I have stayed at Hotel Duval multiple times for long periods, and the Level 8 Lounge is always my favorite part. The drinks are tasty, and the view was great--perfect spot to unwind. We stayed the night at Hotel Duval on a Friday evening and stopped up here for small dinner bites and drinks. The sunset view was beautiful with plenty of seating outside to view. This place only had two bartenders with no one actually waiting the outside tables. Food was brought out to us but we would have to order at bar. The buffalo chicken dip tasted like it was lacking on buffalo dip but it was ok. Drinks were ok. I'd say this place was average (no real complaints) but the sunset view was worth it. read more

The view is beautiful, but the service is not good. It took several minutes to be acknowledged. The bartenders mostly catered to the same individuals without noticing incoming clients. Pizza was ordered and it took about 30 minutes to come out. The food was not hot. It was barely warm as if it had been sitting in the kitchen for a while. The server admitted the communication is not the greatest with the kitchen. It was ordered again and it was slightly warmer. Very disappointing. Very cool atmosphere, it's nice to sit outside, have a drink and view the city form a rooftop bar. I didn't have any of the food but the drinks were great and they had a pretty decent selection of bourbon. The mixed drinks were very tasty and it was reasonably priced for a more upscale establishment. I'll go back and try the food at some point. Beautiful sunset, good drinks of well qualified bartenders, I didn't have the food but we did order once the cheese and meats platter which was very neat. Terrible slow service. Drink menu is pricey and limited e.g. the beer list doesn't even say what style each is, much less any description or from which brewery, and from where. Also the server had no clue, so was no help. The bartender of course gave us the highest price glass if wine when we asked for her help, then she included 20% tip on the check so it was about $45 for two glasses of wine. The location is a not so great, and while the rooftop view is good for sunsets, it overlooks a scrappy neighborhood and the tables & chairs are in bad shape. Fancy. Kinda. I thought there was a dress code, so I wore a nice dress, but I saw people in jeans...so I'm not sure that it's really enforced. However, it's nice to have a rooftop bar here in Tally, that way we can enjoy the three lovely skyscrapers that we have. In all seriousness, though, this bar is very nice and the rooftop patio is great. On these cooler fall evenings, it's absolutely perfect and there's no need to "bar hop" because you'll be content just staying at Level 8. Bartender was a little sassy with me (sorry I didn't order a fancy drink?), but I expect that they must deal with annoying drunk college students all of the time, and have to be a little sassy. Level 8 has become one of the premier upscale bar/lounges in Tallahassee. Whenever people want to go out and get dressed up while trying specialty made drinks level 8 is usually the place to go. Located at the top of hotel Duval the lounge is... You guessed it on level 8 (not to be confused with Shula's)bus the modern lounge complete with cocktail tables 4 wells and vip couches outside there is always a place that you are able to sit. The staff are all experienced and will be able to make whatever you need whether it's on the menu or off the top of your head. On certain days they serve food from their small kitchen but other days it is just strictly drinks. Definitely one of the classier establishments in Tallahassee. read more

