The bacon was just strange chunks of ham that looked like raw ground turkey (to give you a visual). As a rule of thumb I usually try to avoid seafood places cause I don't trust them to have decent non seafood options but as the only non seafood eater in the group I had to roll with it. I have been going to Schum almost once a week for the last 6 months, and usually for lunch. They always have selection of three a plats du jour. No matter what I've ordered, it was always good. Fish. My favorite is that with the plat du jour, you can order a café (thé) gourmand (café or tea plus 3 mini desserts - usually come with a financier, a type of mousse, and a créme brulée). The cost for the main dish and dessert is 17€. Can't beat it. The main server/bartender is very nice and his helper/server is also cordial. I recommend that you come when they first start serving lunch, so you beat the crowd. Once the crowd is there, the service slows down quite a bit. So if you don't come early, be prepared to be there to stay at least 1,5 hours for lunch.

The quality of the service and the food depends on the staff's perception of whether you are a local or a tourist. Even if you speak French, if the staff thinks you're tourists, you will get an indifferent service at best or just completely neglected, where as the servers were much more attentive to the locals at the table next to us. Also, most of our food came out dry and over cooked, and we had to track down our server to get some water. It's a shame that there's such discrimination in a city that depends highly on tourism industry. Especially with the summer Olympics coming up, it's concerning that the locals would have such low regards for the visitors to their city.

The escargot was too garlicky I don't know if it because we came as kitchen was closing but the snails seemed a bit over cooked and not very well balanced. But still decent since I love garlic. I had the duck steak in a creme goat cheese sauce very much like a blue cheese steak without the mold colour, came with fries and salad that was also very good. My wife tried the duck confit and as usual very tasty but a little bit on the dry side. One thing I found very unpleasant but is pretty common in Paris is the smoking. Staff were standing in the doorway and just outside the window where we were sitting blowing smoke into the restaurant. Being from Canada I found it quite aggravating but there are clouds of smoke everywhere in Paris.
