The food was delicious, the decor was adorable and the service was wonderful. Would definitely recommend!

The tea tower with sandwiches, scones and desserts on the top tier.

This place recently opened, and as I love afternoon tea, I knew I had to try them asap. They are located in the basement of the Reed Opera House. As of yet, their online presence is on Instagram. You can make reservations by messaging on there or by calling. I would recommend reservations. And make sure you are contacting the business located in Salem, Oregon. There is another business by a similar name in another state. The atmosphere is lovely, think an enchanted Victorian style tea room in a forest. Piano music was playing in the background. The owner is incredibly friendly and made us feel welcomed and at home right away. The tea selection runs towards flavored teas, but there are some more traditional offerings as well. I went with the Darjeeling, and my tea companion selected a Forest Berry Pu'er. Both were excellent! Each person gets their own pot of tea. Soon after the tea was served, the soup arrived. It was a nice addition to the tea tower items. The day I went it was a lemon chicken and wild rice soup. It was amazingly good! Wonderful flavors and the perfect amount of soup. The rest of the food offerings came soon after. There were four savory items: chicken salad sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches and a creamy salmon spread on crackers. All were fresh and excellent. The cucumber sandwiches had strawberry slices along with the cucumber, which was a different but good addition. Next were the scones, served with a clotted cream facsimile and apricot preserves. Real clotted cream is notoriously challenging to obtain or make in the US, and the owner admitted that she had found a reasonable alternative. I appreciated her frankness, and felt like her recipe was an excellent substitute. The scones were rich, had the perfect pull-apart texture, and melted in your mouth. The apricot preserves was perfect with the cream and scones. Lastly, there were orange glazed Madeleines and lemon possets with a strawberry compote on top. A posset is a dessert where sweetened cream is thickened to a pudding-like consistency by the addition of lemon juice. Both desserts were delicious! The posset was especially delicious and the strawberry topping went well with it. The service was awesome; the owner chatted about the food and the recipes and checked in many times to see if we needed anything. The amount of food was just right, and was comparably to a hearty lunch. This place is fantastic! I am so happy to have a place to get a wonderful, traditional afternoon tea here in Salem. I will absolutely be back!

Cute little quaint tea spot located in Salem at the Reed Opera house mall. There are a bunch of little cute shops on several levels. The tea place is located on the basement level. We made reservations for our high tea experience over a month and a half ago to celebrate my Birthday. We were so excited to try a new place. The staff were all nice, friendly and helpful. I tried the spiced almond chai tea and it was delicious. My stepmom ordered the caramel snickerdoodle and my friend tried a different flavor. The tower of food had a nice variety of sweets and savory items. Just the perfect amount to nibble on while you share stories and chat with your friends/family. An overall nice experience. Be sure to make reservations because it seemed busy and they had to turn people away that didn't have reservations. Will definitely be back again.

What a fun little place in the basement of the Reed Opera House. We were greeted by very friendly wait staff. We especially love the shrimp soup and the little French cream pudding. I love all the twinkle little lights. I think if I go back, I would definitely try a different tea. I'm not a big fan of fruit flavored tea so it was a little bit difficult for me to choice. Such a cute concept we will definitely come back in the future.

Since the internet never lies, I had to verify for myself. I wasn't disappointed! Are they the best? I'll have to continue my research to say definitively. The cookies are fantastic! I will definitely be recommending Sewell when the discussion of cookies comes up, which it frequently does during conversations with me. Service was quick and helpful when we asked about a cookie that we didn't understand. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about but all I wanted was a cookie so no problems there. If you are looking for quality cookies or anything else to satisfy your sweet tooth, look no further. Well, stop here, enjoy your treat and continue your research, but you'll be back to Sewell Sweets.

