These missions are very difficult and the soldiers, airmen, corpsman, seals, marines, etc go to great lengths to keep their furry friends safe in Afghanistan from the brutality that the animals face. These men and women love these animals and look at them as a buddy that cannot be left behind. Especially as a nonprofit. However, during my experience there I noticed a few things that were a bit off putting to me as someone who loves working with animals and the community that comes with it! Such as being treated as if I were dumb/incapable during the job training, even though there was absolutely no structure going into it, it was unpaid, and I was still learning the ropes, it seemed like it was just inconvenient to them that I was there at all and towards the end of the shift one of the employees even yelled at all of the dogs to "shut up" multiple times as she cleaned. The aggression was certainly alarming. Of course, being autistic I do sometimes get in my own head about these things, but something about it just didn't feel right. Other than that, the animals were sweethearts so I don't regret the time I got to spend with them, it's just the employees were incredibly judgemental and there was no real process/organization behind the scenes for training. The hiring agent wasn't even there! So, I hope this helps anyone looking for some insight from a different perspective. I still can't believe how mean that employee was to the dogs for simply barking, as dogs tend to do.

The staff is so kind and helpful, and you can tell they really care for the animals. The facility is clean and spaced out well so the animals aren't all crammed in together. They have a nice outdoor area, too. If you're considering getting a new fur baby, please adopt! There are so many amazing animals that are looking for their forever home. If you have questions about a cat or dog, they will pull up all the information they have - good, bad, and ugly - to help inform your decision. One staff member shared that their better-behaved animals are the ones that are out in the public at places such as PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus. That makes perfect sense, and the staff at those secondary places can give you even more information as to their behavior. I have had severe anxiety from the experience of losing my dog that I have had to go through extensive therapy to cope with. The rest of the team are wonderful and they have the right intentions.

They are very thorough in making sure the right person, home meets the criteria they are looking for. The adoption process was fast, understandable and easy. Being approved to adopt was a great experience. Going to PetSmart was easy to find and the process there was very organized, with volunteers who had knowledge of the dog I adopted. Her name was Little Bit when I got introduced to her and now she is Lynnie! Spending over 4 hours with her and to bound with each other was beautiful. The moment she saw me and I saw her, I felt a connection that I knew, she was for me. She wagged her tail, barked and I blew her a kiss. Then the volunteer brought her to me and the journey began. They allowed me to take as much time with her as possible. The process of signing agreements was fast and understandable. They are taking care of all her shots, spay, microchipping etc. I would totally recommend, as they recommend to go on the website, look for a dog you're interested in and fill out the application. That way when you are approved, you get an email and a first choice or second choice, depending on how many people were approved and before you. Get there early and stay in line. There was over 40ish people in line when I got there but skipped the line and became person 2, because I was approved. I thought what a waste to throw all of this away. We've passed this shelter many times on our way to Kroger. I always wondered about it. I looked up their location, read their reviews and instructions about donations. In general they have a fantastic reputation and they encourage donations anytime during business hours. My daughter & I packed up three large bags and dropped by. We were greeted by two nice people who expressed their gratitude for dropping off these items. They said it's really needed and they were so glad we thought of them. Our pain is still so over whelming that we were not good company. We sobbed the whole time. They invited us to walk around and visit the pets. They offered to let us hold them and take them out to the play area. Amazing! We stayed and visited. There was a sweet giennie pig, bunny and approximately a dozen dogs, no cats .. It was humbling to see these beautiful animals. This facility is organized, very clean, the animals are well taken care of and the people are passionate. If you're looking to adopt or donate. I highly recommend this shelter.
