and it's clean and quiet! read more

When John was here, I'd give it a 4 star because his personality and overlay skills were amazing BUT they probably scared him off because they're a bunch of c-words that are flat out rude and will mean mug you if you're paying with your ATM/visa. yes that was a fugly run-on and I'm a Lowell alumni. Oh ya. Had to try someone else once in his absence one day and I swore this joint off. Learned he left and when I called to make an appointment, I got hung up on because I won't see anyone else. I only like this place because it's so cheap and they're quick (only because they want to rush through me to get to the other customers). I've been here about 5 times for nail repairs, polish changes, pedicures and eyebrow waxing. And they do a decent job on the designs. BUT. It's so dirty (worn out chairs, stains on the carpet) and you have to wait for like 15-30 minutes. And most of the staff don't smile or anything. I only like the young guy who makes the effort to be friendly and chat it up. Today I went to get a polish change and one of the staff actually started removing my nail polish when I was sitting in the waiting area. I thought that was weird and unprofessional. Finally after 20 minutes of waiting, I got ushered into one of their stations to get my color change. I tipped the guy $2 and did not hear a "thank you", nothing. I thanked them on my way out and heard NO RESPONSE. It's unfortunate since they are so cheap and do good designs, that I am too pissed off to go back. i was really iffy about going to this spot based on the reviews. you def get what you pay for. my full set was $16, paulene did a great job. ive had better full sets but for $16, im happy with the outcome. parking is bad. this place is walking distance from my home so its not that tough for me. the salon itself needs some cleaning. Well first let me start off by saying how dirty that place is. I came in for a pedicure and the lady sat me down on a dirty chair, which later i noticed there where cut dirty nails everywhere. I asked if she can clean it off and used her hands to swipe them away, and didnt rewash her hands. The pedicure was horrible she rushed it as if there were people waiting... ohh did u forget to mention that there were no plastic bags on the pedicure tub, made me wonder if they even sanitized their tools. Which i highly doubt. Before she put the color she asked me if i asked for a pedicure as to reaffirm if she should massage my feet. Smh i was left wondering what did she think i came to do...?? Lol anyways, she only rubbed my feet for approx 2 sec per foot.. she applied the color and told me to walk to the dryers but left my sandals and didnt offer to bring them as she sat back down to get on her phone. I come here so often they just smile at me right away and say hi. I'm always in a rush so I time my s*** perfectly to make it here before they get busy. And they get hella busy! Sometimes it's standing room only. They are so damn cheap and they do a fine ass job. I get a manicure AND pedicure AND eyebrow wax for $26. The staff is always nice and attentive. This is the only place I go to have my eyebrows waxed. I've heard horror stories from other salons about infections/ingrowns/ripped off skin. I have never had any of those issues here. I came here on saturday the 15th to get my nails done, a pedi and wax my eyebrows. I had my son at karate so it was very convenient to walk up the street to relax for an hr or so. my white tips were done Ok, the lady didnt seem to comfortable doing nails. she also did my pedi and she butchered my feet. I was bleeding all over, and she just kept digging on my skin! not only after I told her she was hurting me and that she needed to put some alcohol on my toes she very reluctantly did so. I also noticed they dont sanitize their tools properly. she re-used the tools that she used on my hands on my feet. IT IS CHEAP....AND YOU DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. This place is the best deal in SF - a manicure is only $8, the technique done by the ladies is excellent. However, the place is not clean, the nail polish colors aren't good and it is the ONLY place I've ever gotten my nails done at where they don't open a new packet of clean or disinfected tools to use on you. In summary, I would bring your own nail polish color and your own tools including nail clipper, nail file, etc if you want to get your nails done here. Otherwise, I'd avoid for sanitary and health reasons. read more

You walk in and the women working are miserable, they barely even speak to you then get frustrated when you haven't picked a color already. It's dirty and the women were not nice. They are sweet people but I have to be honest, I don't think I can get a mani/pedi here anymore. I guess I may have arrived a little late so they were tired, but I don't think that it's an excuse to do a poor job on my nails. After they were done my nails were unevenly painted....I know how the heck is that possible? Some parts were lighter than others and it was extremly streaky, was my nail polish dry? Even then they should have informed me of this instead of letting me waste my money on a poor job. I had never gotten fake nails before coming to Lian and the last place i went to for a manicure made me bleed (eek!) hen I came to Lian with my friend, they were very gentle with my hands and the nails I got looked great and were sturdy! OK. I have been going to Lian nails for years but haven't gotten my nails done in quite some time. I got married and needed a quickie nail job i wasn't in sf so i went to the first one i found. I mustve been spoiled by Lian cause i got the job done and paid way more and the nail job was really really bad but what could i do right? I was getting married in a few hours. After a week and a half with the nail job yesterday one of the nails was coming completely off and it looked bad! I rushed to Lian to get them taken off and redone. All i have to say is AMAZING!! And you can get your brows done for $6! I've gone elsewhere and so far nothing or nowhere has topped Lian Nails!! read more

About 4-5 years ago, I would go to Lians almost on a regular basis and get a full set because they USED to offer free HAND DESIGN (not air brush) for a new full set. I was a fan! Free hand design? Other places charge like $2-$5 PER FINGER depending on what you want and that's just RIDICULOUS! However, there was this one day I will NEVER forget that made me HATE Lians (well one particular guy there). I was waiting for a long time to get a full set and FINALLY I got seated and there was a young guy (he looked kinda gay to me) assigned to do my nails. There WERE people waiting and I think it was about their time to close so this guy was RUSHING on doing my nails. I got irritated and told him "slow down" and he just kept going as fast as he was before so I told him again, "slow down!" that must've bust his bubble because he BURST out in front of the whole f****** nail shop and YELLED at me "WHAT DO YOU MEAN SLOW DOWN? THEY'RE NOT MESSED UP!" at that point I just wanted to reach over the table and slap the shit out of his b**** ass! What the f*** kind of shit is that?! I know he will still remember my face if I go there because I actually DID go there one time after that incident with my friend but I didn't get my nails done there, she did and that GUY just so happened to be there. I had my money tips on from another nail shop on 24th and Treat (GO THERE! THEY'RE VERY INEXPENSIVE AND THEY DO A EXCELLENT JOB! I JUST CAN'T THINK OF THE NAME RIGHT NOW BUT THEY'RE ON THE CORNER OF 24TH & TREAT) and he asked me where I got them. I said "the spot on 24th and Treat" and he was like "for how much?" I said, "$26.. why how much do you charge?" he said, "for that $30-$36" I said, "BOYYYYYY YOU TRIPPIN!" and then he started talking Vietnamese with his coworkers and it gave me this feeling that he was talking about me..