My fiancé and I were looking for a bakery to make our wedding cake. We approached Sewell Sweets…read morewith excitement -- submitted an inquiry, made follow-up calls, sent emails, and confirmed directly with the owner before visiting. What followed was pure frustration. When we arrived, the employee had no idea about the cake box listed on the website and offered to call the owner when we raised the pricing discrepancy. While helping us, she was also audibly complaining about another customer, saying she "couldn't even wait 45 seconds." We ended up paying more than the advertised price and were only told after the fact that in-store pricing differs. All four cakes went in the trash. They were dry, stale, and one tasted so off that we couldn't take more than one bite. $48 for product that was completely inedible. When we called to report it, the employee showed no empathy, made no apology, and had a noticeable attitude. When the owner called back, I was calm and polite. I was hoping for basic acknowledgment, given we had planned to spend significantly more on a wedding cake there. Instead, he led with camera footage, misrepresented what I had said, declined my offer to return the cakes, and ended the call with nothing but silence and "I'll take it into consideration." Maybe it was an off day. These things happen, even at great businesses. But a great business apologizes, asks questions, and tries to make it right. None of that happened here. What makes this experience stand out isn't just one bad interaction -- it's the pattern. Unanswered emails. Misinformed staff. Inedible products. Dismissive phone calls. And then a same-day public response crafted to discredit rather than reflect. Do yourself a favor and find a bakery that actually values your business, your event, and basic human decency. Sewell Sweets is not it. --------------- UPDATE: The owner has replied to this review on Google, and while I have no interest in a public argument, several claims in that response are inaccurate and anyone reading deserves the full picture. We were not attempting a random walk-in tasting. An inquiry was submitted early-to-mid March, a follow-up call was made on March 18th, a follow-up email sent the same day, and we spoke to the owner on March 19th -- during which he confirmed he had seen our emails, that our date was available, and that he would be in touch. I told him we would be coming in the next day, exactly as his employee had instructed. We followed every step we were given. The owner did not apologize multiple times. He opened by citing camera footage -- for a quality complaint -- then told me I had claimed a cake was dropped on the floor, which I never said. I described the taste as "off" like he said, which is not an insult by any reasonable standard. There was a lot of silence and he just said "I'll take it into consideration." Twice. That was it. At no point during any of our interactions did we raise our voices, argue, or say anything disrespectful. We were nothing but polite. Also worth noting -- just because someone else didn't complain, doesn't mean our experience didn't happen. For someone who described an extremely busy service day, not a single positive review appears to have been posted that day, which goes to show not everyone shares their experience. In fact, this is only the 2nd negative review I have posted in my entire life and the only one that is food related. The owner claims he looked "carefully" into our experience -- yet by his own account, in just 25 minutes he managed to receive word from his employee about my call, conduct an internal review of the situation, review emails, confirm proper handling and quality of preparation, speak with three separate staff members about our interactions, and check camera footage -- and still had time to call me back. That is quite a thorough investigation for 25 minutes. Finally, it says a lot that a lengthy response was written the same day to dispute a customer's experience, yet an email sent over a week prior was never acknowledged and a call from days before went unreturned. ------

Grab some specialty coffee from Storm coffee in town got in our car and headed down the road for a long road trip. Popped open the goods and immediately was met with disappointment . The raspberry tart was ice cold and hard maybe partially frozen? Likewise, the sausage turnover was very cold inside. Not sure if that's how they sell them. In my opinion they should offer to at least heat them up or warn the customer that they're not ready to eat. On the good side, the chocolate chip cookies were delicious. Unfortunately, we were too far down the road and did not have time to return. This is not a condemnation on Turner bakery because I've heard nothing but fabulous things but this was just our first experience unfortunately but we will be back but we will ask more questions obviously . Not sure if these are refrigerated from the previous day or night or they got that cold from opening till 11 AM when we picked them up? To readers just be sure to ask questions and if you think it should be warm, ask them to do so.

Their excellent variety of pastries, breads, and cakes make them one of the more standout worthy panaderias. This is as local as it gets. The shop caters to the local community in Salem, which is home to one of most underrated and budding Mexican scenes in the state. They have a fresh daily selection of various baked goods and pan dulce specialties. The shop is a bakery through and through, but also is a pseudo-convenience store. They also sell pre-bagged pastries, avocados, snacks, hot sauces, and drinks. Their conchas are excellent. I also really enjoy their bigotes, brocas, and chilindrinas. Like any good bakery, they also have special occasion cakes for sale, which can be customized if ordered ahead of time. Their Mexican king cake (rosca de reyes) Cookies and other flakey pastries, such as the abanico are often sold out before the day is over. Prices are not wallet breaking and the service is outstanding. Spanish is preferred and so is cash. There is no seating here, and it's never been so busy that I haven't had time to browse for what I needed. Parking is tight for a shared lot, but manageable overall. Anyone who is in the area and likes a good piece of bread(s), owe themselves a visit to Emilio's.
