This is a no fuss, no muss, great place to go for a wide beer selection, cheap cocktails (a lot…read morewith amusing/"dirty" names), and decent-to-great food. It's clearly popular with the local student population for the drinks, but we decided to have dinner here because I was really craving some moules frites, which I saw was one of the popular dishes here. We started with the shrimp and avocado salad to share, which was simple yet fine. It was a really hot evening so we didn't want too heavy a meal. My mussels were quite good, small and tender, a very generous pot and well-cleaned/cooked (I don't think there were more than 1 or 2 unopened ones in the bottom.) I could have used a little more broth with them, but a minor quibble. My sweetie got the steak au poivre; our waitress first asked, "Well done?" (I guess they assume that's what Americans want? The horror!) to which I said no, make how the chef likes. It came out perfectly medium rare with an excellent crust, and sweetie declared it the best steak he'd had anywhere in a long, long time. Dessert was "pineapple carpaccio", which was fine for a really hot night, but for 7.50 Euro I would have expected a bit more than three slices of pineapple and some whipped cream. Still, overall we had a very good meal and I'd go back for the drinks, the mussels, and that steak!

La Gueuze sits immediately west of the Pantheon, with outdoor seating available (if construction is done), but the view pales in comparison to the list...all Cantillion, La Becasse and...wait for it...Mort Subite! RIDICULOUS! I've been to bars from San Francisco to New York and over 31 cities in over 20 countries on 4 continents, and I've had about 2,000 different beers, and this is the only place I'd get on a plane and fly to. DO NOT MISS IT OR YOU WILL RUE YOUR LIFE!

While staying in a boutique hotel off the Republic Square neighborhood, our jetlag caused us to…read morewander the street at unholy hours of the night. Hail Aux Petit Tonneaux, open when no other cafe/brasserie/bar was. Seriously a godsend for jetlagged travelers. Despite being open such late hours, the service is always friendly, professional, and you can feel assured that they'll take care of you. When there are clearly inebriated customers, them employees take care of them, too. The food is your typical cafe fare, and pretty decent. Nothing to write home about, but it will fill you up. Especially if you're feeling peckish for some chips after a few drinks. Speaking of drinks, this place has a great selection of Belgian ales. On draught, they've got Leffe, La Chouffe, & Edelweiss. We also tried an interesting, tart bottled lambic , Morte Subite Kriek. Solid joint. If I lived here, I'd probably become a regular.

Prices here are very reasonable for Paris, charging almost half for certain dishes than what you will find in the tourist areas. Good service and menus available in English and French. I stopped by very late at night about half hour before the kitchen started to close so we were a little rushed but understandably so. The escargot was too garlicky I don't know if it because we came as kitchen was closing but the snails seemed a bit over cooked and not very well balanced. But still decent since I love garlic. I had the duck steak in a creme goat cheese sauce very much like a blue cheese steak without the mold colour, came with fries and salad that was also very good. My wife tried the duck confit and as usual very tasty but a little bit on the dry side. One thing I found very unpleasant but is pretty common in Paris is the smoking. Staff were standing in the doorway and just outside the window where we were sitting blowing smoke into the restaurant. Being from Canada I found it quite aggravating but there are clouds of smoke everywhere in Paris. You can try to sit inside so it's not right in your face but it will likely blow in And be staunch anyway.
