    Learning to ride Hershey
    Tyler R.

Booked a trail ride this Sunday for my partner's birthday since she'd been hinting at wanting to try horse riding for a few months. None of us had been on a horse before so this would be an interesting experience. Weather wasn't looking great as we showed up to the ranch. It'd been pouring the day before and was expected to rain more in the afternoon. The owners told us they had cancelled the morning ride, and would probably be cancelling the afternoon one, but since we had already come out there, they could take us for a 1h trail ride if we coule get ready to go quickly. They saddled up the horses and gave us a quick crash course on how to control them with the reins and most importantly, stop. Each horse was picked for the comfort level (and size) of the rider. Our horses were named Hershey, Casper and JW. After that, we were off. A short drive from the ranch was the trailhead. We set off following the lead horse along the trail with a beautiful view of the mountains in the background with low-hanging clouds framing the whole scene. Even with the overcast sky it was gorgeous. Along the way we trekked through the trees and across a small creek before they took us back to our car and took some photos of us with the horses. We were really pleased with the service and our experience there. The ladies who took us out were accommodating and friendly. Definitely worth the price and at such a short distance from the city, there's no excuse not to give it a try if you've ever wanted to ride a horse.

My favorite part of our trip to Vancouver. The staff was fantastic and the horses just stole your heart with their individual personalities. I wish we would have taken the 2 hour tour instead of 1. Yanif was our good guide and he was so much fun! He was very personable and such a great asset to out tour. Besides the horses, he made our experience memorable. I highly recommend this place for a fun outdoor activitiy in Vancouver.

The owner, Hanif is incredibly patient with new riders and gave everyone an opportunity to saddle up with an appropriate horse for each level of rider that was in our group of 5. Then we drove a short distance from the farm to the trail that runs along the Alouette River. The trail was beautiful with sightings of multiple Heron and Eagles in the area and many bear trails, although fortunately we never encountered any bears! The horses were so majestic and kind to us all. My horse was Archie and he was an absolute sweetheart xoxo. Our trail ride was 2 hours long which was perfect. We are looking forward to returning again ASAP because our group agreed to celebrate all our birthdays horseback riding!

I can't believe how amazing this place is! The staff were so nice, had everything we needed, and made sure we got the right horse! I had Cola and he was great! We went through an awesome river and trail! We even got to see a bear up close! Best part of my vacation, I didn't want it to end!

My all time favorite horseback riding experience! Highly recommend it!! The trail was amazing and the views were breathtaking. Bring a visor and sunscreen!

Never left a review on yelp before. But, we had such great time that I just had to say something to thank these guys and gals at the ranch. To be honest, we were quite afraid of horseback riding in the start but the trail scenery, special bbq and line dance event all made this an unforgettable experience.

The hosts are very welcoming. This place is the place that you want to come back. Horses are lovely and tamed. We had such a wonderful experience an enjoyed every bite of it. Special thank you for taking us into the river, It was a bit of extreme but unforgettable experience. Thank you so much to have us.

My girlfriend and I had such a great time on our 2 hour ride through the river. So beautiful, peaceful and relaxing (we're from US- L.A.) ! Great folks running this ranch and really very obviously love their horses. Happy horses who were very affectionate toward us, so adorable!!! Thank you to everyone at Leghorn Ranch !

Zsa Zsa asked us to be there at 4PM for a 4.30PM ride, and didn't show up to the park until around 5.10PM - she had overbooked and there were two people there that had to be sent away (a family of four). They were debating and talking for about 15 minutes, after she was very late. She didn't acknowledge being late, apologize or anything. All we heard was her yelling at her young helpers because they weren't doing something right. After the whole debacle, we finally got on our horses and started our 4.30PM ride at 5.45PM. The horses had been riding since noon and had NO BREAK in between the rides. They were moving slow, and were tired. My friends horse buckled forward and was dragging his hooves, she was extremely scared and told Zsa Zsa she was going to get off the horse in case he was going to fall. Zsa Zsa didn't seem to care and kept riding forward. We felt our safety was at risk. Zsa Zsa's horse was out of control and it made for a horrible ride. We'd call out to her to ask her for help and she would just yell back and say we weren't doing something right. We got back to the park after 7PM. This was an hour ride that cost us half a day. We all had important plans and they got cancelled. She did not respect our time, our experience was not fun at all. There was nothing pleasant or tolerable about this ride. I will NEVER go there again and will recommend others to stay away as well. The horses were not treated well, and I will be reporting it to animal services.

