Just what we need in our neighborhood! Locally run by a sweet couple and loads of fun options to choose from. They moved from Empire to be here and we are so lucky to have them! We came here after having lunch next door and it was just the perfect spot for a soft serve. Portions are generous and pricing is unbeatable. $3 for a serving of pretty LARGE swirl. OK, this place is amazing. They all these handmade goods and some really good ice cream. If you are a parent is the perfect place to take your kids for a quick little pitstop they even have free popcorn. The service is just so amazing. They're really nice people. They even have this really cool milkshake called the avalanche milkshake even the small is super big. They even have taste for all of the candies. We wanted to go to Beau Jo's at first, but there was an 1 hour wait. So we decided to get ice cream instead for the kids . We arrived and we noticed they also served burgers etc. So we decided to dine in. Let me tell you : the customer service was SUPERB! The owner(s) made us feel so special and the new guy was going above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The owner's wife was super artsy and draw on our food boxes - it was so cute. Man we loved this spot! Eccentric and over the top both inside and outside- the owners are both caring, knowledgeable and really want you to have the best experience AND food! Staying close by in a fantastic VRBO we walked over and are so happy we did! We both got the sliced brisket sandwiches with coleslaw- so so yummy- we would probably do chopped next time. And then to finish it up we had a thick shake comprised of a chocolate base, then added coffee an Oreos! Like real Oreos! Fantastic! My daughter and I were driving through on the way back from Winter Park. We stopped in empire and had ice cream and avalanche parked at Louis sweet shop. The people inside are absolutely fantastic. And strangely, the one police officer in town bought her ice cream for us. read more

So it's Sunday afternoon and we drive through this little town. We get to the picnic spot and realize we want food at our picnic. So we drive back to the little town and stop at this super sweet place. The owner was super friendly and his wife did an amazing job creating my burger, when I tell people how weird it was the simply lay out of flavors obviously makes me sound pregnant... which is not the case. I had an elk burger with ghost paper cheese, peanut butter strawberry jelly AND bacon... the burger comes with chips but I order sirachi French fries as well. WOW. My boyfriend thought I had lost my mind, but man it was so good. Burger wasn't over cooked and everything blended so well. I will be going back to this place to try out the home made shakes and a different burger combination! On the other hand, I want this place to stay in business for many years to come, so yes, give them your business! This place has been a must stop on the way home from Winter Park for more than a decade now. I used to go just for the amazing ice cream shakes. Fabulous flavors, you choose thick or thin, and can even add yummy malkin flavor. However I've been more adventurous lately and have tried other sweet offerings, of which they have an amazing and creative assortment. Such as their sweet deviled eggs (white chocolate, rice crispies). Also, the Apple Pie - tastes fresh out of the oven, has perfect crust, and beautiful balance of cinnamon. This place is amazing. A real roadside gem. Stopped here after doing some hiking and boy am I glad we did. The burgers were amazing, the shakes were old school huge, and the menu makes me want to live here so that I can try everything on it. On the next drive through, I'm planning this as a stop because I need to try several more things. The burger I got was a special posted near the register. Something with a raspberry chocolate sauce, onion rings, etc., etc. It was sweet, tangy, salty, crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth amazing. One of the best burgers I've ever had. And if that sounds too weird for you, their menu is ridiculously long and posted all over one wall. There's guaranteed to be something for everyone and anyone. Our shakes were really good, They had a very very good gluten free bun for my burger. Our kid's meals were off the hook with amazing sides and treats. And the service was also excellent. We never leave without a couple of their ridiculously huge peanut butter cups... stuffed full with the REAL STUFF. These ain't no Reeses. We're talking chunky, sticky, salmonella-free goodness here. Homemade all the way. The butterscotch haystacks are also beyond delish. Crispy chow mein noodles dipped in butterscotch candy and stacked? Whaaaaat? They've also got hand-dipped shakes and malts. So after hiking up Bierstadt this weekend (with about 10,000 of my closest friends), we decided our bodies' gas(trointestinal) tanks needed refilling. Where did we go? You guessed it (?), just up the hill to Lewis Sweet Shop in Empire. Again, their Q is excellent (see first review), but this time I decided to actually taste the now much-discussed chocolate covered bacon. Peggy, the owner told me it's become one of their more popular items. She said her son dreamed it up and that on the weekends she sells over a hundred "slices" a day. It's well done bacon, cooled and then dipped in dark chocolate for a little over a buck a piece. With all this lead-up you're probably thinkin' "hmmmm, I bet it's really great." Well, if that's what you're thinkin' you're semi-right. In fact, it's just OK, and not so yummy that I'd get it again. The Q's still very good (pulled pork and brisket, chopped or sliced), as are their homemade pies and more normal sweets. So there's always a reason to stop while drivin' through this one horse town. But next time I'm there, I won't try one of their other weird little tempters (e.g., they also make up "deviled eggs" that are fashioned out of white chocolate and rice krispies they turn yellow for the yolk). Three stars for the Q and an extra half star for trying to be creative! read more