Quite a classy bar on the 8th floor of the renovated Hotel Duval. If my son ever decides to graduate from Florida State we'll stay at this hotel or across the street at aloft. Back to the bar - a beautiful view of the city on the outside deck, which was being swept by a monsoon during our visit. It looked nice, however. Nice selection of wines and beers and a surprisingly mixed crowd. Definitely a cut above the normal bars in Tallahassee, which cater to the students. Great rooftop bar. Level 8 is located on the 8th floor of the Hotel Duval. If you are looking for a classy night out with friends or a date, this is your spot. It is definitely more fancy then many of the other night spots around town. I love coming here because it gives me the opportunity to get all nice and dressed up. There is an indoor area, as well as an outdoor patio. The patio has a great view of the city. Although we don't have many skyscrapers, it is still a beautiful spot to look out and enjoy the night and company of your friends. In the winter they have heaters so you can still enjoy without freezing! The crowd is an older crowd than you will find at many of the other bars around town. You won't find too many college students, as it is 21+ and a lot less wild than other places. They have great speciality shots and drinks. The bar tenders know what they are doing. It can get crowded, so you will sometimes have to wait, as is expected at most good bars. Ladies, Wednesday night is free champagne for girls. Enjoy your free bubbles till midnight! There is also different specials/themes each night. Check out their website! This is my spot for celebrations or a fancier night out. I have to mostly agree with Shana W., but as we went a few weeks after she did, it was slightly better. (I'm rating it a 2 star, but it's more like 2.5 stars.) The bar was definitely better stocked than what she reported - still no snacks or appetizers though. The bartender was friendly, however, when we ordered a "greyhound," he had to ask what was in it (a very standard grapefruit and vodka beverage). The atmosphere was almost big city, but not quite. The lighting was up just a little too high, there were football games playing on the TVs (How about a little pretentious Fashion Channel or even some canned music vids to bring up the hip quotient? I dig my sports, but I'll go to a SPORTS bar to watch the game, right?), and the hottie bartender was wearing flats with her skimpy outfit. I'm jus' sayin', if you're shooting for a certain milieu, you gotta get the details right. But the place seems to be on an upward trajectory, so I'll definitely be going back. read more

This is a pretty harsh review. The lounge is new, but I was super disappointed. Here's hoping they can get it together over the next month or so... The views from this lounge are spectacular and the atmosphere exudes class. But our server was totally ignorant--first, my mom ordered long island iced tea, and she said, "We don't have sweet tea." Thinking she misunderstood, I repeated my mom's order, but got the same answer. So then we tried ordering mojitos, but they didn't have the stuff to make them (understandable, first weekend open). Finally, I asked what drinks they did have and everything she listed was a simple vodka mixer. Bleh. So I asked for gin martinis and she replied that she'd have to see if they could make that. I was really appalled by this exchange, considering the bill for 2 basic martinis was $21. As if this weren't enough, they had one bartender and the bar was PACKED. It took forever to get our drinks and check out at the end. If I ever go back, it will be for the views and I'll probably pre-game and only order 1 drink. Then I'll leave and head somewhere else for the rest of the night (like I did the first time). Urban Tallahassee stated that Level 8 adds world class flavor to Tally, but I feel this is a bit of hubris. The place looks nice, but it's all fluff. Good interior design does not a classy lounge make. read more

Probably one of the most upscale type of bars up in Tallahassee. You take the elevator in Hotel Duval up to the Level 8 Lounge and you are welcomed to a cute rooftop style bar. It is not too popular with the locals since it is attached to a hotel and is probably a tourist place, but it is very chill. Sometimes you need to escape the college crowd and hangout with those older professionals. With a small dance floor in the middle, one bar with good drink choices, and a DJ booth with some tunes. The outside is one strip with tables, chairs, and couches laid down so you can enjoy the view of the city. While Tallahassee is pretty country and does not offer too much of a city feeling, this is probably as close to that feeling as you can get. It is nice for those nights where you want to feel a bit more classy and just grab a few martinis or cosmos. The staff was very nice, but some things were a bit off. The music was just a tad too ratchet for the style and age group of this crowd. The drinks are hella pricey too. I probably would not come back here too often, but once and a while you should treat yourself. read more

I'm not a Tallahassee night life expert, but I had a good time at Level 8 while I was in town for a wedding over the weekend. Level 8 is a rooftop lounge on top of the Hotel Duval. The rooftop view was great, but along the balcony things start to get a little too narrow for my taste. In some areas more than two people makes for a crowded and an uncomfortable experience. I mainly felt bad for the servers who I watched go back and forth squeezing past people all night long. read more

Lots of seating and couches, yes, but it's very difficult to walk along the row of couches, especially because it's a dead end. Maybe that's part of the vibe they are going for, close and classy, but I personally don't like how small the bar is. There was a weird mix of people for a Wednesday night- some (very drunk) girls celebrating a birthday, some moms/cougars, older creep men, some younger creepy guys (and by creepy I mean the way they look at people), but for the most part I'd say people in their mid-late 20s.