When we phoned to confirm on the day of, their cell phone was no longer in service. We drove out to Maple Ridge anyway and according to directions, arrived at the horse corral shortly into Golden Ears Provincial Park. No one was there at appointed time. Waited 30 minutes but no one came. So we drove further north to Gold Creek and had a lovely time walking the trail to the North Beach of Allouette Lake.

I definitely agree with previous reviewers. Aidan has very nice view for her business, and horses. She is so respectful, and friendly! I love having her teaching me how to work with a horse. She teaches me how to be a leader, how to read horses' body language, and how to be a great rider. I recommend this place to everyone! This place is very different from other barns and horseback riding schools, and that is why it is the nicest place I've ever been to. You can see that horses are very calm and relaxed. I feel safe around Aidan's horses! Aidan keep doing what you are doing!

She was very patient with me, walked me around to meet all the horses and then we groomed Neesha, a beautiful black horse. I was tentative but she showed me and gave me the confidence to perform all the tasks and helped with the hind hooves when it was a little more challenging for me. We lead the horse around and she showed me how to use my intentions to guide the horse. She is so gentle with the animals and really tries to get that across. Once I was comfortable leading the horse on the ground I got on a very thin saddle. And from there I was lead around while learning how the horse can feel my body in order to determine the correct action. And then I was on my own! Directing the horse by myself was so rewarding. It is only the beginning of my adventure but I would hands down recommend her if you are a novice like myself. She also teaches more advance riders and although I cannot speak for those riders, I think she would be a wonderful teacher for all levels. And just mentioning again how gentle her methods are!

Located just down the street from Richmond Country Farms and just shy of Riverport Entertainment…read morecomplex, Blue Meadow is a lovely riding facility in south east Richmond. It's really easy to get to as the bus to Riverport stops right at Palmberg, and it's just a hop and skip down Steveston Hwy off Highway 99. Blue Meadow has both an outdoor arena and a covered arena (not a completely indoor arena, but sheltered) which is great for our wet climate. The area footing is excellent. It's not soggy and water-logged, which can be a problem in Richmond as we're so close to sea level. The farm is three acres--plenty of room for the horses to graze and run around--and is owned by a family who leases it to the barn manager Yolanda Bloomers. Yolanda has school horses available for lessons and there are also boarding facilities. Blue Meadow has certified Equine Canada instructors/trainers who coach numerous English riding disciplines including dressage and jumping. The Equine Canada certification was important for me when researching a riding instructor, and as I don't own my own horse (yet!?), I needed someone with school horses available. I've recently started taking lessons with Yolanda who came highly recommended from other barn friends. When I emailed Yolanda, she suggested I first come and observe a lesson, so I could see her teaching style. I really appreciated this! It was so great to see her interacting with a rider to see her style, her mannerisms, and her competency. I definitely wanted to take lessons! I've had a couple lessons with Yolanda already at Blue Meadows, and I *definitely* intend to keep going. The price for a private lesson with use of a school horse is fair--equestrian sports are expensive--and I also think it's great value. What I really love about Yolanda's teaching style is that she explains the "why" of things--when this particular exercise is useful, the benefit of lunging in both directions, or how to do this weird terminology thing. Instead of shouting at you from across the arena, she either uses a small microphone and fanny-pack speaker, or walks with you (not beside you, but comes down to the end of the arena you're working in). She also gives the rider ample notice, like a GPS in the car would say "in 500 metres, turn left". I really appreciate that Yolanda gives positive feedback with the constructive criticism. I've worked with a lot of kids, and I've also worked as an instructor (not horseback riding), so I know the benefits of the "compliment sandwich". Yolanda also explains why the horse might not be responding to what the rider is asking, listing a couple possible reasons and then saying what to try adjusting the next go around. I can't wait to continue lessons, despite my sore muscles the day after!

Yolanda is an excellent instructor for beginners and advanced students alike, and knows her horses' capabilities and personalities well. The boarders and other riders are unpretentious and enthusiastic, and the horses are sensible and lovely, and great teachers themselves. It's low-key and friendly here, a wonderful environment whether you're a human or an equine.