Not sure how to rate this. Been here so many times over the years and we stopped today with the kids. Was told it would be a 20 minute wait for a chocolate shake. This was of course after we paid. Not sure what to recommend first. Everything here in my opinion is amazing! Not only the food, beverages or delectable chocolate offerings but the whole atmosphere is like stumbling into a side room at Willie Wonka's factory. Any time I'm driving on I-70 I make it a point to swing by the Lewis Sweet Shop. The burgers are great, hand made patties with all the trimmings, fries or the onion rings are a must as well. At this point I've probably had everything in the menu and have loved all of it. The shakes and malts are to die for. Get it extra thick and the ice cream raises up four inches above the top of the cup. They don't use bottled flavors, it's all fresh flavors and additives. The homemade chocolate is awesome, I always grab a variety for the kids as a surprise. To add to the great food, sweets and atmosphere the folks that run the place, Bernie and Peggy, are so friendly and pleasant. If you are taking food to go they will package it up nicely just like mom would pack your lunch for school as a kid. If you are on I-70 passing Idaho Springs or maybe on 40 heading up to Winter Park Lewis Sweet Shop is a must stop! Try it once and I'm sure you be hooked as well. On weekends I've stopped by and they have had a nice two man band playing classic hits. Great place to stop if you have kids, they can watch TV or play the giant Jenga game. read more

I've driven past here countless times, and I'm glad we finally pulled over to check this crazy place out. The thick shake we had was amazing, and the menu looked like a long list of homemade comfort food. I did have one frustration, however. I wanted to order two bowls of chili to bring home and was told that is the only thing they have that they won't serve to-go... even after I suggested they just put it in a malt cup. Side of the road gem! My boyfriend and I were passing through the mountains and it was snowing so much that we had to turn around and head home. On the way back we stopped here just to pass some time really and we were pleasantly surprised to find a cute little gem. The people there were so friendly and welcoming to us. We got the small ice cream which would def. have been plenty to share but we got 2 in total and to our surprise got enough ice cream to probably fill an XL cup. Very generous!! Super delicious. I LOVE THEIR MILKSHAKES!!!!!!!!! Mmmm nom nom nom! My favorite is peanut butter, banana, and rootbeer... mmm hmm. It's something that you never thought would go together, but man, oh man, it does and it is GOOD. Their JR Burgers are good too, and only $1 if you go before 1pm, I think? Or noon? My dogs also love their dog treats... basically giant milkbones dipped halfway into some sort of frosting with sprinkles on it. If I was a dog, I would think that they looked SUPER good. Oh yeah... I'm also a fan of their fried stuff... fried mushrooms, fried okra, fried zucchini... mmm! I don't have the weekend experience at these places. What I had was more like a friendly version of an Easy Rider scene: stranger walks in and 10 people at two tables simultaneously turned their heads to watch stranger stand at the door. "Hi!!" I said as brightly as I could muster after getting up at 5 am. They said hi back and sort of chuckled at themselves. They have three kinds of chili--what I'd call a spicy Cincinnati red, a medium green chili, and a very hot green chili. Being from the Midwest, I only order green chili where the staff speaks Spanish. I got the red, no onions, but with cheese and a coke. It was good. I enjoyed listening to the locals talk about bringing musicians to town. But a 4.5 average? Dunno. read more
